good morning, everyone, it's wednesday, september 21st, i'm alex witt alongside louis burgdorf. we're following some breaking news overnight. the city of charlotte, north carolina, is on edge after violent protests erupted over the deadly police shooting of a black man. more than 200 demonstrators gathered last night carrying signs and in some cases verbally taunting officers in riot gear. according to an nbc producer on the scene, authorities say officers used flash bangs and tear gas to disperse that crowd. they add 12 officers were hurt, including one struck in the face by a rock. the unrest began quickly after news spread about the death of 43-year-old keith lamont scott. police say they were serving a warrant on another man yesterday afternoon at an apartment complex when they came upon scott in his car. >> at this point, all we know is they are in the apartment complex parking lot and this subject gets out with a weapon, they engage him, and one of the officers felt a lethal threat and fired his weapon because of that. >> a social media post by a woman who said she is the

i'm alex witt. we are following a developing story overnight. north korea claims they have conducted another nuclear test. the country's state media says it is the fifth and largest detonation so far. saying, it was meant to counter what it calls u.s. hostility. the test comes in the wake of president obama's trip to asia, and on the 68th anniversary of north korea's creation. neighboring south korea detected a seismic event resembling an earthquake near a nuclear site in the northeastern part of their communist neighbor. the test was met with condemnation, including from north korea's longtime ally, china. the white house says the president spoke with south korea's president via phone on air force one overnight. let's get to lucy kafanov from london with a good day to you. what more are we hearing about this latest test by north korea? >> good morning, alex. a north korean state television screens this morning we saw a triumphant announcement claiming to have successfully tested a nuclear warhead.

i'm alex witt.orth carolina's governor has declared a state of emergency after another night of violent clashes between protesters and police in charlotte. this over the shooting death of a black man. governor pat mccrory made the announcement amid escalating tensions in that city, tweeting that he had initiated efforts to deploy the national guard and highway patrol to assist local law enforcement. meanwhile, one person is on life support in critical condition after being shot during the demonstrations last night. initially, the city had reported that person had been killed, but later clarified their condition. officials say that shooting did not involve a police officer. now, several others, including police, were hurt during the protest in the uptown section of the city. officers in riot gear once again used tear gas to try and disperse those crowds, several people were arrested. this marked the second night of violent in the wake of the fatal police shooting of keith scott on tuesday. police say
