alison kosik at the new york stock exchange to break it all down. a gap are we talking about now. >> >> it's really not a huge gap, but really is big enough at this point to make it into quite the talking point on the campaign trail, whether it's president obama who has made it a recurring theme in his campaign or mitt romney who is calling what president obama is doing as bitter politics of envy. but what seems to be happening is that the rich are getting richer faster than others. there are new figures out from the labor department that show that since the recession, that incomes of the top 10% of workers in this country are up 7%. but then you look at the incomes for the workers at the bottom 10%, and you look at their pay, their pay only rose just 2.5%. keep in mind, though, this trend isn't new. it's really been years in the making at this point. but the gap is becoming more sark. stark. so many still feeling the income divide. just ask one of your neighbors, chances are they're feeling that. >> oh, yeah. an obvious question. what's the cause?

alison kosik is at the new york stock exchange. alison, why the surge in these lawsuits? it is because employers are saying we are fed up for being overworked. work to the bone and not getting paid for that extra time. the other part of is kind of a side effect of the recession because with the recession came those mass layoffs and workers left behind to pick up the slack but the problem is those workers aren't necessarily getting paid for all of that extra work. so what are they doing? taking their cases to court. over 7,000 suits have been filed in federal court just last year. some of their biggest gripes include force to work while off the clock. their jobs are misclassify as exempt from getting overtime and say their work is bleeding into personal time because of our smart phones and telecommuting. you know how it is. you get e-mails in the middle of dinner you have to get to night after night after night. carol? >> i was just going to ask you about that. so is that considered overtime if your boss sends you and e-mail at dinnertime? >> reporter: and that is really k

i'm alison kosik, in today for fredricka whitfield. we begin with breaking news out of new york. as many as seven people have been killed after a van flipped off an overpass on to a transit facility near the bronx zoo. three of the dead are children. cnn's susan candiotti joins me now by the phone. susan, what's the latest on this? >> reporter: well, it's a terrible, terrible accident, certainly, alison, but we're hearing from the police that it's either a car or a van with four adults and three children inside, all dead. they were on an expressway called the bronx river parkway, and the car crossed over the median into the opposing lanes of traffic, flipped over the bridge, and fell a sizable number of feet. we don't know how far, but it was quite a big drop. no one survived. no one sooiurvived. now, where this happened. it fell over just inside the southeast perimeter of the bronx zoo, which is huge. 265 acres. but it happened according to a spokesperson for the zoo, far away from any public area, not near any animals nor exhibits, nor did it affect any visitors. in fact, i'm t

next, alison kosik, there she is in new york.al reserve, putting out a forecast now for the economy. i hope there's some optimism here. >> there's a little more optimism, don. the fed does believe the economy is improving. it's not changing its game plan until it sees the economy make a divisive move one way or another. they're optimisting about unemployment, predicting the rate could fall between 7.8% and 8% by the end of this year. remember, unemployment is at 8.2% now. also, the picture is a bit brighter for economic growth. the fed expecting growth to pick up gradually with growth this year expected to come in between 2.4% and 2.9%. it would be an improvement over 1.7% last year. another thing the fed did is they kept interest rates at historic lows near 0. bhu ben bernanke did say there is a bit of a wild card. that is europe and sort of the blow ball financial markets and what kind of impact. that is really a wild card in all of these predictions. >> the vice chairman of the walmart reooined but not of walmart? >> right, he

alison kosik is at the new york stock exchange. wow. apple.unbelievable. >> it's quite the darling on wall street. quite the darling for everybody else, isn't it, carol? >> if you have stock it is. >> that's true. everybody is buying their stuff too. what goes for wall street so goes what's happening on main street. you look at apple, carol, it's huge. it's becoming a bigger and bigger factor on wall street. it's the world's most valuable company. did you know that just a few weeks ago it came in with a worth of $600 billion. the company is worth $600 billion. the only other company that hit that mark was microsoft back in 1999. one investment group says if apple was in the dow it would be around 15,000. today the dow opened at 13,000 a few second before you came to me. apple shares are up almost 10%. guess what apple did? posted better than expected earnings in sales in the first three months of this year. we did see futures pull a little back after we got a report on durable goods orders. those are big ticket items from airplanes to refriger

