allison williams covers the banks. it looks like everybody's feeling the freeze in the slowdown of fixed income. what stands out for you? >> it was worse than expectations. if you adjust for some one-time items, they are down 14%. that's better than the aggregate piers. it's a little bit better. the equity business is much more important. a little bit of underperformance if you look at the year-over-year growth. it's tough and make judgments based on one quarter and year-over-year. does one have a tough comparison or an easy comparison to bark it's important to look over the long-term. >> why does fixed income trading , other internal factors? is this a geopolitical thing going on? >> what we saw was no volatility. we have seen a pick up in volatility over the last couple of quarters. the best thing for trading is volatility with rising prices. we had the falling price of oil. that was not as important as widening credit. that is what hurts investment. >> everybody was saying we can't make any money, there is no volati

i want to bring in allison williams from "bloomberg intelligence." what part of the report stood out to you the most? >> for jpmorgan, they are focusing on the headline drop in fixed income trading. equities are up. the earnings are taking a backseat to what is happening in the markets today. >> everyone has been saying, fine, let banks look more like utilities. wells fargo does look more like a utility and we seem to like that. >> i don't think we should get -- >> oh look, we just started and he is arguing. >> if you look a jpmorgan's earnings, $28 billion for 2014. wells fargo, $23.1 billion. both of those banks are really raking it in big time. to make, the may be blips and they may be putting a lot of money aside for legal expenses and they have not smoothed out and gotten that behind them, but these are cash cows. >> it is hard to find anyone on the street on the sell side who agrees. anyone you speak to -- >> the could jamie dimon's investor letter last year. he said the same thing and he does not -- he is not wrong. >> we have a clip from his

this is bloomberg intelligence financial analyst allison williams. the big take away his what? >> wells fargo is still getting headlines here to the side revenues roughly in line. revenue holding up slightly better than expectations. >> there waiting for the interest of the fed. >> i have not found their number yet, but the interesting thing this morning is we have 30 year mortgage rates, lowest level since may of 2014. it is a good forward-looking indicator, which is what we care about with indicator spared the outlook for next quarter, next year, over the long-term. >> what about jpmorgan? you have got the same story of a fixed income trading slump. >> with jpmorgan, the headline number was largely due to legal expenses. i think you'll see this across that they will try to have as much of those expenses into f-14 as possible to get those behind them and move on to the cleaner 2015. >> will it be clear among all of the banks? >> i think we had something like 30 billion of costs last year. i think it will be tough to top that. if you think about what the legal expenses relate t

for more, let's bring in allison williams from bloomberg intelligence.not fair to do to you because you do not have the terminal right in front of you but what does that look like to you, $.47 earnings per share? is that the same story for the big banks across the street? >> $.40 is what i am seeing. keep in mind you want to ask out the valuation game, and there is probably a legal charge. we've seen that a several banks this quarter. for most of the banks what we have seen is the fixed income coming in weaker than expected. for morgan stanley, it is a unique commodities business. it seems to be a lot lumpy or in other companies. my guess is that is where i would be looking. >> there was a revision down in december after they said they were going to change compensation, be more in line with other finance companies. >> they came out and said they would be taking an extra caution in the quarter. we are seeing that i think come across now. the elevated compensation by $1.1 billion. they had said $1.2 billion. what they're doing is moving from i think they h
