ktvu alex savidge is live in san rafael right now. know they are getting ready for possible flooding. >> reporter: they are. they are gearing up for a huge downpour. here at the downtown san rafael fire station the sand is ready to go. they have sandbags available for people. if anyone has concerns for flooding near where their live. a huge amount of rain will move in later on today. the storm that hit the bay area yesterday is just a preview of what is to come. most areas picked up less than an inch of rain yesterday but the rain returns later today and continues throughout the weekend and you can expect some big numbers here. the forecast is calling for several inches of rain to fall in most areas. that is a lot rain obviously compared to yesterday's storm. there are some areas that will get more rain just in a couple days than they did during all of last year. now down in the south bay preparations are being made to avoid flooding with this storm. the santa clara valley water district is working to clear debris from waterways to ma

alex savidge is live now with some of the continuing questions surrounding the investigation. od morning -- well, good morning to you. oakland police still have not said who these potential kidnapping victims may be. so far no one has come forward to report the pair missing. still, authorities are working this as a legitimate stranger abduction. that's why this morning as you head off to work, you will probably notice the caltrans freeway signs are all lit up with information about this amber alert and a description of the car. late last night, oakland police released this new surveillance video of the man believed to be at the center of this kidnapping case. it was taken inside the safeway store on redwood road near highway 13. police say this man was shoplifting and as armed with a knife. witnesses say he ran from the store and jumped into a parked car with an elderly man and a teenaged girl still inside of it. that car then sped out of the parking lot. witnesses told police it was clear the man and the girl were in trouble. >> we also have information reported to us by witne

alex savidge joins us live from woodside where a big tree has come crashing down. alex, when do you think the tree will be picked up? >> reporter: we're on highway 84 in the woodside area of san mateo county. you can see this roadway blocked in both directions because of this large tree that came crashing down early this morning. it took down power lines in the process here. this is one of several trees that apparently fell overnight in this vicinity up in the hillsides of san mateo county according to the sheriff's department. in fact, just about 15 minutes ago, let me show you some video, we heard what sounded like another tree fall in this area. you can see the power lines here moving after that happened. a pg&e worker was out here at the time. he heard the sale ing this. he told -- he heard the same thing and said he was gonna check it out. this is on skyline. about a quarter mile from alice's restaurant. the sheriff's department got the call about this around 3:30. because of several days of drenching rain, the ground up here in the hills is saturated. and tha

ktvu's alex savidge is live at the house to tell us about it and also show us the damage. morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, dave. it's incredible to see this up close. now that the sun is coming up, you can get a better view. this family is lucky they were not hurt. let me show you where the large branch fell off the tree. it fell this direction and fell on the family's house, thankfully, it fell on the carport, not near where everyone was sleeping. that branch damaged part of the home. it also damaged two cars parked in the driveway. this all happened before 3:00 at this house that's right at the intersection of 7th avenue and san bruno avenue. three people were inside at the time. a young man, his mother, and his stepfather. all of them were sleeping when they were suddenly woken up by a loud crashing sound, and at first they all thought it was an earthquake. >> we heard a big shake. we thought that a car crashed into the house. no, when we came out here, we saw that the tree had come down. we saw that not only just hit the garage. but we saw that it hit the car

we're live this afternoon in downtown oakland, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you, alex. >>> san jose police arrested a man this morning identified by witnesses as the suspect in a fatal stabbing. police say the incident began with an argument inside the johnny vi's bar on east santa clara street before 1:30. they say the men took their dispute outside. that's when one of the men got stabbed. there were many witnesses and some pointed him out to officers who took him into custody. >> there may have been alcohol involved. we don't know the relationship between the parties. >> reporter: gang-related? >> it does not appear to be. >> reporter: there's no word yet on whether the two men knew each other or what the argument was about. police have not released any names but they say the men appear to be in their 20s. >>> san francisco police have arrested a driver for hitting and killing a pedestrian this morning in what is now the fourth pedestrian fatality in the city this year. it happened on van ness avenue and pacific around 1:00 this morning. the force of

