we're live this morning in clearlake, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. county, the father of 8-year-old leila fowler is standing by his 12- year-old son after the son was arrested in connection with his sister's stabbing death. the boy was arrested saturday, two weeks after leila was killed at her home in calaveras county. the boy told investigators an intruder stabbed leila. their father is telling "the associated press." he will believe his son is innocent until he is proven otherwise. the 12-year-old boy may have been in trouble before. according to cnn, the boy was suspended from his middle school this year after being accused of bringing a small pocketknife on the school campus. that report says the boy was suspended for five days because of the incident. >>> 8:02. in overnight news, fire destroyed a salon and car shopping business in san jose. the building they shared on sharon drive caught fire six hours ago. and firefighters dumped so much water on the fire, the roof caved in. janine de la vega is there live to show us the damage inside. good mor

alex savidge joins us live to tell us where searchers are focusing. >> reporter: good afternoon. i just got finished talking with some of mikaela's family members. they remain optimistic that this little girl can be found alive. today, here in clearlake, the search certainly intense fined to find this -- intensified to find this 9-year-old girl. a chopper was launched to search from the air. while sheriff's deputies used boats to check the docks along clearlake, meantime, there were dozens of searchers who went door to door, all of them looking for any sign of 9-year- old mikaela lynch, missing since sunday. her godfather tells me the family is trying to remain positive. >> obviously, this is a very difficult time for the family, for the parents, especially. we're ecertainly grateful for volunteers and law enforcement and the people who have come out, the community. the family remains hopeful at this time. >> reporter: mikaela is autistic, unable to speak. she atends this san francisco elementary school. they were staying at the vacation home in clearlake when the girl wandered o

alex savidge has more. >> authorities believe there could still be some missing.mergency workers won't stop searching through the rubble until everyone has been accounted for. using jack hammers to break through piles of concrete, searchers trying to find people trapped. an urban search-and-rescue teams were out this morning with dogs. meanwhile, survivors are telling their story. this couple took shelter inside a tunnel under the highway as the tornado moved through. >> oh, my god. i was praying to god so many times. i was i like -- i was like i'm not gonna see tomorrow. i don't want to die today but there's nothing i can do. >> reporter: with winds clocked at 200 miles an hour, the tornado slammed into two schools, including plaza towers elementary where students and staff took cover as the storm hit. >> the tornado went in and out. i was hanging onto one of the desks and i fell back and all of the dirt starts getting in my eyes and on my clothes. >> reporter: at another elementary school, there were tearful reunions in the parking lot as parents rushed to find

ktvu's alex savidge is live in calaveras county, where the close-knit community is reacting to this news. >> reporter: this community is stunned by the arrest of leila fowler's brother. the 12-grade boy is a student here at toyon middle school. the superintendent says this school will have grief counselors available for students as they return to class later this morning. this boy was arrested saturday for the stabbing death of his sister. he attended the vigil for his sister. her brother was the only one home at the time. he initially told investigators that he saw an intruder running from the family's house and then found his sister dead. that prompted a massive search for leila's killer. police were on the alert. it's unclear what led authorities to arrest the brother. but the superintendent in calaveras county tells me leila's death is painful for students and staff and her brother's arrest now makes things more difficult. >> this is a whole different arena in terms of what i've had to deal with. i'm confident in our staff. we'll band together and to what's best for the kids and 0 ea

alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. >>> also in overnight news the chp is investigating a deadly crash in the remote area of west marin county. that happened early this morning on point rays petaluma road. that is just outside of petaluma. investigators say the driver of that pickup truck drove off the road and crashed into the tree. the truck then burst into flames. the driver was pronounced dead at the scene but it's not clear what lead up toth accident. >>> time now 6:07. tornadoes and storms in the midwest left at least one person dead, 21 hurt and a lot of damage. this is in wichita, kansas. that tornado caught on video as it touched down. it damaged homes near the airport. more than two dozen tornadoes hit parts of illinois, opened, and iowa. a mobile home park in oklahoma had some of the worst damage. look at this. the body of a 79-year-old man was found in that rubble there. most of the homes and the buildings in the community are destroyed. a helicopter pilot describes what he saw. >> everything was just gone. you see like beds in the yard. you took the house and put it in a g

