the allegheny there is. any longer than this and it becomes too long to negotiate the curves on the track and too heavy for bridges, structures, roadbeds and so forth. this is about as big as the steam locomotive got. it was designed to pull coal trains enthusiastic mountainous sections in west virginia. it's maybe not surprising the cno would hold onto steam power as it did. really by 1940s, diesel electric proven itself in passenger service and increasingly so in freight. made money hauling coal they would invest in technology for a locomotive like this. this is also the most photographed object we have in the entire museum. not a day goes by when i don't walk by her and somebody posing in a picture for this locomotive. i have a picture of myself as a boy. something about the size it's enormous and grabs people and they think, whoa, what the heck is this. we love it. one of the most popular questions, how the heck duties this thing into the museum? it wasn't easy. it came under its own power, its own wheel

in western maryland when you get into allegheny county over toward hancock a couple of flurries and in garrett county we're picking up some more activity. i really think the activity will be increasing, especially west side of the continental divide past frostburg as we get into later tonight into tomorrow morning. wind advisories will go into effect the next few hours until early monday afternoon, just about everybody in it, gusts 40, 45, maybe even 50 miles an hour. that could be a problem for some. right now we don't have much wind, some gusts near 20, but give it a few hours. by 2:00, 3:00, 4:00 they could be gusting to 40 at davis, if not same as 6:00, 40 in town, cool spots in the mid-30s. the only areas below freezing are the higher elevations in far western maryland and west virginia while the rest of us, it's chilly and damp. it's not a nice night, but if you're going to midnight mass here in a few minutes, not bad. we've got no wind. so 40 feels like 40 and the humidity high, 83%. now tomorrow very windy, sustained wind of 20 or so gusting 40 plus with highs back close to 40.

steep grades, the allegheny mountains, untried technology, really when you think about everything that is involved with it, it was quite a feat. the locomotive behind me was built in 1927, and it mimics the tom thumb, the first steam engine used in the united states. a very unique piece designed by peter cooper. what he ended up doing was building something very similar to what was behind us, the tom thumb. while successful by proving a steam engine could operate, it wasn't successful in the manufacturing world. they couldn't turn them out fast enough. ended up failing on his contract, but what he did do was prove that steam power could be used on the baltimore and ohio's track with its sharp curves and steep grades and was a wonderful piece. but when railroading began in the united states, by the 1830's was 23 miles of track in the entire country. in the beginning there were pulling flour, barrels full of flour. that is the kind of produce that was coming from the river valley and that is where a lot of the revenue was coming from. eventually, passenger service picked up, i would not
