it is an unrealistic vision of old age. one of the great achievements of the american 20th century was reducing poverty among old people. if we don't start wising up and thinking realistically, in terms of the fantasy of what we all like our old age to be, we are going to undo that achievement. the boomers are not going to be richer than the generation before them. i should add something else. as you know, the majority of people over 85 are women, overwhelmingly. women are poorer than men. african-americans and hispanics are poorer than whites, and the gap between rich and poor ways even more heavily on the old ban on young people, because the old don't have the resources and the physical strength to go on making more money and doing things. this is going to be a bigger problem. when you are talking about what government could do, the things we need to be doing right now are thinking about a solution to save for medicare. i don't disagree that the cost of medicare is out of control. one of the terrible things is that presid

moving on to the next age population, ages 6 through 13, kindergarten through eighth grade, a lot of what we heard an hour sessions was focus on out of school time. after-school and summer programs continue to be a priority for this age group. some of the data we gathered city-wide show about 94% of students who would want access to an after-school program, there should be a slot available for them. it does not mean that the family would be satisfied with the allocation, but we feel there is a substantial amount of after school programs. however, community input and input that we are gathering paints a bleak picture. only 52% of students of this age group would have access to a publicly funded program. we are working on the many programs that do not receive public funding to understand the need there more. more need for summer programs, especially those that meet the needs of the day working family. there were types of activities, strong emphasis on academic support as well as a peer relationship building, physical activity, science, math, and reading. we also heard this age group wa

department of aging and adult services. our program is going to be putting computers and technology -- wi technology into centers around the city for seniors. 21 senior centers in the city. six public housing sites for seniors and adults with disabilities. it supported housing sites, eight adult day health care sites. we worked with 24 different nonprofits within the senior community and discussed with them what their clients could be interested in. san francisco seniors only had 20% adoption, and this is an underserved community. a lot of the older people have to deal with isolation. what we are doing, we have nine of the nonprofits -- the recipients are going to be coming in with many volunteers to do extensive training courses at all of these locations. we are working with a lighthouse for the blind and a number of others that will also help us with the assistive technology part, but we are going from the very basics for some people, how to use a mouse, how to get on skype, answer a skype call, so you can see your grandc
