alex savidge has been following this story. last 15 minutes spoke with people who were able to escape that fire. good morning alex. >> and tori good morning to you. this is a huge fire here in this neighborhood that again, burned through three homes this morning. two people were sent to the hospital. they were inside when this fire started. you can see the steam here. the police tape up in this area blocking off this street. this street right here that you're looking at is bright street. it's between randolph and stanley, and that's where this fire is taking place. again, it began in one home and then these flames were so huge they burned right through to two neighboring homes. i want to bring in right now one of the people who was inside the original home that caught fire. this gentleman is jordan walker. you were inside this morning and all of a sudden you smelled smoke. what did you wake up and see? >> yes, when i smelled smoke i'm sleeping and i smell it, and all i do, i hear screaming and the next thing you know my dad sai

ktvu alex savidge has been talking to fire investigators. there, so what are they saying? >> reporter: well, dave, good morning to you. nova to fire investigators are mapping all of the fires that broke out early this morning. gathering evidence at the variation crime scenes. we're right at the end of columbine lane. and up this path. up this hill here is where a fire was set early this morning. investigators believe it was set intentionally. you can see the area is roped off there. this is a fairly small fire as they all were. this one a quartier of an acre or so. this was one of six suspicious fires that was set early this morning and they all broke out just within three hours of each other. they were all in this same area near 101 and highway 37 here in novato. five of the fires burned through brush but there was one fire set inside of a garage and burned a car. that was on trinity drive. and in that case the homeowner suffered smoke inhalation when he came down and put out that car fire himself. he was taken to the hospital but is expect

ktvu alex savidge is in oakland this morning where police are attempting to sort out exactly what happened. alex. >> reporter: there is a lot to sort out here. oakland police are questioning they say at least three people about this possible kidnapping. you can see behind us here crime scene tape is still up. investigators are still out here gathering evidence at the scene. this is the house where those three people were taken into custody not long ago. it's up on the right hand side. this is an 75th avenue. just off bancroft. and you can hear police officers ordering people out of the house this morning. everyone inside did give themselves up peacefully. a sergeant told me this all began with a call to police around 10:00 last night. someone reported a woman who was being held against her will at this house. now police checked several different houses before they wound up here at this place on 75th avenue. i'm told the victim was rescued and doing fine. police cannot say why she was being held. that is part of what they are looking into now. we will get more information. if we learn anyth

kuts's alex savidge is live -- ktvu's alex savidge is live with the many questions oakland leaders are trying to answer. good afternoon, alex. >> reporter: tori, good afternoon to you. the city has launched an internal investigation to figure out how this former oakland police officer has been receiving a $52,000 a year disability payout work working as an fbi agent. the former officer at the center of the controversy has been identified as aaron mcfarlane. he retired from the force in 2004 after reportedly suffering leg injuries on the job. four years later, he was hired by the fbi after passing a fitness test. according to one report mcfarlane was involved in a shooting as an fbi agent last year, killing a friend of boston bombing suspect tamarla in dzhokhar tsarnaev. now they are going through records to figure out how he was getting the disability payment from the city while still working in law enforcement. while they don't have the details yet, administrators say it's possible this case falls in a gray area. >> the real question is the job that they are doing, the second job they

alex savidge is in half-moon bay where the pilot is from. just talked with a man who worked with him. >> reporter: well this veteran stunt pilot was based here out of the half-moon bay air pilot. and this morning those who knew 77-year-old eddie andreini are remembering him as someone who put his family above everyone else. this was the scene yesterday. witnesses captured much of what happened yesterday at the air show event as his plane was upside down and very low to the ground. that is when the plane struck the ground and skidded in front of that huge crowd there. the plane burst into flames with andrea know still inside of it. friends say he had been flying since he was 16 years old. he performed in more than 1,000 air shows across the country. a man we talked to this morning saying he was a skilled pilot, a loving husband, father, and grandfather. >> his family, his friends he cared about people. you know. i he really generally cared about people. that's what i loved about eddie. >> reporter: here's youtube video of andreini from a sacr

