ktvu channel 2 reporter alex savidge is in emeryville right now with how the chp is asking people to prepare. alex. >> reporter: good morning to you. it will be in all likelihood a wet ride into work. we are here at the bay bridge toll plaza right now. you can take a look at the conditions. the roads are dry but that may change very soon. strong storm cells are moving through the area. according to the national weather service. there is a possibility of lightning and hail with some of these cells. the rain of course arrived yesterday here in the bay area with showers on and off all day long. this is the start of a long period of wet weather and the chp is preparing for problems on the roads. when it rains officers typically see twice as many crashes as they usually do. and even during breaks in the rain drivers still have to stay alert according to officers because the roads do remain wet. now the chp is reminding everyone to slow down, make sure you have the headlights on. it's also a good idea to check on the windshield wipers and make sure they are in proper working order and make

alex savidge is live with the evidence that investigators have to go on. good afternoon, alex. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. san francisco police say surveillance cameras in this area captured some of what happened last night here near turk and taylor. this is where an argument on a street corner ended with gunfire. you can see san francisco police officers out here right now. they've maintained a presence out here ever since last night's shooting. we understand a man last night fired into a crowd of people and left seven of them wounded. take a look at some cell phone video posted online overnight. it shows the chaotic scene following this shooting with victims down on the ground. the shooting was just before 9:00. the victims were all men and police say they were all hit in their arms and legs. all were taken to san francisco general hospital and they have since been released from the hospital. it was a frightening scene to say the least for people who live nearby. one neighbor says he feels lucky he was not hurt. >> oh, god, i feel blessed. i'm cons

ktvu's alex savidge is live with the challenge facing fire investigators. good afternoon, alex. >> reporter: good afternoon to you. fire investigators still haven't been able to get inside this building and they won't be able to do so until it is made safe. construction crews right now are continuing work out here. they are trying to lessen the likelihood of a collapse and what they are doing with that large crane is tearing down one of the taller six-story sections of this building. this is in all likelihood where the fire started. the contractor this morning continued demolition at this 172-unit apartment building that is near 4th and china basin. while they clear out charred wood and metal debris, firefighters are still here on scene keeping an eye for smoldering hot spots under the rubble. city building inspectors have been called in here as well to check the integrity of the structure as demolition moves forward. once the place is safe to enter, investigators will have to figure out what started this massive fire that broke out tuesday afternoon. that c

alex savidge is joining us live at the richmond police station now. this investigation is in its early stages. what is going on? >> reporter: good morning, to you, dave. witnesses did report seeing a suspicious car speeding away from the shooting scene last night and detectives do want to speak with the people inside that car. it's described as a burgundy sedan with gold rims on it. that is the best lead investigators have to go on this morning. the shooting happened just before 10:00 last night. it was near the intersection of florida avenue and south fourth street. the victim in this case was a woman in her 30s and she was found lying on the sidewalk there. she had been shot several times in the upper body. paramedics did come out and tried to revive her there, but she was pronounced dead. officers were in that neighborhood and they did hear this gunfire but the department shot spotter detection system is what helped them pinpoint exactly where the shooting was. >> the shot spotter was very critical in that we were able to listen to the shots and gi

let's go to alex savidge who is in the city's chinatown where fbi agents are still looking for evidence at one of the raid sites but there's one thing slowing down the process. alex? >> reporter: well, good afternoon, tori. this is one of the spots raided by the fbi this morning. this building behind me along an alleyway in chinatown. it belongs to the chinese free mace -- chinese free mason. they are trying to cut open an antique safe as they search for ifd. it sounds like they -- for evidence. it sounds like they are having trouble. the fire department was called in to help open the safe. agents served a search warrant here at this location as part of this widespread criminal investigation involving state senator leland yee and the fbi does confirm they've arrested raymond chow, the president of the freemason association. these are recent photos of chow taking part in a ceremony in chinatown. he's a number of people arrested today. agents are not revealing much about the nature of the investigation. >> this morning, the fbi is conducting multiple search warrants and arrests. we ask th

