alton sterling was shot and killed here. in the wake of that there were protests throughout this city. hundreds of protesters flooded the streets. nearly 200 getting arrested. at the time law enforcement was criticized for the time they handled that. they were told they were overly aggressive. they filed a lawsuit saying that some of the protesters first aem rights had been violated. at the same time during the week we learned four suspects broke into a pawnshop. they stole eight handguns. when the first was arrested he told officer it was their intent to shoot and kill across is this region. the past couple of days had been very calm here. alton sterling, his son came out with a plea for the public. he stayed very calm. he asked for everybody to not be violent if there was any demonstration. it has been a stark contrast. law enforcement has known there was a threat after dallas and the tragic loss of the police officers. law enforcement has known that there was a potential far situation to play out like this. shannon, the l

did you think alton was creating this situation? was he resisting? officers were taking it too far? what were you thinking that made you say it was going too far? >> the officers really took it, you know, a little too far. he was confused. he didn't know what was going on, why they were there. he asked them several times, what did i do wrong, what's going on, but they continued to slam him on top of the car and taser him. >> now, you turned the camera away, but we know you were watching the entire time. tell us what happened right before the shots were fired. >> right before the shots were fired, they were on top of him. they had him pinned down. one officer had one hand, the other officer had the other. >> so you believe they have him restrained. because there's this question of whether or not alton was going for his gun, and that's why the officers needed to shoot. your attorney is shaking his head that he doesn't believe that, but tell me, abdullah, why? >> i don't think he was going for his gun. there's no way he was. he was pinned down. he was o

i had an opportunity to speak at alton sterling's funeral.nded my speech with the need to listen on both sides. we have vulnerable communities in the city of baton rouge that have basically more vocal than lately mentioned how important it is that we have the necessary resources to ensure that the quality of lives of those specifically in the black communities are met. and then law enforcement officers who are not exactly familiar with those in the black community and there is no way to seem to forge a camaraderie, an understanding of these two communities. i think that the national news that we received with the killing of alton sterling got the attention of this kansas city shooter. and just last, you know, protesters and black lives matter movement persons came to the aid of the citizens to really cry for justice for alton sterling. we have individuals who may have mental health issues, or have some kind of vendetta against law enforcement, coming to our city and killing our law enforcement officers. >> we were guessing, theorizing it is -

alton sterling, philando castile. a problem when you look to the law as a protector and it comes into your community and shoots people dead with no remorse or consequences. it's a problem that you have someone law enforcement trying to do the right thing and others who bring shame on the badge. there are a lot of people i'm sure who echo those sentiments and some who would have problems with it. from your perspective, how do you at least beyond acknowledging the problem, start the conversation? >> i echo what she said. i mean, these type of events as a law enforcement officer, it's so hard for us. because these things happen and it's like oh, my gosh i still have to go to work. you know you'll take the backlash of someone else's mistake. we look at those individuals when they make the poor decisions, it's like gee thanks look at what we have to deal with because of what you did. there's so many of us out there that want to do good work. and we're here for the community and here to help people. that's what we signed up
