>> reporter: good afternoon, alex. basically just nibble around the edges of this jobs report. yesterday we had governor romney pointing out that workforce participation has gone down, saying that fewer people are even looking for work. that's part of why the report has changed. also his advisers reporting that last night that a significant portion of this gain in the or decline in the unemployment rate has to do with folks who are taking part-time jobs. these aren't new career, the big kind of robust job creation the romney campaign says is necessary. their strategy has been to sort of kick things back towards the debate, focus on a point governor romney made during the debate to say that president obama doesn't really have a plan to encourage broad-based job creation. this is governor romney last night here in florida. >> he got a chance to explain his jobs program, how he's going to create new jobs in america. did you hear what he had to say? i didn't, either. . i kept looking for a specific plan as to what he was g

hello, maria. >> alex, good morning. we have a major storm system beginning to wrap up in through the central plains. you can see with the clouds and the showers and thunderstorms already beginning to develop. this is the area that will likely see severe weather throughout the day. and unfortunately it does mean the potential for a few tornadoes as this area of low pressure develops it's going to drag through a cold front and it's right in that area between the cold front and the warm front, western missouri into oklahoma into texas, that we have the highest risk for those strong thunderstorms. the gusty winds, heavy rain and isolated tornadoes. notice on the northern side, too, from madison to minneapolis it's warm enough for rain. we could see a few thunderstorms there as well. it's just not going to be a cold system. as it continues to push off to the east notice that area in yellow. that's the area highlighted for the potential risk of stronger thunderstorms tomorrow. so from the ohio valley, including cincinnati, do

>> right, alex. statistics came out with reports saying unemployment fell in all but two of the swing states. let's go through some of these numbers. new hampshire and virginia came in at 5.7% and 5.9%. those were unchanged. but ohio, wisconsin, colorado and florida were all down. and ohio came down -- was at 7%. it was down .2%. unemployment also fell in wisconsin, colorado and florida, as i said. and then also nevada, michigan and north carolina all came down as well. nevada was at 11.8%. north carolina was at 9.6%. and michigan at 9.3%. and i also wanted to add, alex, that economists were telling me that i was talking to that nevada was actually the worst economy for all the swing states mostly because of the foreclosures. >> absolutely. and in fact, speaking of housing sales of previously-owned homes decreased in september from the highest left in two years. is a decrease in sales, though, necessarily bad? >> no, alex, not at all. i'm going to go through some of those numbers as well. speaking of

>> good afternoon, alex.they have to make adjustments after the first debate. a lot of folks said the president delivered a lackluster performance. so these are going to focus on president obama working to sharpen his performance. to deliver crisp, short answers to mitt romney's criticisms of his policies, and really to defend his own policies. here's here in virginia at a resort sparring with senator john kerry in a number of advisers looking on. counseling by reporters at the resort that the advisers have been seen carrying thick binders. so obviously debate preparations have already gotten under way today. one thing really interesting to note alex. during the president's first debate preparations that took place in nevada, president obama held a large rally with supporters. that's not the case this time around. there's nothing on the president's public schedule. we may see him make a short trip to a local restaurant or that type of thing. here's he's just focusing on this upcoming debate on tuesday night.

joining me tonight is msnbc political analyst richard wolffe and host of "now with alex wagner", alex wagner. congratulations on your show. it's really taken off. >> thank you, ed. >> there's damage here. i mean, the polls show it. you can almost feel it. richard, how does he reverse the damage tomorrow night? >> if he's smart, he tries to see the debate as a chance to reintroduce himself to the american people. he blew that opportunity in the conventions, but this isn't a moment for zingers. this is not a moment about landing the punch. no matter how badly you think you want it, you have to take a much more measured approach that this is a conversation, this is a case where he hasn't communicated who he is and what he stands for. the problem is in the context of the 47% where that's been the explaining narrative for everything you don't like about mitt romney, he has to get beyond that and say this is who i really am. he's not just saying who he is, but he's saying the guy i think i am, i'm not that guy. it's hard to do in a two-minute response. >> alex, how aggressive do you think p
