. >> insight from fred upton and adam kinzinger. congressman, upton, i have been trying to map out the pathway to 218 or 217, whatever the number is now, given the dynamics of this conference which has draininged dramatically since you got there. do you see a pathway for steve scalise or jinl at this point? >> it's going to be really hard. and adam and i have been chatting for a long, long time and we both expected trump to come out in support of jordan. that was not a surprise. in fact, there is, i think trump is coming up to the hill next week to address the conference, to try to get people together. but it clearly puts jordan in the cat bird seat. at least for the first round. but you've got to get 218. the questions among the moderates, the republican governing council, main street partnership, are there going to be 10 or 15 republicans that say, no, this is not where we need to go. there are 18 republicans that won in districts that biden won. they are not going to be very happy with jim jordan speakership. he owpposed the c.a.

we've heard this from adam kinzinger, et cetera, people have told him, you can't go that way, think of your family. people might kill you. that's the atmosphere in washington on the republican side. where are the republicans who are willing to say, enough, are there any? other than the ones who have left the party? >> the threat is very real and you have a mix of people who behind closed doors are concerned about it but also not interested in living their lives in fear like many of the colleagues they saw when they did step forward, they saw the threats against their families and then you saw members of congress who were moderate republicans, who decided not to run again because they didn't want to deal with what was going to happen to their families and deal with the stress of it. in the context of everything we've been talking about in this conversation, let me be clear about the far right agenda. they claim to be sort of like embracing the republican values and everything but i want to remind people people that are more moderate like me who are trying to figure out how to navigate i

to i want to be adam kinzinger? have my life upended?comfortable from a guy that get a lot of the difference. at the end of the day, with a country to read and a lot of people at home a critic on us. these are the big leagues. it's time to make some big league decisions. >> do they have any concern for the traumatized people in israel who just suffered this terrible attack on october 7th? are still reeling from it and look into the united states for help, including help from the congress? >> republicans on israel and ukraine and taiwan, they talk tough and they act soft. right now, if you are in taiwan, if you are in israel, you should really question whether they're going to have your. back because they vote away from ukraine, they're in opposition to themselves. they cannot govern, they've failed to govern. and so that affects what's happening in israel right now. by the way, lawrence, what just happened in israel after this crisis, they came together with unity coalition governments in response to the crisis. that is the solution here

it continued with the forcing out of liz cheney, after she and congressman adam kinzinger joined the january 6th committee and built into conspiracy pushers like marjorie taylor greene. speaker mccarthy said, quote, i will never leave that woman, talking about greene. the move he made to appease her wing of the party, including the launching of the impeachment inquiry of the current president, after he said he wouldn't without a vote, and flirt being a government shutdown, only empowered republicans who don't mind throwing a monkey wrench into the works, including the one who pushed those same hard liners to shut down the government and push the speaker, he once -- into a corner he could not get out of. the former president, who should be noted, spent today in court on trial for fraud. congressman, are you surprised that most house republicans are not blaming kevin mccarthy for teeing up all this? >> i guess in a way they have to give their, kind of, public view. but i think at their heart, they know. i mean, i think in their heart, they know that he made concessions to the very peop

there have been reports of several members saying privately that they, you know, told adam kinzinger, anthony gonzales, or others who voted for that they didn't vote for second impeachment because they were worried about their security. and anthony gonzales left congress because of his concerns over security. the republican from ohio voted to impeach trump in the second impeachment. so like, there have been real consequences from this domestic, these domestic terror threats, and then there's just the plain old bullying that you see from the maga media, you know? encouraging people to call into these folks. so, i do think that this is having an impact, but so far, it's backfiring a little bit on jim jordan. i think some of that is because of the inter personal thing and they don't have the specter of trump really hanging over this, he endorsed jordan, but he isn't pushing his own people. that might bring a different level of intensity to this, but i agree. -- nobody has 217. so, like they can bully, they can threat, and the reality is there's just no member that has 217, and just one t

i want to go to adam kinzinger, who left the house of representatives because, as made very clear, whene spoke yesterday, because of the kind of cays yos that we're seeing and because of the right part of your conference, who from your perspective, they are determined to continue the chaos. you have been in these meetings and conversations. can you talk about what we're going to see? >> yeah, it's not fun for anybody in there. i was in these meetings where it felt like we were about to go to fist to cuffs, and that was like four years ago before it was as crazy as it was. so there's some intense anger. i guess i i don't understand jim jordan's reason. maybe he needs to go to a second round, maybe a third or fourth, if he's going to lose more people, except they are going to try to bully folks. what is a likely possible scenario here in this goat rodeo, to continue scott jennings' analogies, they give mchenry temporary powers and then jim jordan or somebody continueses to pressure the 20 or 30 until that january 2nd date, until he gets to the point where everybody has been warn down and

a lot of policy positions, but we also agreed on delivering on -- others like liz cheney and adam kinzinger, i have great respect for, because i knew if they -- -- there are republicans who, i think, could be trusted with that responsibility, where we can fight over policy, but at least they could govern. >> which ones? >> you know, i don't want to identify them, it certainly wouldn't help them within their own conference if i did. but, i think there are republicans who could serve the country well. at least they could govern, and that would serve the country well, even if the policies they want to bring about are ones that i think would ultimately not be in our best interest. >> what did you make of what, you mentioned patrick mchenry of north carolina, who has now essentially temporarily filling in. he issued a letter to former speaker pelosi tonight, asked her to vacate her highway office, these offices that are in short supply in the house, as you know. she is not, here she is in california. what did you make of that move, that being his first move, as taking over in this position? >> y

then they come for liz cheney and they come for adam kinzinger, and then eventually, they come to you. anybody who does not completely toe the line of the trump sycophantic maga right. that's where we are now. there will be death threats, there will be intimidation, there will be political threats. there will be calls threatening violence to people's homes, to their offices, if they don't toe the line. and of course, jordan's forces want to now put the pedal to the metal and go forward again tomorrow, thinking this may be the point of maximum fear and intimidation, and they might not be able to recover whatever progress they have been able to make up over the last day. i understand that steve bannon has been exhorting his followers to turn up the heat in people's district offices, in their d.c. offices, and so on. but it's giving more republicans a glimpse of the kind of intimidation and fear tactics that have been unleashed against anybody who stands in the way of donald trump and his preferred followers in congress. >> i'm glad that you invoked january 6th. rachel maddow was on with
