(tiffany) alameda county's district attorney says, the treatment of inmates by four sheriff's deputies is not only cruel, but shows a disregard for inmates' humanity. the deputies now face felony assault charges .... and had their first court appearance yesterday. kron 4's dan kerman was there. alameda county's district attorney says a pattern of abuse and misconduct by 4 deputies at the santa rita jail is sadistic, cruel and shows a disregard for humanity of the inmates.those 4 deputies made their first court appearance tuesday at the dublin courthouse deputies justin linn and erik mcdermott face multiple felony assault charges. court documents suggest an inmate at the santa rita jail alerted staff to the alleged abuse in november of 2016.. suggesting deputies linn and mcdermott facilitated and allowed inmates to throw feces and urine onto other inmates. there is also an allegation that mcdermott strangled an inmate until he lost consciousness. the two are also charged with conspirin

the city of alameda says the problem affects people who live and work in alameda point. that is the neighborhood at the western end of the island where the naval air station used to be. the city is handing out bottled water to people who live in the area, but it is warning them not to drink, cook, brush their teeth, bays or shower that take a bath or shower in the water that comes out of the pipe. the city owns the water system, but it is operated by east bay. there have been reports that it taste different than usual, and that is when the district tested it. >> we are flushing the water out of the system, which is improving things. we decided to essentially have everyone stop using the water until we can find the problem. >> officials say the mineral content in the water at alameda point is different than anywhere else in the east bay system. the issue is only in that area because of the infrastructure at the naval air station. they hope to identify the actual problem sometime today. until then, again, people affected can pick up bottled water at city hall west or the a
