alexandria thrived on imports and exports. prominent planters exported hogshead, tobacco, a lot of tobacco, and wheat of course, across the atlantic in exchange for other goods like rum, sugar, and fashionable luxuries. we have also heard about factories operating stores and warehouses for scottish and english merchants to imported those goods across the atlantic. eventually, all those goods made their way right here to alexandria. by 1776, the city had a population of just under 2000 inhabitants. that population would grow to about 5000 by 1800. the residents of alexandria than were shipbuilders, carpenters, merchants, silversmith, blacksmith, jen tree planters and enslaved african americans. tavern keepers and white indentured servants also found themselves here. many of the inhabitants were immigrants from england and scotland and one was a taylor named william karlan. we don't have a portrait of william karlyn. in my mind, this is how i imagine him. for enslaved men owned by either alexandria citizens. so i'd like to do a bit of a deep dive here further into the clothing that carlin made for the enslaved members of alexandria's society because we know precious little about this very, very prominent part of the city's population and through the account book we gain so much more insight into their material lives on the eve of revolution. so carlin's accounts could help us understand the varieties, the quantity and life cycle of clothing within the broader lens of the material life of the enslaved. so here we go. so joe, who is an enslaved man owned by silver smith charles jones appears to receive clothing from carlin twice between 1772 and 1775. charles jones was a very infrequent customer. but in 1772 he received a coat and in 1775 carlin mended his leather breeches, which are the jeans of the time. so this is interesting to me. given the fact that joe's next appearance in any document of any kind in the history orric record is in the virginia gazette and it is a runaway advertisemen

we start here at alexandria's history museum. during the civil war in the 18 sixties, this building like many others in alexandria was used as a hospital. nursing as a practice before the civil war was used as a punishment. . women who were arrested for public drunkenness or prostitution were punished by working as a nurse for a week or two. during the criminal war over in europe, nursing as a practice started to become more of an occupation, especially for women, and during the 18 sixties during the civil war, many women came over to help teach others how this practice of nursing could be used to help these soldiers. so during this time, the practice of nursing was becoming more formalized. the battle of monastic took about -- took place about 20 miles from here. when we think of nurses during the civil war i, dorothy it dick's may come to mind. she was prominent in helping the medical field take off during the war. she was able to appoint 15%, or 3000 of the medical staff during the war, including nurses here in alexandria. ale