ktvu's alex savidge is live in san francisco. what we're learning about how it may have started. >> reporter: good afternoon to you. right now, firefighters are worried that portions of this building could easily come crashing down and later on today, the contractor will be bringing in cranes i'm told to take apart certain sections of the building, including this corner you are looking at that you can see looks very precarious. firefighters still spraying water on it. there is a danger of this section of the building and other sections collapsing. this fire is still not all the way out. crews have spent all morning on this building when it began to burn yesterday. it flared up several times overnight. this massive fire forced two people in two neighboring buildings across the street to evacuate. the heat broke windows at those buildings and the sprinklers caused water damage at the strada apartment building across the street. a short time ago, we caught up with a husband and wife still not allowed back in their unit but they were

i'm alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> traffic signals are back up and working at a busy richmond intersection after a poem was knocked down following a long police chase. the chase started in sacramento and ended in a crash at carlson boulevard in richmond. it began around 12:30 this morning after police tried to make a routine traffic stop in downtown sacramento near the capitol. officers say the driver refused to pull over and led them on a chase going more than 100 miles an hour onto interstate 80. the car ran over a spike strip in vallejo but kept going due to safety issues. officers called off the pursuit and lost sight of him. but a few minutes later, the driver took the carlson boulevard exit going too fast. >> the driver failed to negotiate the turn and ended up taking out a light pole which you can see here behind me. however, the light pole stayed attached to the vehicle. >> the driver jumped out of the car and tried to run but was caught about a block away. >>> outside our doors, sunny skies with temperatures warms in the 70s around the bay area this afternoon. that wi

alex savidge is here now to explain why authorities say terrorism seems unlikely.d morning. >> the head of interpol said it appears one of those two iranian men was being smuggled and planned to seek asylum in germany. authorities have not found ties to terrorist groups. interpol has released new images of those two men who used stolen passports to board that missing airlines flight 370. it disappeared four days ago. now, authorities say the men traveled to malaysia using their valid iranian passports, then apparently used stolen austrian and italian passports to board the plane. the plane disappeared from the radar with no distress signal sent out. it was carrying 239 people. now, for the families of those on board the missing jetliner, it's an agonizing wait for answers. this was the scene in beijing where frustrated relatives packed a meeting with airline and airport authorities. international authorities say as difficult as it might be to imagine there's still the slim hope of -- hope of finding survivors. relatives in china say the worst part is not knowing wh

alex savidge is in richmond this morning to tell us what this proposal means for both employees and thers. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morningth. this plan has not been finalized. but the richmond city council did green light a proposal that would raise the min -- minimum wage in the city. right now, the minimum wage stands at 8 -- at $8. if it does take effect, it would increase to 12.37 an hour by 2017. last night's vote came after the mayor decided to pull the plug on a plan that would have put this on a vote to the november ballot. city leaders decided ta was time to act immediately for low wage workers where close to 20% people live below the poverty line. still, this wage hike has its critics. some worry it will deter businesses from hiring. >> it's a real issue. i think we need to do it intelligently. people need a wage increase and do it in a way that doesn't cause us to lose jobs. >> reporter: here's how richmond would stack up against other bay area cities. san francisco right now has the highest minimum wage at 10.74. san jose just behind that at 10.15 and oakland p

alex savidge is on the scene in fremont where the fires are effecting the school day. alex, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you. all of these fires were set around the same time in the warm springs neighborhood. one of them was set here on the campus of james leech elementary school and it was burning right here on the outside of this portable building we are showing you. it houses the ymca preschool and after school program for students. those students will have to be moved to another room. fremont firefighters got the call at this school at 3:00 this morning. as crews responded to the first fire, they noticed smoke from a second fire. it was a shed at a nearby little league field that was burning. it's unclear what was inside the shed. and around the same time, there was also a fire at a public bathroom at warm springs park. investigators say someone had set fire to the door of the women's restroom there. a fremont police sergeant spotted that third suspicious fire. >> all three fires were burning at the same time and fortunately the fire department

alex savidge is live at the richmond station. armed robberies on the rise in this area and police say in many cases people are distracted by their smart phones as they are walking away from the itch aremond b.a.r.t. station. that's part of the reason the warn something going out to commuters. victims are being followed in many cases as they leave the station and then held up a few blocks away. that's why later on today, officers will be happening out fliers at the richmond station. richmond police says they've taken 18 reports. the robbers seem to be targeting commuters distracted by their mobile devices. oftentimes they are disstrarblthed listening to -- distracted listening to headphones as well. some b.a.r.t. drivers admit they get distracted. >> i see the same thing, putting their headphones on or they are just focused on their phone. i see a lot of people doing it. i'm gonna stop doing it. >> reporter: in these recent case, the robbers have been young men working in small groups of two or three. police say they are stealing

