let's start with our own jessica aguirre anchoring our coverage from the rock springs neighborhood. jessica? >> reporter: janelle, that is the question that a lot of residents are asking, why they didn't know sooner what happened. there's been a steady stream of residents coming in and out, carrying whatever they can from their homes. this is the rock springs neighborhood, one of the most severely impacted. this is still one of the areas that's under an evacuation order. let me show you what they're trying to do to fix that. what you're seeing is the city of san jose. in all the flooding, the sewage pump got overflowed. so that has been knocked out. they're now using this orange pump that's a temporary sewage pump. that's what they've been using to try to get rid of all the sewage and mud that's been on the ground here. they are now efforting also to get the other pump, the real pump working. and once that pump is up and working and all the sewage is gone, that's when people can start moving back here in their neighborhood. it is dry here on the ground. but there are parts that are

i'm jessica aguirre. >> and i'm raj mathai. not since 1995 have we seen floods like this.et's show you the root of the problem. sky ranger at the anderson reservoir, it's overflewing into coyote creek. coyote creek stretches 30 miles from morgan hill where you're seeing now through san jose and then into the san francisco bay. along the hardest hit areas, 101 near cochran road in south san jose. all northbound lanes flooded at this hour. closer to downtown san jose, rescuers pulled hundreds of people from their homes as the rising waters fill the streets. this not a rural area. this is right through the bay area's biggest city. the same scenario in a different neighborhood. an apartment complex, evacuated earlier this afternoon. much of this happening right here spartan stadium. >> we have a team of reporters out covering the flooding. we begin with michelle roberts

. >> i'm jessica aguirre. downed trees, power outages and more traffic troubles. wearing it all again. bay area battered once more, knocked down power lines lead to a rough day at school in the south bay. traffic in trouble when the wind tops a tree across a busy freeway in san jose. tonight already saturated lawns are no match for all the powerful gusts. >> a team of reporters are covering this microclimate weather alert. our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. wet and wild tonight. what do you expect for the weekend? >> we will not be in the clear. there's still the possibility of rainfall coming our way. this storm system as we mentioned did do some damage when it came to the wind. we had a top gust of 64 miles per hour. san jose 54, san mateo 35. the storm is beginning to try to move to the south but still kicking up moisture across the bay area. as we get a closer look, winds are beginning to calm down. just 11-mile-per-hour gusts in san jose, 14 in san francisco and 8 for livermore. in terms of rainfall, still widespread with the storm sticking around longer t

i'm jessica aguirre. >> i'm raj mathai. more mudslides, flooding and power outages. we have crews covering many of the hot spots around town. let's begin in studio with jeff ranieri. what are you expecting for the morning commute? >> we expect the worst of the weather to be across the north bay as we head through the 5:00 to 7:00 a.m. time zone. the storm system offshore when the cold front gets here that's when things begin to pickup for us. ahead of the storm system light to moderate rainfall along the northern coast line. but with that storm in sielgt, we now have a flash flood watch issued until 8:00 a.m. on friday. this is where those creeks, rivers and streams will be rising fast. that goes for the north bay, coastal mountains, also for the santa cruz mountains. let's take you to an early look at the time line. 6:30 in the morning mainly near middletown, calistoga, point re as. at 9:00 in the morning san francisco, parts of the peninsula and all of the north bay. we are tracking where the rivers will be rising the most. i'll have another update at 11:19 tonight