alex savidge is joining us live now.at chp headquarters with the first public comments from that limo driver. >> reporter: good morning. the driver one of five people who survived that fire over the weekend. and he says that he wishes he could have done more to help the five women who became trapped inside that burning limo. this was a group that was heading out for a wedding celebration. a bride and her four friends were killed in the fire that raced through their limo. this is cell phone video from the san mateo bridge. the limo driver orval brown told the san francisco chronicle that someone said there was smoke in the back. by the time the limo stopped on the bridge flames were filling the compartment. four women escaped the fire by climbing through the front partition but five others were trapped. the coroner told ktvu which all five women who died in this fire were found huddled near the front partition. one of the women who killed in the fire had recently been married and the group was heading out to celebrate. th

live in san jose, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. . >>> a search for a man with a gun in san jose has ended, thanks to an alert business owner. this is new video into our newsroom of police taking a man into custody after searching a neighborhood on berryessa road for hours. police were looking for a man accused of pointing a gun at a security guard at a cafe, then leading them on a chase. the man got away and police called off the search. then they got a call from the owner of a doughnut shop about someone banging on his windows. >> he said, give me the money. no, no, get out. get out. >> the man at the doughnut shop was checked out by paramedics and is now being questioned by police. >>> a san jose neighborhood was put on edge by a fire at a homeless encampment. it happened at 4:00 yesterday afternoon near an apartment complex on north king road. firefighters are looking into what caused the fire. >>> the investigation of a violent attack that happened just hours ago. ktvu's tara moriarty is there at the scene. so what do you know a

ktvu channel 2 reporter alex savidge is live in berkeley with an explanation behind the new parking trialex. >> reporter: good morning. the goal here is to try to make it easier to find a place to park here in berkeley by freeing up more spaces. that's why the city is launching this three-year pilot program. it will happen in several business neighborhoods in this area. the goal is to improve the, aing situation -- the parking situation. you could be shelling out more money to park in areas like where we are. the city is testing several different pricing plans. one idea, to designate business districts as premium areas. there could be higher prices to park there and shorter time limits. another idea, a progressive rate, parking rate would go up with each hour you stay park. the city is looking at where parking rates are higher between noon and 6:00 p.m. a lot of these proposals are not sitting well with at least one business owner i talked with this morning. he's worried the higher prices to park will drive aways customers. >> i think they are gonna kill the businesses down there. people

and ktvu alex savidge joins us now from outside the home that was on fire. alex. >> reporter: good morning. this was a huge fire that caused heavy damage to a very large home here in kentfield. this place i'm told is 3500 square feet. you can also see that the garage was heavily damaged as well. two cars including that old mustang both of them burned up here. firefighters remain here on the scene. right now they are going through this place and checking for hot spots. the good news this morning no one was hurt. a battalion chief spoke to me and told me an elderly woman was at home along with her adult son and his wife. flames began shooting from his home on the 100 block of good hill road. it was just about 2:00 this morning. and this fire quickly grew to a three alarm fire. resources had to be called in from several neighboring departments here in marin county. the kentfield fire department battalion chief told me this fire broke out right outside of the house and thank fly someone noticed. >> you know it's a fluke. the owner's daughter-in-law woke up and sa

ktvu's alex savidge is live outside an oakland care center where those victims worked. alex? >> reporter: and according to an employee here at the fruitvale health care center, all nine women riding in the limo on saturday night were current or former nurses here at this nursing home in oakland. you can see as we push into the front door, that inside flowers have been left behind for all of those women either killed or injured in that fire saturday night. later this morning,ing, the -- morning, the coroner is expected to identify the women who died. we've learned the name of three of them. 31-year-old nerizo fojas. also shilled 35-year-old michelle estrera and -- killed 35-year-old michelle estrera and jenny balon. balon was a wife and mother of two who lived in dublin. we talked last night with her husband. he told us the two were married for 14 years and he says he feels lost without his wife. >> loving, friendly and very understanding, very caring, sweet person. >> reporter: balon's husband said he was told by one of the survivors that all of the women tried to escape from