ktvu's alex savidge spoke to that mother, he joins us live to let us know how she is defending her actions. good afternoon, alex. >> reporter: well, tori, good afternoon to you. she was quite emotional when i talked to her. delia garcia-bratcher told me she never laid a lad on that 12- year-old boy -- a hand on that 12-year-old boy in santa rosa. but over the weekend, the 30- year-old mother was arrested on suspicion of child abuse and sheriff's investigators say she came onto campus during lunch friday confronted a fifth grade boy putting her hands on his neck and warning him not to bully her daughter. investigators say students witnessed that assault and the boy had red marks on his neck when deputies arrived here at the campus. but delia garcia-bratcher's uncle said the accusations just don't fit. >> she's a real loving mother. she has five kids of her own. takes real good care of them. they are always clean. they got -- she provides everything for them that they need. she's a really good mother. >> reporter: as school to the started this morning -- got started this morning, staff membe

alex savidge is at the scene. hail lex, we're -- alex, we're getting a look at surveillance video that shows the crime? >> reporter: we are. i just saw that video and really, it's disturbing to watch. it shows the driver purposely veering their car into a man who was standing here in the middle of the street last night. this happened on webster near 29th just before 9:30. now this is a still image from that surveillance video that shows a silver car that was involved in this crash speeding away from the scene. oakland police haven't said what type of car this might be but this afternoon, detectives are trying to track down the driver who can be seen aiming their car at a 50-year-old man in the street and then plowing right into him and taking off. the motive is unclear here but just before the crash, surveillance video shows two people punching the victim while he's down on the ground. moments after that, a car comes racing up the street and then strikes the victim and leaves. the man's name is not being released.

ktvu's alex savidge spoke to the dog owner who made the disturbing discovery. what did she tell you, alex? >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. the woman who called all of this into police works as a dog trainer in this neighborhood. she told me this morning, she found this plate with meat on it. it was resting right on top of these bushes. she made the discovery yesterday. this is near sunset reservoir, a popular place for people to come and walk their dogs. >> right across the street. >> reporter: getting the word out to neighbors. she says she came across this plate with lumps of raw meat on it, at 24th and ortega. the plate had candles and quarters on it and the meat looked to be laced with something. >> there were pills inside the meat. we don't know whether they are prescription or vitamins. we have no idea. we just called the police. >> reporter: crime scene technicians from the san francisco police department collected the meat and sent it to a lab for testing. people out walking their dogs this morning heard about the latest scare and they are taking prec

we're live this afternoon in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you, alex. >>> san francisco police are investigating a deadly shooting in the city's potrero hill neighborhood. it happened about 9:15 last night on turner terrace in the public housing area. the victim was shot in the head and taken to san francisco general hospital where he was pronounced dead. police say extra officers had to be called in after a large crowd gathered at the hospital. so far, there's been no arrests. >>> san jose-based ebay is asking its customers to reset their passwords after hackers gained access to their system. and now millions of customers could be affected. brian flores joins us with more. >> good afternoon. ebay has more than 148 million active accounts worldwide. they are not saying how many were affected. but as a precaution, they are telling all of their customers to change their passwords just in case. the company says hackers breached the system between late february and early march. but ebay didn't find out about the hack until a couple of weeks

ktvu's alex savidge joining us live. you're at bishop o'dowd high school in oakland. st got started out there. i can hear what's going on alex. >> reporter: this demonstration organized by bishop o'dowd parents who say they want to show their support for teachers here at this school who they feel have been put in a very tough spot being asked to sign that morality clause that we've been talking about for the past week or so. this is the scene here. you can see close to 100 people, this is parents, some teachers, and some students are lining the entrance here to the school. this is the last day of class, by the way, here at bishop o'dowd, and you can see they're holding signs. cars are honking as they pass by. the folks involved in this demonstration are calling on the diocese to back away from controversial language that was inserted into teacher contracts. the diocese wants to require teachers to adhere to catholic church teachings in their private lives as well as their professional lives. several teachers have refused to sign that clause. others have simply quit. so