ktvu's alex savidge just talked with fire officials. you are back now. ng one blaze may not be connected to the other four. alex? >> reporter: well, yes. it does seem like the oakland fire department is dealing with an arsonist. that's what i heard from a battalion chief. she gave me an update on this investigation. she's telling us that they are dealing with a series of four suspicious fires all of them concentrated in one east oakland neighborhood near bancroft and seminary avenues. those were all trucks that were set on fire between about 9:00 and 11:00 last night. now, additionalry there was -- additionally there was a fifth fire that broke out in west oakland that does not seem to be connected to those other fires. an arson investigator was called into all of these various scenes to gather evidence last night. these were from what we saw older model pickup trucks full of cardboard and other items set on fire. most of what burned was the debris and the other tie tems. the fire -- other items. the fire seems to be put out quickly. they didn't do a whol

alex savidge spoke with the chp about driving conditions and joins us live. good afternoon, alex. >> reporter: good afternoon to you. the rain isn't falling here in foster city at the moment but the roadways and the freeways are still wet all around the bay area. it was a soggy ride into work for many commuters. this is what things looked like driving down 101 across the peninsula today. the chp says they did see a lot more crashes this morning. a number of those single car spinouts that they attribute to the rain. the chp says the easiest way to avoid getting into one of those accidents in this wet weather is to simply slow down and don't follow that car in front of you, too closely. >> maybe a rule of thumb for every ten miles an hour you are going, that's how many car lengths you should be. at 65 miles an hour, that's six cars. you may want to increase that on a wet roadway and keep your eyes on the road. >> reporter: the chp is asking all commuters to leave the house earlier so that you are not in a rush getting off to work or school. people we talked to o

alex savidge is live with more. >> reporter: well, a big concern in this area is the flooding, especially here near the creeks to flow through marin county. but another big issue is the wind. that's what a lot of people are concerned about. that's why for the past few hours we've watched as crews have come out here to deal with a couple of troublesome trees here along this creek, trees that could have easily come down in this storm. workers from tree masters were busy this morning cutting down four white acacia trees near downtown mill valley. they almost fell down during a storm a couple of weeks ago. with heavy rain and gusty winds moving in, the owner says he's had three times as many calls from people who want their trees dealt with. that's compared to a normal day. >> when you have rain and wind combined, that's a sure recipe for trees to fall over. a lot of people are concerned. >> reporter: downed trees were an issue last night with the first round of this rain. this was a large tree that toppled near marshal along highway 1. to stay ahead of storm-related problems, marin county's

alex savidge explain why police say the pair was targeted. >> reporter: the two victims were walking through this neighborhood in pittsburg last night. when a car pulled up and someone started shooting. the 22-year-old man was hit in the arm. the 19-year-old woman was struck in her lower back. she will collapsed in the flowerbed of a nearby home. >> she was laying here. >> reporter: the man who lives here tent want to show his -- didn't want to show his face but told me he heard the woman screaming for help. he put pressure on her wound before help arrived. but he says he was nervous steps outside following the gunfire. >> it was kind of scare scary there -- kind of scary. >> reporter: one neighborhood said he heard at least eight shots coming from this intersection. the two victims ran down the street trying to escape the gunfire. the shooter was in a red or maroon car and targeted this woman. >> i don't think this was random. >> reporter: both the man and woman are in stable condition at the hospital. both are cooperating with police. investigators are continuing to interview poten

alex savidge is here now to tell us how this turned into a hit and run. alex?reporter: well, good morning, to you. one to two three drivers racing here in fairfield left the scene. it was an innocent driver trying to make this left hand turn who was t-boned by one of those speeding cars last night. this was after 5:00 here at the intersection of lopes road and canyon hills drive. the innocent driver behind the wheel of a black mazda sedan died here at the scene. police say his car was struck by an infiniti coupe. witnesses had seen the infiniti racing a black toyota pickup truck right before the crash happened. one neighbor said she and several people tried to safe the life of the man in the mazda by giving her cpr. >> this gentleman who actually was deceased, he was just -- just driving down the road. had no idea this was coming. >> reporter: there was also a man in the infiniti who suffered life-threatening injuries. police believe he was one of the two racers involved in last night's crash. police say they are looking for the second driver. that person was b

alex savidge live in san leandro to tell us how sick people who were asleep at the time escaped safely. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning. all of those people who live inside this duplex in san leandro made it out thanks to a neighbor who warned everybody about this fire although we did just find out from firefighters that a dog was killed in this fire, a yellow lab. she was found hiding under one of the beds in one of the downstairs bedrooms. let me give you a look at the scene. you can see alameda county firefighters still out here this morning making sure this fire is all the way out. keeping an eye on some of the hot spots. it's a two-story home that caught fire on fairway drive near doolittle. this fire began at 4:30. when firefighters got here, flames were pouring from both floors. crews were forced to fight the fire from outside. this duplex has two different units in it. upstairs, a grandmother was sleeping with her two grandkids and they wouldn't have woken up if it weren't for a downstairs neighbor who ran up banging on ther to. that man may have helped to save se