reporting live from -- five with -- alex savidge joins us now from chp headquarters with the first public comments from the limo driver. alex. >> reporter: good morning. the major question this morning is exactly what sparked that deadly fire over the weekend. we may get a better sense because the chp will be updating their investigation later this morning here at the redwood city office. but at this point we are also hearing from the limo driver. the one who was driving that limo. he is describing a fast moving fire. this man says by the time he pulled the car over on the san mateo bridge over the weekend flames and smoke were filling the passenger compartment. this is cell phone video of that fire. the limo driver told the san francisco chronicle someone in the back of the limo told them there was smoke in the passenger compartment. he stopped the car on the bridge. brown told the chronical that all four of the surviving women who were in the back escaped through the limo's front partition but the san mateo county coroner told ktvu the five women who died in this fire were found huddled

alex savidge is live with the call for help from family and friends of that missing man. alex. >> reporter: and good morning. a short time ago i spoke with bo rasmussen's father. he said he is moved by the outpouring of support from this entire community that the family is seeing and will see it later today. they're expecting as many as 200 people will take part in this search. that means friends, relatives, coworkers, all taking part. this is where that search will be coordinated from. this is the gym. bedford hall at st. grab reel church in san francisco. everyone will be meeting here two hours from now. obviously they are already getting set up here. they will continue to search for rasmussen, who disappeared after last weekend's beta breakers race. the family has set up a facebook page trying to help find him and today searchers will be heading out to golden gate park and the surrounding neighborhoods and also near ocean beach where rasmussen's clothing was found near the water. some believe he may have gone swimming in the ocean. the 27-year-old was last seen on sunda

ktvu's alex savidge, live this morning in marin county to discuss this early start to the bay area firen. alex? >> reporter: good morning to you. we're already seeing the winds pick up where we are this morning. we're close to mount tam, actually at the throckmorton ridge fire department, where they are geared up today with the red flag warning there effect right now. they are expecting strong gusts, low humidity and low temps through the day. 40 mile-per-hour wind gusts up here when you get elevation, so obviously that's a big concern. newspaper this area, you have a lot of homes that are close to the wildland areas. we bring in the fire captain, what's the concerns today. >> the concern today is rapid fire spread, driven by the weather. the wind, low humidities, and just the potential to grow largely as it did yesterday in san jose. >> we're looking up right now. we've already got winds here, as you see the flag up there, already moving. you're only expecting it's going to get worse? >> yeah, as the day goes on, i believe they predicted midafternoon is when the winds will be at their

this morning we are learning their identity, alex savidge joins us live from where the fire happenedfoster city side of the san mateo bridge. >> reporter: good morning, the chp says this limo was not involved in an accident it just for whatever reason burst into flames coming west across the san mateo bridge last night. the fire just raced right through the passenger compartment in that limo, killing 5 women riding in the limo. chp trying to figure out what sparked this fire. witnesses driving bye snapped these photos of the flame shooting from the back of the limo, investigators say there were 10 people inside, the driver and nine passengers, the driver noticed smoke so he pulled over and stopped the limo on the limb. he was able to get out, but 5 women riding in the back could not and died in the fire, 4 other passengers survived as well. the name of the company is not being released as investigators have a lot of questions after this deadly fire. >> at this point we don't know. we don't know how the fire got started, therefore we don't know what type of -- what type of crime if an