we're live this afternoon in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you, alex. >>> the cleanup continues in san leandro where an out-of- control car caused a lot of damage to two vehicles and a house. the 19-year-old driver told us he fell asleep at the wheel around 3:15 this morning and drifted off the road. his nissan plowed through the front yard of a home, took out a white picket fence and slammed into a subaru in the driveway. that truck hit a neighbor's parked car which crashed into the house. no one inside was injured. the driver was not injured either. he did not want to be identified but told us he learned a valuable lesson from the accident. >> stay awake. i feel really thankful for no one being hurt. >> police tell us there were no signs the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. >>> a stronger push in the nation's capital to protect smartphone owners from thieves and why one san francisco official says it's become such a big problem he needs $600,000. >>> plus -- a new head coach for the golden state warriors, introduced

alex savidge has been at the crash seen since 4:30. he -- seen since 4:30 he -- scene since 4:30 he has new information. >> reporter: good morning. one neighbor is certain it was a street race that led up to the crash. he's calling on police to step up patrols along richmond parkway where he says the dangerous races are far too common. last night, it was a young woman driving in a car killed when she slammed into a power pole. this crash knocked out power to hundreds of people in the area. it was at about 9:30 last night on girard boulevard, also known as richmond parkway, south of barrett avenue. the woman who was behind the wheel of a ford mustang died here at the scene. richmond police have not said if they believe any other cars were involved here. but a witness who didn't want to be identified said he saw several other cars stopped in the middle of the road following the impact. there was one man who was simply frantic. >> guy was screaming help! help! baby, i'm sorry. i'm sorry. i didn't mean to. we ran to the car to try to help.

alex savidge is joining us with the punishment that some say did not go far enough. >> reporter: pam, good morning to you. the teacher at the center of this controversy admitted to putting his hands on that student. he has spent the past week on leave but district officials say he has now served his punishment so he will be returning to class later on this morning here at patherson elementary school. that is not sitting well with the parents and the father imparticular of nine-year-old julian riviera who believes this teacher is getting off easy based on what happened. what took place was an incident last monday, april 28th. that is when julian a third grader at patterson elementary says he handed in a math test to his teacher. that teacher in return that teacher identified as fred burke told julian that one of his questions was wrong. a december mill point had been misplaced. julian said what happened next? had him in tears. >> he grabbed me like this and slapped me two times in my face. >> reporter: julian's father says that teacher denied slapping the student and described it as a

alex savidge has been on the story since 4:30 this morning. lex, you are in pleasant hill with a safety message that fire officials hope parents can learn from what happened out there. good morning. >> reporter: well, yes, good morning to you. and firefighters here want to get the message out that parents need to keep an eye on their kids with the weather warming up and a lot of people sending to spend more time around those pools. let me show you video of what happened last night. it was in concord where relatives found this 1-year-old boy under water in a backyard swimming pool at a home. he's, however, in stable condition after being rescued by firefighters and rushed off to the hospital. everything was at 6:00. the home is on ducker court in concord. police arrived and found family members performing cpr. paramedics and firefighters got to the house and the boy was taken to the hospital. first in concord, then changen to children's hospital and -- taken to children's hospital. as if often the case, this little boy is not out of the woods ju

alex savidge is joining us from half-moon bay where the pilot was. >> reporter: this long-time stuntie lot ran this air show business behind me here in half- moon bay alistening with his family. 77-year-old eddie andreini has been performing in air shows for nearly half of his life. he was flying upside down and low. as you can see from this video. when his plane hit the ground and skidded in front of a stunned crowd. the plane eventually burst into flames with andreini still inside of it. friends of the pilot say he had been flying since he was 16 years old and performed in more than 1,000 air shows. he was a skilled pie lot and beyond that a great guy. >> just the nicest guy in the world. generous. loved aviation with a passion. >> reporter: this is youtube video from a sacramento air show two years ago when she was performing the same maneuver that led to yesterday's deadly crash. in a trick a knife is attached to the tail of the plane and slices a ribbon that is held 20 feet above the airway. it took five minutes for first responders to reach the plane and in that time the fire s

