ktvu fox 2 alex savidge is joining us live to tell us what we know about that victims condition. good morning, alex. >> reporter: that victim was rushed over to san francisco general hospital last night with life threatening injuries. according to police. they were struck by a car here at the intersection of eighth and market streets. and this crash happened just about 10:30 last night as police were tailing a blue bmw with at least one suspected robber inside. now after that car that was trying to get away hit the pedestrian, the driver sped off with officers in pursuit. one of our cameras captured this chase as police pursued the car all the way across the bay bridge into oakland but that is where officers lost sight of the bmw near the maze. they are still searching for that car and the people inside. this turned out to be the second police pursuit in san francisco this week. on monday you may remember police arrested a wanted employee near fifth and mission. it was a dramatic end to a dangerous chase that began in the bay view. the car being pursued got wedged between two othe

ktvu's alex savidge has more on the message police are trying to send with this operation. >> reporter: just minutes into this morning's crackdown and san francisco motorcycle officers already had several drivers stopped along the embarcadero. police say these cars were picked up on radar going well over the posted 30-mile-an-hour speed limit. drivers in a rush this morning learned an expensive lesson. >> the sheriff's department is completely dedicated to make the streets safer for pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists. slow down. pay attention to what's going on out there. >> reporter: this traffic enforcement operation was a joint effort between san francisco police and the chp. and they weren't just going after speeders. drivers who didn't bother to stop for this giants' fan in the sunglasses. they were kicking themselves moments later when they saw the flashing lights in the rear- view mirror. this pedestrian turned out to be an undercover police officer playing an important role today. >> i'm just a citizen trying to cross the street in one piece. >> reporter: easier said than done

alex savidge is there. alex, good morning. what are you learning there this morning? >> reporter: we doll understand that violent crime detectives are looking into -- we do understand that violent crime detectives are look into this death. the victim was found in this home behind us just off of napa road. you can see the place still surrounded by crime scene tape. we understand there is still more evidence to gather inside. the victim was discovered just before midnight here when fire crews were called out. there were several people inside the home at the time. sonoma police work to secure this scene along with sonoma county sheriffs deputies. at this point investigators are characterizing this only as a suspicious death and they are not offering anymore details. we have been told no one is currently in custody in connection with this investigation. i have been in touch with a spokesperson for the sonoma county sheriffs office working to get more information on this investigation as soon as we learn anything more about this suspicious death here in sonoma we will brin

cute fox 2 reporter alex savidge is live at the scene with -- ktvu fox 2 reporter alex savidge is live at the scene. such a sad story. >> reporter: a tough one in berkeley. good morning to you. officials in ireland do confirm that all five of the people killed in this morning's collapse were students, college students from ireland who were here in the u.s. on temporary visas. we understand from neighbors that what was happening was a 21st birthday party inside this fourth floor apartment building where the balcony collapsed at about 12:30 this morning. these are the library gardens apartments in downtown berkeley, just about a block off shaddock avenue. now, we did hear from one person who lives in this building. they told us they called police and building security about an hour or so before this collapse to complain about this party that was taking place in this unit, what was described as a very loud, out of control party. police are investigating what the young victims were doing before the collapse. how many people may have been on the balcony before it gave way. we're also hearin

ktvu fox 2 alex savidge is there in berkeley.o just learned that some or all of the victims in this case were young irish citizens. i want to show you a statement from ireland's foreign affairs minister. it reads my heart goes out to the families and loved ones of the deceased and those that have been injured in this appalling accident. the 911 calls started coming in just after 12:30 this morning. police got here and found the balcony on the fourth floor came down toppling. alto fall of five people were killed in this collapse and eight others were hurt. some of the people that were hurt have life threatening injuries. berkeley place are still searching through evidence. and maybe the most surprising part about all of this is that this is not an old structure. this building was built just about ten years ago. it has residential units, a number of them up above and it has retail down below encolluding a cafe. very popular here with many of the college students that live close by. at this point other people living in this building

alex savidge has been out there since 4:00 this morning. i know the firefighters are still working hard out there, alex? >> reporter: they are. certainly those hot, dry conditions that helped that fire grow yesterday afternoon similar conditions on tap for today here in this area. firefighters, they have been out here through the night just keeping an eye on the hot spots with see from time to time. some smoke rising from the hillside beyond us here. as we go to the left-hand side, you can really see just how close these flames came to some of the homes in this area. they have burned right down this hill and very close to these backyards here. obviously, this was quite a nerve wracking situation for people who live in this area. the good news is that this fire is 100% contained. and that fire quickly grew to about 500 acres yesterday with helicopters and air tankers coming in to make drops. those flames crept dangerously close to a number of homes. there were people evacuated mainly along grim's beach drive. those homes back up to the contra

ktvu fox 2 reporter alex savidge is joining us live from the city with the traffic enforcement patrolu. this operation here along the embarcadero it just kicked off minutes ago and take a look here. you can already see officers have made a number of stops. we probably counted at least 10 or so so far here. solos as they call them here. they are pulling over cars and drivers that are speeding, violating the rules of the road. they really want to crack down on speeding along the embarcadero. we're told it's a real issue. the speed limit 35 miles an hour and they obviously have found a lot of people going a bit faster than that this morning. they are also looking at reckless driving. also making sure the drivers yield to those pedestrians. very important issue here in the city of san francisco where pedestrians continue to be struck by cars. this is a special joint enforcement operation involving the san francisco police department and the chp. they have the radar gun out and looking for drivers, violating the rules of the road. we talked a short time ago with the san francisco police li

ktvu fox 2's alex savidge live in danville to show us that damage. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning to you. this war memorial is tucked away here in the back of oak hill park. and let me show you what's been done. crews have done what they can to scrub off some of the paint left behind over the weekend. this according to police was the work of vandals and police right now are hoping that surveillance video can help them identify the people who did this. as we push off into the distance there you can probably see there is a camera right above the walking path that leads to this memorial. let me show you there is another camera at entrance to the park as well. when i walked in underneath this camera it snapped my photo and issued a verbal warning about committing acts of vandalism here. there were four spots where this memorial was painted over the weekend. if one case they made reference to an anti-government website. they also wrote the phrase "let's get high " one of the men who helped create the memorial 20 years ago calls this act of v