alex savidge is live with more reaction to this. >> reporter: one tech analyst i talked to here in sanrancisco told me today the goal of this deal is to try to make yahoo!cool again. it's a play for younger users. marissa mayer announced this $is .5 billion deal to -- $1.5 billion deal to buy tumblr. most of the visitors are in their teens and 20s. the company will be operated independently. it won't be moving west. tumblr's headquarters will remain in new york. they are trying to breathe new life into this. a cnn analyst states there's a lot riding on this deal from mayer who came over from google a little less than a year ago. >> this is an acquisition to acquire user. that's a big bet, i mean, to spend over a billion dollars for a new ceo at a brand of yahoo!that's been around forever but struggling will rewrite her la legacy. >> reporter: this roof could change the fact that there's not many ads seen. they will work with tumblr to create ads that are tasteful and seamless. but the cnn analyst says this could backfire for yahoo!if ads are forced onto tumblr. mayer says she expects t

ktvu's alex savidge joins us live now at an auto shop in south san francisco with what one expert says could have been the cause. good afternoon, alex. >> reporter: well, good afternoon. i talked with the owner here today of royal auto in south san francisco. he services thousands of limousines in the bay area, including lincoln town cars similar to the one that caught fire over the weekend. he believes in all likelihood, it was the air suspension system on that car that probably failed, causing the bottom of the car, the underside of the car to scrape the ground, ultimately leading to this deadly fire. >> you see that right there? >> reporter: yes. >> this was about to blow up. >> reporter: today, the shop owner showed us the air ride balloons that are part of the suspension system for the lincoln town cars. over time, he says those balloons can develop cracks and actually explode, causing the car to bottom out. the owner says if that happens at high speeds, the fuel tank can be compromised and there can be sparks. >> whatever it was, it was a fuel issue. the only way for -- even if t

there are no reports though fortunately of any injuries at this point ktvu alex savidge is on the scene right now and he's going to have a live report in our next half hour. >>> we also have new information about the woman arrested on suspicion of arson in martinez. this is our first look at the suspect. 48-year-old julie of concord. police say she was seen using a lighter to ignite dry grass. she was allegedly high on drugs and fought with officers injuries one of them. here's the damage police say she caused. the flames threatened homes in pleasant hill. wind pushed the fire across steep slopes and dry grass. firefighters actually called for a ten engine response. the helicopter dropped watt and a plane dropped fire retar dent. >> it's terrifying. >> the 90 minute fire held the fire to 15 acres. police say the officer hurt during the struggling suffered injuries to his leg and was take ton the hospital but will be okay. tenpenny was arrested for being under the influence and arson. in the chaos of the fire as neighbors were hosing the areas around their property, a herd of goats had t

alex savidge is live with more on how this fire may have started. alex?er: well, investigators this morning are looking into whether hot coals from an unattended barbecue may have sparked this fire. it did quite a bit of damage to this large home. it's a 3500-square foot place here in kentfield. as you can see, a good portion of the roof collapsed during this firefight. the good news, no one was hurt when this fire broke out at about 2:00 this morning. this home on the 100 block. crews say a 91-year-old woman was home at the time along with her adult son and the son's wife. everybody managed to escape unhurt after they noticed the fire. the next door neighbor i talked to said he got a knock on the door early this morning. >> the woman from next door says our house is on fire. call 911, which is what i did, and came out and saw a wall of flames about 15, 20 feet high. >> reporter: this fire quickly grew in size. that's part of the reason, the kentfield fire department called in resources from a number of neighboring marin county agencies. a good portion of

ktvu's alex savidge is at the start line where all the action began and security was tight there thiseporter: yeah, was. seriously, security obviously one of the serious issues for the san francisco police department, but obviously a very fun event. you know, you might look at it kind of like a mobile halloween party. this is what we have here, this is the start line of the bay to breakers and right now you can see these are sort of the stragglers. i don't mean that in a disparaging way but these are the folks that are taking it slow and, you know, they are taking the race slow, folks are still leaving the start line here, they are still coming. i don't know where all these runners are coming from but they are still coming from somewhere and they still want to take part in the bay to breakers. a beautiful day for a race. a lot of folks walk part of the race route, stop, chitchat, have a good time, socialize, that's part of the fun of the bay to breakers but on a more serious note, san francisco police, they really are out in force today. i talked with the chief early on this morning.