ktvu alex savidge is live with the punishment and reaction. ex. >> reporter: pam, good morning to you. after a week long suspension, this teacher has been cleared to return to class later today here at patterson elementary school but the boy's father says he will be here as well to protest that decision. he believes what happened here was unacceptable. this third grade student was left in tears after he got a question wrong on a math test. >> he dropped my paper on my desk. grabbed me by my chin and slapped me woman times in the face. >> this all happened monday april 28th last week. there was a report filed. the school district also did its own investigations. those findings haven't been released. nine-year-old julian riviera says he handed in his math test to his teacher fred burg and he was told one question was incorrect. he misplaced a december decimal point. district administrators still say they feel come tortable with burg returning to the classrooms. >> the nature of the investigation is confidential but there was conformation that an

alex savidge has been following the story since 4:30 this morning. e at the gas station with new information about one of the victims. good morning, alex. >> reporter: well, tori, good morning to you. vallejo police say they do have solid leads as they work to track down the person who opened fire last night in the middle of this busy gas station parking lot leaving one man dead and a second man, an innocent bystander wounded. we're told that surviving victim was likely a customer who was just walking inside to pay for some gas when he was struck by gunfire. the clerk on duty last night told me at least five shots were fired. this was just after 9:00 and it happened at the five star gas station that's near sonoma boulevard and interstate 880. police say the shooter fired into a car that was parked near one of the pumps killing a 24- year-old man who was sitting inside. that second man who was sit by gunfire, police say he was not connected to the initial victim. that man suffered a gunshot wound to the foot and he is expected to survive. police don't

that's where ktvu's alex savidge is live this morning and you've got a warning from the chp about heading into the city this memorial day weekend. good morning, alex. >> reporter: probably not a good idea to come to the city unless you really have to. there are events going on, including giants' games going on this weekend. but the chp says expect some big-time backups. a lot of people like to use 280 to get into and out of the downtown area. mean people hop on king street. this memorial day weekend, that will not be an option, at arrest if you want to go south. you can see the warning signs from caltrans letting everybody know starting at 9:00, the southbound lanes of 280 will be closed for important demolition work. now, the closure will last through the weekend with the freeway opening up early tuesday morning. a two-mile stretch of the southbound lanes will be closed and they will be closed during a very busy weekend in this part of the city with the giants playing at at&t park on friday, saturday, sunday, and monday. there will be extra officers onhand doing traffic control to ease c

alex savidge is live at the slash denim store on college avenue. what is happening out there now alex? >> firefighters have left this scene here. they have wrapped up their investigation and the small fire was contained just to the front area of this clothing store. the owner just told me she has been in business here for the past 35 years. you can see the fire burned right through the front wall of this store and the window sill area. this fire started at 4:30 in the morning. we will show you the scene. this is on college avenue near russell. crews moved in and quickly knocked down the flames here. again a very small fire and they were able to keep the flames from spreading to the rest of the store although there may have been water damage done to some of the clothing and the mer chance dice inside the store. the assistant fire chief told me it was a 7-eleven clerk that works across the street that noticed the fire and called it in before it could get out of control. >> because the clerk was on his job and saw the fire really minimized the damage t

alex savidge is in half moon bay where the pilot lived.'ve been talking to people who say he had been flying for most of his life. >> reporter: well, really, a sense of sadness for many in half moon bay. this veteran pilot has several planes parked here at the half moon bay airport. this is also where his airshow business is based. 77-year-old eddie andreini performed at events all around the country. yesterday, he was performing here in the bay area at travis air force base during the "thunder over solano" event. his plane was upside down and flying low when it hit the tarmac and skidded in front of a stunned crowd. the plane burst into flames with eddie andreini still inside it. he died there at the scene. friends say he had been flying since he was 16 years old and had performed in more than a thousand airshows around the country in his career. along with being a skilled pilot, he was also a husband, a father and a grandfather and friends say his family meant everything to him. >> his family, his friends. he cared about people. i person
