and supported participants in the coordinating council for reentry in alameda county. i would say it is an unlikely ally, and i'm sure that we are lucky in his leadership and support. but i do think it is because they are starting to see the connection between services and opportunities for people after incarceration. and the outcomes, which are positive. in the same vein, my office, we have funding to provide legal services for people with criminal records. unfortunately, the san francisco public defender is unique in this state. there are a few other models, but it is unfortunately not in every county, but there is a clean slate project, and that is not a foregone conclusion. the other thing is i and my bad attitude, i probably lost over the good laws that do exist. one challenge where i hope we see a lot of movement is dismantling the structural barriers people have and space from accessing what laws do exist, so that would be another one. from the very least, providing these legal services around the state. also, just a simple "know your rights" campaign. there are

it happened at crown beach in alameda where allen is live no now. police say they can't do rescue because they are not certified to do them; is that right. >> that is true. we get into that to a second. first let me tell you for more than an hour the crowd out here watched a suicide man stand in the surf up to his neck here off crown beach in alameda. now about 75 beach goers couldn't understand why alameda police officers and firefighters stood idle by and watched the man slowly succumb to the 60 degree water and go under. he was 150 yards out but it was still too shallow for a coast guard boat and who want are open another call. it arrived too late. alameda fire department says budget constraints are preventing it from recertifying the firefighters in land base water rescue. without it the city would be open to liability. >> if you saw a child drowning more than 75 feet offshore would you go in and rescue that child or not? >> if i was off duty know what i would do. i think you are asking me my on duty response and i would have to stay within our

amy hollyfield is live in alameda. one of the districts protesting education cuts statewide. >> reporter: day three. they are going to kick off in alameda and they are going to start leaf letting. yesterday for part of the state of emergency protest. temperatures across the state made their point in shopping malls. they held what they called grade-ins show how much work they take home. they have been protesting at the capitol all week. cuts for school funding and asking legislators to extend two-year-old temporary taxes so there won't be more cuts which they say could be devastating. >> it's over 220 students a day a teacher will be seeing. you can imagine what that will do for the students. >> reporter: as they are protesting school boards are cutting. san francisco and mount diablo both met last night and voted to issue pink slips. more than 180 teachers will be getting them and 139 teachers in san francisco. districts say they hope to be able to rescind them but they have to plan for the possibility that the state w

mass transit, there is again for the second straight day no alameda harbor bay ferry service. yesterday, all the strong winds actually damaged a portion of the dock there heading towards the boat. so again for the second straight day they have had to cancel that ferry service. everything else though on time including bart running 20 trains on time. muni metro, caltrain, everything else looks good. right now we are mostly dealing with roadwork overnight. northbound 880 from fifth towards grand various lanes blocked until about 5:00, possibly 5:30 this morning. not causing much of a delay though. our sensors are mostly picking up top speeds between hayward up into oakland and once again we're talking about this roadwork. it's been going on for several weeks. eastbound 4 at loveridge, detours there. that should be wrapping up by about 5:30, as well. again, not seeing any big delays in the westbound highway 4 commute direction. and we have been getting a couple calls about possibly some sort of incident on the golden gate bridge. you can see some of our sensors are showing a littl

the news this year is that the alameda peace officer's memorial will soon expand. donors have raised money for two new granite walls so that the names of all police officers and firefighters who have died in the line of duty since alameda county was formed 140 years ago can now be included at that memorial. >> it is wonderful that we can get together and come to honor our loved ones with people. it has been 12 years for us, for the families, not like it just happened. but it is nice to know we're not forgotten. >> collapsed police officer james williams was killed in january of 1999. >>> the coast guard suspended their search for a woman who jumped over board from a cruise ship. now there is video of the woman climbing over the railing and letting go. what you see here is a photo of the ship. the coast guard officers looked through the waters off san diego and northern mexico today. this video here is from early this morning as they prepared their helicopters. the 65-year-old woman was reported missing when she failed to show up for a customs check yesterday. >>> a

oakland, alameda, harbor, at gate d. in undertaking the second phase of improvements, we are looking at the build out of potential. facilities at the ferry building area. that would include a new gate a, a new gate f, and a new gate g. one of the things that is shown in this map in darfur orange is areas that have to be reconstructed or filled. in the blue collars, arafat will be demolished. we are also reviewing this with bcdc staff and have undertaken steps to minimize the film, from a cost-effective point of view, but also from a responsible point of view. in the future, we are looking at, in the north basin, berkeley and richmond, which could trigger when gate e is constructed. we are looking at converting gate e, the one that held oakland, to its more treasure island service because of its direct route. we will have more space for the amlarger amount of queuing. and to move in alameda and oakland to gate f. g will serve as spare birth and for other things to come along at a later time, particularly in the south bay.