ktvu's alex savidge is live to explain how this case could be connected to another assault at a neighboring school. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning to you, tori. two girls groped at two neighboring schools here in oakland in this particular neighborhood and the -- the latest sexual assault was just last week. it was here at the world academy in oakland where we are this morning. it was a girl who was assaulted by a man who snuck onto campus. in response administrators have taken steps to improve security here at the school. later today, there will be a meeting for parents to find out more about the security changes. it was last friday when oakland police rushed to this school on 28th avenue near international boulevard after a strange man came onto campus and inappropriately touched a 7- year-old girl. that man managed to get away before officers could get here. now police are saying they believe the man involved in last week's assault could be the same person who attacked a 6-year-old girl at the think college now elementary school, a few blocks away. that crime happened back

alex savidge is in san francisco with some of the changes muni riders will see. ter: pam, good morning to you. san francisco transit officials will vote today on a series of changes hoping to improve on time performance for muni. it's a system that often can be -- has been called slow and unreliable but muni is trying to change that with a complex approach here they will make a lot of changes among other things. the plan would eliminate some routes and create some routes. this is all known as the transit effectiveness project and it would be the first big overhaul for muni in 30 years. they will vote today on whether to green light the project which has been in the works since 2008. now this plan was developed with public input and in some cases buses would be picking up more often on other routes they would come less often. there would also be express buses and expanded hours of operation. also under the plan, the mta would make infrastructure changes along certain routes and that in all likelihood would help to improve pedestrian safety in those areas. now the p

alex savidge is live outside police headquarters this morning with the best lead investigators have right now. alex. >> reporter: good morning to you. witnesses did see a car speeding away from that shooting scene last night. but beyond that homicide detectives don't have a whole lot to go on and that is why they are hoping more witnesses will come forward here. the shooting happened just before 10:00 last night. it was near the intersection of florida avenue and south fourth street. the victim in this case was a woman in her 30s and she was found lying on the sidewalk. she had been shot several times in her upper body. paramedics came out and tried to revive her but she was pronounced dead at the scene. there were officers in that neighborhood doing patrols at the time. they heard the gunfire and then on top of that the department shot spotter detection system then led them directly to where the victim was. now there is no description on the shooter police are looking for this morning. but neighbors did see a car leaving the neighborhood in a hurry. >> there was a report of a burgundy ve

alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. >>> 7:06. the chp is investigating what they believe is a hit-and-run accident this morning. a woman was killed on a freeway offramp in san jose. drivers called in. they reported a person on the saratoga offramp the northbound 280 about 3:20 this morning. when crews got there, they found a woman on the ground who had been hit by a car. she was pronounced dead there at the scene. investigators are trying to figure out if she jumped from the overcrossing and then was hit or if she was walking near the offramp. >>> 7:07. the suspects in the hate crime case at san jose state university are due back in court this afternoon. the four students are scheduled to be formally charged in the case that's prompted several campus protests. prosecutors say the white students tormented a black roommate for weeks with several racist acts in the dorm room they shared on campus. the university has suspended the four students and launched an investigation. >>> 7:07. students at santa clara university are being told

live this morning in the newsroom, alex savidge. >>> this morning investigators in mountain view areroyed one house and damaged another. it started around 2:45 yesterday afternoon in a shed between the two homes on worth um court. fortunately, everyone was able to get out safely. one neighbor captured the fast-moving flames on a cellphone camera. >> the wind shifted and caught my house, too. >> reporter: you watched it catch your house on fire? >> oh, yeah. oh, yeah. >> firefighters say it could take a while to determine the cause of the fire, but they say it does not appear to be suspicious. >>> all right. tori, time is 8:35. is man was arrest inside san leandro accused of trying to kiss a young boy near a middle school. it allegedly happened 8:00 yesterday morning in the parking lot of a shell gas station across from bancroft middle school. the gas station cashier says he noticed a man in his 60s acting strange. then he says he saw the man approach a group of children and tried to kiss one of them. the man later turned himself in to police. the children were not hurt. >> it's scary