ktvu alex savidge tells us the person who died was an innocent driver. g, alex. >> reporter: good morning, to you. police this morning here in fairfield are also searching for one of the two drivers involved in this street race that happened here last night. it's a street race that ended with a deadly crash. the man who was killed the innocent man who was killed -- [ inaudible ] when a speeding car slammed into him. this happened just after 5:00 last night. the innocent driver behind the wheel of a black mazda sedan. >> two of the cars were speeding and this gentleman who was the thief he was just driving down the rode. had no idea this was coming. >> reporter: police say the driver of that mazda was struck by an infinity coop. witnesses saw that infinity racing a black toyota pickup truck. police are looking for that driver of a pickup truck. and that driver left the scene after last night's accident. we should also point out the man who was driving the infinity. one of the two racers involved here also suffered life threatening injuries and taken to the

alex savidge is live with this latest rather disturbing discovery. ning, alex. >> reporter: good morning. pet owners here in the outer richmond are nervous after finding out four suspicious meatballs were discovered on the sidewalk. here on the street where we are this morning, close to fulton. that discovery was made on sunday night. police are testing the meatballs found on the street to figure out if they are poisonous. police say they do look similar to other meatballs found in the twin peaks neighborhood over the weekend. those meatballs more than 20 of them were found to be poisonous. they were hidden in bushes and shrubs. they had clearly been left behind with the intent to hurt or kill pets. police are warning pet owners in this area to stay alert when they go out for walks and be aware of what this animals are eating. >> disappointing. upsetting that people do that for seemingly no benefit. i don't really understand it. probably need to stop it. >> reporter: and this all comes on the heels of what happened last july when hundreds of meatballs

alex savidge is joining us now with who police are searching for now this morning. >> reporter: good morning, to you. police are trying to track down one of two drivers that were racing each other last night. and it was a race that ended with a deadly crash here at this intersection. the man who was killed an innocent driver he was simply trying to make a left turn here on to this street when he was t- boned by a speeding car involved in that race. the man that was killed had nothing to do with that race. this happened just after 5:00 last night here at the intersection of lopes road and canyon hills drive. the innocent driver behind the wheel of a black mazda sedan died here at the scene. witnesses saw that infinity racing a black toyota pickup truck just before the crash happened. one neighbor says she and several other people tried to save the life of the man in that mazda who was caught in the middle of a dangerous drag race. >> i ran over and tried to assist in helping him make sure he was staying with us. at the point he did have a pulse when we were there and

ktvu's alex savidge is live in san rafael at a fire station where they have sandbags for people who want to be prepared. good morning, alex. >> reporter: well, good morning to you. we're sort of in between the storm systems right now. folks up here in marin county know they are not out of the woods just yet. more heavy rain expected tonight into tomorrow morning. that's why fire station number 2 will be a popular spot here in san rafael. a lot of people likely driving by. they have sands, bags. i didn't do a good job of filling those bags. a lot of people will be coming here. they will need the bags to protect the homes against the possibility of flooding with heavy rain moving into this area. let me show you what things look like last night. this was as the storm system blew through the bay area bringing heavy flooding up in the marin county area. this is video along highway 1 south of tomales. there was a large tree that toppled last night near marshal, along highway 1. that tree came down on top of power lines. the same thing happened across the bay area yesterday because wind gusts w

alex savidge is joining us live with the details of a major evacuation from that building. alex? >> reporter: well, good morning to, you dave. scary moments for people who live in this high-rise building here near san francisco state university after a fire broke out inside one of the units that's on the 6th floor and people who live above where that fire was burning said they smelled quite a bit of smoke this morning. more than 200 people had to be evacuated from the place. many of them are students at the nearby university. two people were hurt in this fire. taken to the hospital. one of them was a man we saw in the back of an ambulance. another was a woman being given oxygen at the scene. firefighters haven't said exactly what condition they are in. this fire started after 12:30 this morning at this apartment building on camden drive. it began in an apartment on the 6th floor. everyone on the floor was evacuated. many left. the crew responded. >> they didn't do anything at first. we saw people outside telling people to get out. we got out. went down the stairs. >> reporter: wh

