steel and allegheny technologies shed 5% and 4% respectively, even though they have been expecting steel prices to improve this year. cliffs natural, an iron ore producer, a key fuel for steel furnaces, slid three and a half percent. the new york stock exchange unveiled plans to grow its business without selling itself to the deutsche boerse in germany. that buyout was derailed over anti-trust issues. the nyse will invest in technology and clearing, that's the business of making sure a buyer and seller can fulfill their obligations. the plan came after the exchange reported a better than expected fourth quarter. profits were driven by its tech services and clearing businesses, areas it will continue to focus on. the strategy helped push nyse stock up 4.5%. futures exchanges c-m-e group and the inter-continenal group rallied more than two percent each. remember alcatel-lucent? it was a high flier in the dot- com days and it has rallied strongly this year including a pop today and very heavy volume. shares jumped 13% today...giving it a 40% gain this year. today's buying came after reporti

in the higher elevations of the allegheny, a winter storm warning in effect. two different things to keep an eye on. the net effect will be for people to see the temperatures fall from the 40's or they are right now. they will see some rain for a while mixing and turning into snow in the morning. look a little farther north and west and temperatures are really starting to drop. there is some really cold air getting ready to spill south of the canadian border. we are in a transitional stage for a while until sunday. we will start to see more cold air tomorrow afternoon. here is how it will happen. with two sources of low pressure moving the arctic cold front coming down from the north and west, those two features providing precipitation and all forms. then in this upper level disturbance leaving us with cold weather and will give us snow. it could got a couple of inches and the advisory area. high winds as well. these snow bands will be coming directly out of the great lakes. at many times -- during many years, the great lakes are frozen over by this point. one