alison kosik is here to explain it at all. how big of a drop are you seeing?> reporter: a pretty big drop for walmart. shares dropping more than 5%. now, part of this is because it's a crisis of confidence after "the new york times" broke this stunny story of alleged corruption at walmart. investors want to know what kind of legal ramifications are there for walmart if this story winds up having legs. now this story of "the new york times" over the weekend said with was that is alleged there was widespread bribery and huge cover-up at walmart. "the new york times" says walmart actually paid $24 million over several years in bribes. i'm talking about getting things moved allow the red tape much faster to get the walmarts built. mexico is seen as a growth area and sales up 25% in 2005. in mexico, there are 2,000 walmart stores right now. the story didn't stop with just bribery. walmart of mexico told the headquarters in arkansas about it. alison kosik joins us from new york. alison, my grandfather used to work for the post office.this yet, but the senate plan essentially is going to help people get back on their feet? >> you're talking about the post office, and, yes, this bill will help the post office, but critics say the problem with this bill is it doesn't go far enough. what the bill winds up doing is making it hard for the usps to make the cuts it needs in the first place to save itself. let me give you the big example. the postal service says it wants to close almost 4,000 locations and the senate bill says, okay, close them but we're going to put restrictions on really whether or not you can close them. meaning the postal service first has to prove that these closures are justified with running through lots of studies and public comment. but the thing is the postal service already looked at these closures. they found out that these places are bringing in less than $50 a day and republican congressman darrell issa said if we keep studying this thing, it's going to mean more and more delays and cost milli

alison kosik always following the action on the new york stock exchange. she's with us here today. d was it, if i even want to ask? what's this week like? >> may not want to check out the portfolio yet. the worst week for stocks this year and get ready, it's a tough week this week as well. let's look at how last week was. you look at the dow, down 1.6%, the nasdaq 2.3%, s&p 500 down 2%. yeah, rough week. why? because china. china is showing signs it's slowing down. it kaim in with its economic growth showing that china grew at an annual rate of only 8.1%. sure, that sounds great compared to our economic growth, which is 3%, but we're used to these double-digit figures with china. also china is it one of our biggest trading partners. if china slows down that means it won't buy as much stuff from us. i'm talking about stuff like automobiles, things from cisco and ibm, things from caterpillar, heavy machinery for construction over in china. so you add to those worries europe sloeg down. those are two of our biggest trading partners. that weighs on investors' minds. corporate earnings s

alison kosik let's start with you. us airways, american airlines.s like american's union employees really do want this merger? where does it stand? >> it does sound that way. it's not a question mark. of amr's unions, that's 55,000 people. i'm talking about pilots and flight attendants and ground workers. it's mornt to get that kind of support. then you also have the us airways ceo coming out in a letter to its employees saying you know what, us airways doesn't need to merge with anyone, but a merger with american represents a unique opportunity that we should not ignore. the timing is interesting, too. you look at american airlines it's kind of looking at a white night. the timing is really key. and amr is supposed to go to bankruptcy court next week to throw out its union labor contracts which would likely mean pay cuts. what you saw happening here, our unions, latching on to the possible us airways deal. it's looking to have the best chance to grow. >> i can hear people saying okay, okay, may merging may not merge. what does this do for me it goe

alison kosik says for those getting refunds, this is like christmas so what are people doing with the extra cash? >> exactly. if they get a refund, here's what a capital one survey found they'll do with it. 33% said they plan to spend at least part of the refund. one in four say they plan to save at least part of their refund. 17% say they'll use the refund to pay down some debt and a whopping 5% plan to invest the money. kyra? >> considering where we are in the economy right now, what's the smartest way to spend this money that the point? >> good question. we spoke to the founder of the financial advice blog ask the money coach.com and she told us you don't need to take the fun out of a large refund but does recommend saving some of the money, at least 10% or 20%. she says there are smart ways to spend. for example, advance your career by taking a class or prepay our annual car insurance premiums and told us that refund time is a great time to plan for next year's taxes. checking in with an accountant or tax prepayer earlier in the year to cut next year's bill. kyra? >> what do you t

alison kosik is at the new york stock exchange. should they still be worried today? >> fars being able to use your vooes a card, no. you shouldn't be worried today. what happened were two separate events that were not related. so let's take the first event where over the weekend, some visa credit cards and debit cards didn't work for 45 minutes. visa put out a statement saying they were updating their system during the 45 minutes so there were glitches and visa said it's been fixed, the system is operating as normal, despite the fact some of these transactions were not completed. the hacking case. we first told you about this on friday. we got new details here for you. we found out that 1.5 million account numbers were stolen from global payments. now, what these hackers did not get were people's names, addresses, and social security numbers. global payments is this middle man when you swipe your credit card, global payments processes it aends send the information to credit card companies. it looks like so far visa and mast mastercard were affected but other credit c

alison kosik is here to tell us. >> when i was at the new york stock exchange yesterday, we heard rumbles stock. word got out that facebook was going to list its stock on the other exchange, on the nasdaq. here's what's interesting. the new york stock exchange is, loves its tradition and usually before a three day weekend they go ahead and have this cheer before the "closing bell" to cheer that there's a three day weekend. one of the old guard walked around the floor yesterday and said stand down that cheer because it looks like they lost that facebook listing and so they that cheer. you know, who could blame them, though? this is facebook ipo is being billed as the ipo of all ipos. there are reports it's going to have the ticker fb on the nasdaq. as you can imagine, this is a huge win for the nasdaq. it's one of the most coveted deals among internet companies, you know, giving prestige, giving the nasdaq bragging rights not to mention all the fees that will go to the nasdaq as well. oftentimes you see the nasdaq and nyse compete over these listings. you really saw that competitive spirit
