with me is chicago alderman joe moreno. joe, thanks for joining us. let's get right to it.f i were a parent in chicago today, when you get the message you have to make another plan for your child today, if you're working a parent what are you supposed to do? >> absolutely. i agree, melissa. thanks for having me. we do have a contingency plan we're having schools and parks open for kids to come to but let's cut to the chase as you said. this strike is a shame they're on strike. they should not be. they should be in the, teachers, we have fantastic teachers. i support the teachers. but the union by calling this strike made a severe mistake. our kids are not being taught. our parents are having to find other coverage for them. it is a shame. it should have never happened. they're very close on a couple small issues. melissa: alderman, i have a couple problems with what you said already. you say the teachers are doing a great job. alarms me here anyone is asking for pay raise when you look at facts, 15% of the fourth graders are proficient in reading. >> 15%? >> right. melissa:

now the man who led this fight in chicago is alderman joe moreno, and he joins us now.t to be here. >> cenk: first of all how sure are we that chick-fil-a means what they say when they say they've done an internal memo saying they won't discriminate any more and won't give to these groups that fight against gay rights? >> so, i've been fighting this for ten months way before the fanfare, trying to negotiate with the company and to have an anti-discriminatory policy that does not exist. i had trouble with their funding, and that's why i was not supportive of their store. they gave me a letter that you quoted, and that was a good step, but i recently reviewed their 990 statement which is a statement that shows all of their givings that they must submit publicly, and an as of to this date they have not given a dollar to those groups. that coupled with the statement they distributed to all of their franchises and corporate employees entitled "chick-fil-a "chick-fil-a:schuster who wechick-fil-a: who we are." it states very clearly they will not discriminate against a variety

this started when chicago city alderman joe moreno who was fighting a second chick-fil-a being builtthe city. his office told me today, he's seen proof chick-fil-a has not funded any such groups this year. there's nothing in here about funding anti-gay marriage initiatives, only that it funds programs. what's not clear is whether this represents a change. it treats everyone with dignity and respect regardless of sexual orientation. it also said this summer after dan kafi said marriage should be the biblical definition. supporters lined up. that was followed by a smaller kiss-in by gay couples later. then came hate vandalism in l.a. on their facebook page. some accuse the company of caving and putting the bottom line before principle. it's not clear it's changed its funding patterns. it does say it supports marriage in here, but doesn't say exactly what marriage consists of. and the company says, it wants to stay out of the political debate on the matter now. back to you. >> i would guess so. the story got us thinking, should corporations ever take a side on heated and sensitive issue
