frightening details are emerging from the crash of air france flight 447 two years ago. according to an official french report, there was a failure of the plane's air speed sensors which led to a high-altitude stall. in thr3 minutes 30 seconds, it plummeted to the ocean. throughout that brief time the crew struggled with conflicting speed readings, all 228 people on-board were killed. richard quest has been reviewing the report by france's bureau of investigation and analysis and joins us from london. richard, a frightening scenario that was played out today in terms of this report. >> yes, we now know, drew, what actually happened and the sequence of events and how it played out. i'm going to show you exactly. flight 447 was in the air and moving across. well, it's some particularly coal weather. the tubes at the front of the plane suddenly started to give incorrect readings, they iced up. that led to the disengagement of the auto pilot and auto throttle, and various other systems in the cockpit. what happened then is that the nose started to rise, and the plane's speed

now, 228 people lost their lives when air france flight plummeted into the atlantic ocean. k to june 1st, 2009. three hours into that flight from rio de janeiro to paris, the brazilian air force lost radio contact with air france 447 and a short while later, the airline says the plane had crossed through a, quote, thunderous zone with strong turbulence. if you look at -- fast forward here to april of this year, investigators found hundreds of pieces of the plane, including the torn-off tail wing. the flight data recorder were found in early may but they were record by robot submarines more than 4,000 meters below the surface of the ocean. and on may 5th, just days later, came the discovery of some of the passengers' bodies, still trapped in their seats. two were brute to the surface, as we said before judges in paris say the rest should be left undisturbed at the bottom of the atlantic. so with retrieval of all the information on those flight data recorders, a preliminary analysis could not be weeks away. we spoke with an aviation expert about the french investigation. an at

sources say the aircraft's flight recorders reveal air france stalled. the airbus a-330 crashed en route from rio to paris, killing all on board. jim bittermann joins me from paris with more. does this make it any clearer who was to blame? >> sequence of events seems to be about the same what we heard shortly after the crash but there was the question if the senior pilot was in the cockpit when the trouble started into the flight. basically, that's pretty much standard procedure. there's three pilots on these long distance flights and senior pilot takes the plane off and lands it. in between times takes a rest break to be ready for the landing. in any case, it was not necessarily unusual he was out of the cockpit, but according to the reports that are coming in, basically he was outside the cockpit and then rushed in and tried to take charge. there was a great deal of confusion in the cockpit about exactly what was going on. but it should be taken with some caution because the fact is that there's a lot at stake in terms of lawsuits and all other things.
