i'm ainsley earhardt. >> part of america's heartland in ruins tonight and many parents without their children. a deadly and devastating tornado slamming into the suburbs of oklahoma city, literally flattening neighborhoods and destroying elementary schools. at this very moment, rescuers are out in that community, especially at plaza towers elementary school, looking frantically for third graders and teachers that are lost, buried under all of that debris. >> now, the confirmed death toll at this hour remains at 51, at least 20 children are among the dead. and many of those children were trapped inside that school when the tornado hit. it was a direct hit. they had a 16-minute warning beforehand. the oklahoma city medical examininger's office says, however, we can expect the number of casualties to keep rising, as the search for more victims continues. president obama has now declared parts of oklahoma disaster sites, meaning that people there will be eligible for federal assistance. >> this is the same tornado that ripped through moore on monday afternoon about 3:00 p.m., when the ki

a 15-year-old avid surfer named shannon ainsley hits the waves off the coast of south africa on the reef the biggest and best in the world. normally all the surfers worry about here is another beach bum stealing a wave. and that's exactly what a tourist is capturing on his video camera. >> what i was filming was two surfers paddling for the same wave. >> but in just seconds, the tourist would record something rarely seen on video -- two great whites in a vicious attack on the young surfer. it all happens in a flash. the first shark rips a massive chunk out of shannon's board and sends him plummeting into the water. the great white gets a piece of his hand as the shark's dorsal fin flops in the surf. the second shark, seen here beneath the waves, swims alongside, perhaps looking for leftovers. shannon's friends see the horror from shore and scramble to save him. he's severely wounded. blood spills from his freshly mangled hand. but within a minute, shannon is safe on the beach. this time he's lucky, but he knows it could have been much worse. >> this great white shark about four meters te

[inaudible] gone. we made it, but, you know, there's people missing still. there's a lot of hurt people out there. >> i heard this -- it didn't sound like a train to me, but, any way, i told my daughter we were in the bath tub covered up with a few ton mattress -- futon mattress, we were praying and god took good care of us. >> a deadly outbreak of twisters, one about a mile wide, whipping through a grand berry texas subdivision actually built by habitat for humanity. at least six people now killed, hundreds more hurt as that twister leveled dozens of houses in that area. at this hour emergency crews continue to look for as many as 14 people who are still unaccounted for this morning. officials say that area looks like a war zone and this morning as that sun is coming up there in texas we will get a better look at all of the damage. >>gretchen: thank you, ainsley. >>steve: where's that storm going? maria molin

ainsley earhardt live with the new details. >> good morning, gretchen.hose passengers say it was the worst night of their lives being woken up to alarms blaring and the back of that ship on fire. take a look at the significant damage to the ship, the grandeur of the seas. the ship was heading to the bahamas when the fire started about 3 a.m. on monday. emergency alarms were going off. more than 2,200 passengers ordered to gather near the lifeboats. some people said at first they thought the boat was sinking before learning of that fire. they waited on the deck for four hours. witnesses say that crews handed out the life vests and oxygen masks. so passengers, they were so fearful, some were fainting, some were physically getting sick they were so terrified. no one injured. the ship never lost power. once the fire was put out the ship was escorted to freeport bahamas for inspection. royal caribbean c.e.o. is flying in to survey the damage himself. the crews obviously canceled. all of the passengers being refunded their money and being flown back to baltimo

ainsley looked into it when she was there. she's now here. what's going on with this?there somewhat of a pattern? >> there seems to be unfortunately a pattern in cleveland with the city police department there. this pwofs a long list of 911 -- there's a long list of 911 operators caught not doing their job. we went to cleveland and did you dug through a lot of the records, one of the worst cases we found, a botched call which ended in a murder. for this cleveland mother, a 911 operator's mistake was the first chapter in her son's horrific death. 25-year-old john moreuscheck abducted. his neighbors saw the crime going down and called for help. >> they hit him with a ball bat and threw him in the truck and left. >> we don't know where they are. if they come back, give us a call. >> all right. >> there should be no reason a dispatcher has to say if they come back. no, that is total [bleep]. that is complete [bleep] >>gretchen: the killers never came back and neither did her son. the dispatcher was put on probation for not sending police. after a half dozen other complaint

we have ainsley earhart. >> yes. amanda berry identified him in her call to police. moved into the neighborhood back in 1992. one year later, he was arrested for domestic violence. but a grand jury dropped those charges. he pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct. castro was a school bus driver just until this past november. neighbors say that he was a loner who always left his house in the dark with the shades blocking the windows and at least one of those windows of his house board up. castro would usually park his motorcycle or pick up truck behind the house. he would lock the gate and enter through the back door as you were saying earlier. no one ever suspected anything, they say, even charles ramsey, the man who you just heard who rescued amanda berry. >> you've been living next door to that house and not known there were any people? >> no, 'cause i'd have pulled this heroic stuff last year. >> do you know him? >> yeah. >> you thought he lived there by himself? >> yes! yes! that's why i'm saying, to hear noises coming next door doesn't make no sense 'cause i know y
