the airbus flight that went down on may 31st, was an a-330. investigators have still not determined what caused that accident, but automatic messages sent before the crash indicated there were inconsistent speed measurements. that has focused attention on external speed sensors called peto tubes. in june, investigators turned up two other speed sensor incidents with a 330s and now the associated press is reporting that a review of data has turned up at least a dozen other occasions where speed sensors malfunctioned, all of them northwest a 330 flights. delta would not confirm the incident but says it is in the process of replacing all peto tubes on its fleet. exactly what kind of remediation is being worked out in concert with european authorities with the goal of making all 625 airbus a330s in service around the globe safe. could that call for the grounding of a330s, it would be extremely unusual for authorities to do that since the speed sensors have not been proven a factor in one crash, but the air worthiness directive will give clues as t
