they came, they took nells along with these other folks to alcatraz. a little prison a mile north of the hanoi hilton, 13 cells, and i'm not sure why they left two empty. probably forgot to include a couple of these guys in there. and they lived -- these 11 guys lived for two years in nine-by-four foot cells. so think about this. this is your world for 23 hours and 15 minutes a day. so nine feet is about that. this is about four feet. this is where those guys lived for two years. there were no windows. they would walk in this space. if they had enough energy -- they didn't get much food so they couldn't do pushups. or they were so injured this -- they couldn't do that. this was their world. all they had. they couldn't see out of it. it was cold in the winter. and it was like a furnace in the summertime. and they had nothing to do. so when i was writing the book i thought the worst part about being a p.o.w. might be the torture. when i told him i was writing the book, commander george coker said, why? it was boring? i thought he didn't know what he was

jerry denton and 10 other american pows were known as the alcatraz 11. these pows were so effective as leaders and so frankly obnoxious that the north vietnamese kick them out of the hanoi hilton. if you can imagine how disruptive you have to be to be detention.of a pow they were among the highest-ranking officers. so the first plane out of hanoi on february 12, 1973, jerry denton happened to be the highest-ranking officer. the plane landed at clarke airbase and he walked out and stepped onto, you know, free soil for the first time in almost seven and a half years and gave these beautiful three sentences that were the first words americans heard from pows. wasuncer: jeremiah denton promoted to add million 1980. how long did he serve in alabama and how was he as a legislator? a lotta powswhen returned home, they found that america had changed somewhat. they had been behind ours in a foreign country for seven or eight years. jerry denton had felt that may be the moral compass of the country had shifted a bit and he felt it was important to be a public serv

looks like we're looking at angel island and alcatraz. visibility is limited due to clouds and fog.e have have the friday forecast featuring thunderstorms coming up in about 4 minutes. >>> the oakland police department's troubled radio system failed again. it has a rocky history at times leaving officers unable to communicate during emergencies. then during the radio glitch, opd's computer-aided dispatch system went out for three hours. officers and firefighters used the database for addresses, phone numbers and information to respond to calls. during the outage, dispatchers had to write down incidents on paper. as far as the radios, opd says it went to a backup countywide system and everything was working within 40 minutes. one councilmember says that's not good enough. >> for me to hear that our radios are off and on sometimes is really -- it sets back public safety and holds back our police officers if they have no confidence in the previous radio system. >> the city council approved joining the countywide radio system in 2014. but the full transition has not yet been made. >>> e
