we're going to nbc's allie raffa, who is going to bring us the latest on all of., i apologize for interrupting you if the president takes the podium. we'll take a quick break but away. but that, point this penis have been issued. so, what's next? >> right now, alex, it's a waiting game to see if any of these five comply with the subpoenas, as you mentioned, before the end of the month. right, now they haven't said whether they would, but is appearing on likely. because they've condemned the committee and its probe, and they've all been asked previously to voluntarily answer questions before the committee and all of them have refused. so, if they indeed do not comply with the subpoenas, that committee is left with very few options. the first of which is to refer this to the house ethics committee. this is a committee that is evenly divided between democrats and republicans. so, that is likely to take a very long time to go through that committee. their second option is to recommend criminal referrals to the justice department. this is something we're familiar with,

i want to bring in allie raffa, who is posted up on capitol hill with the latest.put together by congresswoman lucy macbeth, who has been an advocate for changing the gun laws given her personal history. >> reporter: that's right, one of several options that lawmakers on capitol hill have on the table to move on several options that they have been talking about since the shooting yesterday, the house we know is out of session. senators are here on capitol hill today, and the question now is whether this shooting after dozens of school shootings since sandy hook in 2012, nearly a decade ago, come december, will finally be enough to move both sides of the aisle toward some meaningful and bipartisan gun legislation reform. it's truly been a whil wind on capitol hill this morning, the senator emotional, the feeling is still raw. several speaking on the senate floor earlier. the problem here, hallie is while there's lots of options on the table, there's no guarantee that any of these proposals could pass, let alone whether they will pass before senators are expected to

allie raffa is joining us now from capitol hill. hearings have been a long time coming, as you know. i am not sure that all eight are going to be on prime time. you know at least some. but that said. do lawmakers expect to talk to get to the truth of what happened on january 6th? >> well, alex, the majority of lawmakers do. we actually heard from a few of them on the sunday show this morning, laying out why they feel this way, why they expect the truth to be laid out. essentially, they are saying that this is not a tv network or a newspaper or a website, but could potentially strategically give the american public bits and pieces of this evidence. they are saying that this is a bipartisan congressional committee, that has gathered thousands of pieces of evidence from a wide range of people across the political spectrum. and that these are cold, hard facts. there is no bias involved. congressman jamie raskin, who sits on this committee, has said that these public hearings will, quote, blow the roofs off the house. these hearings will

let's go to nbc's allie raffa, joining us from capitol hill as always.'s been over a year of trip trip trip, leap giving up intelligence. some of it significant, but all about this failed coup. will these hearings and of being much must-see tv? >> yeah, alex, well congressman jamie raskin, who sits on the january six committee said recently that these hearings will, quote, blow the roof off of the house. he saying the hearings will do that because they will reveal crimes around the attack on the capitol, on january six, that haven't been alleged yet. alex, i think it's important to note that the committee doesn't have to have these public hearings, they could well wrap up their investigation and submit a report to congress. but they are making a conscious decision to do this because they want to show, with the help of exhibits in the forms of videos, photos, staff testimony, witness testimony. they hope for some lawmaker testimony. to show whatsapp and on january six, why it happened and to explain why it could never happen again. listen to what congress

joining us now is nbc's allie raffa, on capitol hill. also -- a former federal prosecutor.ng us on. this ali, let me join start with you on this one to get your sense as to what the media wants to glean from their five subpoena? >> well in these letters, the committee lays out different reasons for why they want to speak with each of these five lawmakers, but there are two that really stick out to me. specifically in house minority leader kevin mccarthy's case, the committee says that there is renewed interest in skiing with him after this leaked audio recordings of his conversations with gop colleagues about his conversation with the former president before, during, and after january six. there's a lot that can be learned just about his knowledge about the former president's thinking about that time. another case that really sticks out is congressman biggs of arizona, he has been accused of being the mastermind behind the plan for trump's rally on the ellipse on january six. and the committee says that former white house staffers have identified him as one of several house

our story starts with allie raffa. when you're going to be will tell us about this letter, ali?> good morning katie. starting off with some background here. the january six committee chairman bennie thompson said to this week that a series of eight public hearings will begin on june 9th, which will reveal exactly what happened during the attack on the capitol. what went wrong during that attack. and he says that during a public hearing, it could be revealing some information that could be potentially impactful to several lawmakers here in capitol hill. and now he is saying that he wants to give those lawmakers a chance to tell their side of the story, about what they knew about events on january six, leading up to it and after. the president's thinking around that time. and because of this, he says that he will send requests for testimony to several gop lawmakers, in the house and the senate. quote, soon. but we are not exactly sure how close soon is. so, something we are looking out for here, some possibilities as to who could be called. house minority leader kevin mccarthy, wh