ktvu's alex savidge is at the scene where police have been searching for the hit-and-run driver for hours. good morning, alex. >> reporter: well, good morning to you. the investigation has wrapped up here at the scene of this crash. now officers are on the lookout for a dark-colored suv that hit a man who was in this crosswalk early this morning trying to cross van ness. it's unclear at this point if the pedestrian had a green light at the time of the accident. the suv was up coming south on van ness and the driver kept on going after this crash. police are not sure exactly how fast the suv was going. the man who was hit has critical injuries and is at san francisco general hospital. the crash happened before 2:30 this morning. it's right outside of city hall. the victim in this case, a man in his 50s flew through the air landed in the middle of the intersection. at the time he was carrying a bag full of recyclables. bottles, cans strewn across the street. the san francisco police department's major accident investigation team came out here and gathered evidence but they've seen cleared t

ktvu channel 2 reporter alex savidge is at the house.lly they are okay. >> reporter: yeah no one hurt out here. but this family was certainly startled by this huge tree branch that fell right on top of their place early this morning. you can see what is left behind here. this was a branch from a large tree that sits right behind their home and it broke off early this morning and fell on top of their place. firefighters have come in and cut up this tree. but that branch that dropped, damaged part of the home and two cars parked in the driveway. this all happened just before 3:00 this morning at this home that is on seventh avenue. three people were inside at the time. a young man who i spoke with this morning along with his mother and stepfather. they were all sleeping. >> i thought it was some kind of earthquake. it woke you up immediately. it shook the entire house. it was crazy. >> reporter: that family came outside to find a tree on top of their house and two cars. there was some damage there but thankfully it was mostly the roof of t

ktvu alex savidge will have more from fairfield in our next half hour. >>> concord police are looking for three men they say forced their way into a home, taped up a boy and his grandmother and robbed them. it happened at 3:15 yesterday afternoon. >> he was in a state of shock when i was talking to hill. by the time he calmed down once the police got here. when i came out, he was obviously very upset. >> this morning the three suspects are described as hispanic and between the ages of 19 and 30. one had a short buzz cut with a birthmark above his upper lip. two were armed with handguns. >> fremont police are investigating -- that happened last night on duster berry way. when firefighters arrived they found an overturned vehicle next to the tracks. there were two people inside. one was unconscious and had to be extricated. both people had to be taken to the hospital. >>> police officers from the bay area will had to fresno today. died last monday in a crash on highway 99. they were responding to a traffic accident and hit a guardrail. after graduating from the academy together, gonzale

ktvu reporter alex savidge just arrived on the scene and we'll have a live report at the top of the hour. >>> now to our continuing coverage of the california drought. despite today's impending rainstorm, the call to conserve is growing much louder. last night the santa clara valley water district voted to ask customers to cut water use by 20%. that is up from 10% last month. the district is also digging deeper into ground water supplies. the situation statewide is the worst they have ever seen. >> it gets harder every drought because we already have that low flush toilet. we already have our low shower head or whatever. >> here are the local conservation numbers. they asked for a 10% reduction. customers are using less water. official numbers come out next week. marin's water district asked for a 25% reduction. usage there down 17% compared to a similar week last february. and east bay mud urged 10% cut. usage there dropped nearly 4.5%. nasa took these photos of folsom lake. hard to believe. this is near sacramento. the last picture taken in 2011 when the lake was at 97% capacity. now t

ktvu's alex savidge joins us live from the crash scene to tell us what is happening there right now. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning to you, tori. pittsburg police have confirmed this was a stolen truck killing the driver and the accident also took out a pair of power poles here on west 10th street near beacon street where we are. you can see both directions of the roadway blocked right now. more than 200 people are without power because of this accident and if you look down there, you can see a lot of crews are out here including pg&e crews trying to do repair work and get the power turned back on. the accident was at 1:00 this morning. because police believe this truck was stolen when they arrived here at the scene. officers moved in with their guns drawn. that truck had slammed straight into a power pole and pg&e workers had to come in and de- energize some of the downed lines to make this scene safe for others. the man driving the truck was pronounced dead at the scene. and all morning this crash has made life difficult for people who live nearby. they woke up to fin
