alex? >> and a potentially long road ahead for them. thanks very much, chris jansing outside charles de gaulle airport. let's bring in pilot john cox as well as former senior air and safety investigator with the ntsb, greg fife. john, french investigators confirming smoke conditions aboard this plane. sensors detecting smoke in the front lavatory as well as the avionics compartment. what kind of steps can a crew take to fight a smoke or fire condition on board? >> well, alex, in-flight fire is something that is one of the most terrifying things that can happen to a pilot, but we know a number of things. over three minutes there is smoke indications first from a lavatory which is on the left side of the airplane, and then the avionics bay. there's never been a fire confirmed in the avionics bay of an a-320. there's been short circuits in boxes but never a department fire. this is very, very unusual and something the investigators are going to look at. if the crew did get smoke warnings, which i would expect that they did, they're going to start first and foremo

alex, tourism here went down a solid 20%. >> that's extraordinary that number. okay. thanks for all of it. chrisansing outside charles de gaulle airport. as officials release this new video of debris recovered from the mediterranean i was able to talk to msnbc aviation analyst john cox and i asked him what was significant about the smoke aboard the aircraft. >> this event unfolds much more slowly. there's a three minute period where there's six faults that are generated and transmitted to the maintenance facility. there's two smoke events but also indications of overheating on the wind screens, on the right side of the airplane as well as flight control computer issue. but after the six faults, after the last one of these six faults the airplane flies on for a period of four minutes before it starts down and we know there's electrical power to this airplane. this whole event unfolds over a much greater time frame than we initially thought. this tells me as an investigator for something 30 years that we need to keep every option on the table. it may or may not have been an explosive device, it ma

alex boy a has the story. >>reporter: with cameras rolling, plate oh resident george sabers set out for an adventure off the coast of corpus chris it's really a unique experience. and boy, did he find one. we try to find king fish. we let out some life bates and see what we had. we hit a shark. it was an atlantic sharp nose measuring three feet long. saiber was an experienced chack fisherman thought it would be safe to try and cut the shark free. this is the first time one actually turns around and takes charge of the chack. while bringing the distressed shark on board the kayak saiber made a distake. i let go of the line too soon. i wanted to place the head in the the front of the well and what happened was the shark turned around and came back in and charged at my body in my seat. several camera angels captured the tense seconds that followed while the shark thrashed around the kayak inching closer and closer to saiber. as far as fear, i'm surprised i remained as calm as i was. at the rate the shark was coming, i did my best to do evasive maneuvers to avoid getting about it. the shark ended up jumping back in the water, giving

chris, good morning to you. what do we know about this smoke that's been detected on board that plane? >> reporter: well, it's the first indication we have alex of what happened in the minutes leading up to this catastrophic event. it must have been intense heat. experts who looked at the messages that tom talked about say it was all so fast moving from the time they got the first messages to the time contact was lost with that plane, it was only about two or three minutes, so that means this wasn't some sort of small accident. this wasn't somebody going into that lavatory and throwing away a cigarette and a small fire started. this obviously was something far more serious than that. the question is, what caused it and how do we get to that point. as all of this was unfolding late yesterday, this late breaking information, we were getting our first look at some of the debris that was found out in the mediterranean sea. we can show you some of those pictures that were posted on facebook by egyptian officials. obviously, the analysis has begun, they are continuing that search that you talked about. here in france they have sent a ship with spec

barnacle, steve radner, new york times political reporter alex burns, and msnbc contributor and editor of "the fix" at the washington post chrisida, ohio, a and -- in florida clinton at 43% and donald trump at 42%. that's compared to sanders at 44 versus trump at 42. meanwhile in ohio, clinton at 39%. trump at 43. sanders at 43 versus trump at 41 in that head-to-head. and in pennsylvania clinton at 43, trump at 42. sanders leads trump 47-41 in that state. so there's a lot going on in the presidential election process. the frontrunners seem to be neck-and-neck in early polls. i think the only other possibility here, steve, is an independent candidate. whether or not because there's so much high emotion about donald trump and clinton and their unfavorables or both so high in such an unprecedented fashion. i think the discussion about a third party bid is really reasonable. we never got to bill kristol's piece in the last hour. getting an independent candidate on the ballot in all 50 states isless difficult than conventional wisdom has it. the only states whose ballot access deadlines before the end of june are texas and north ca
