alyssa harrington has a look at this new pilot program. >> reporter: all aboard. for the first time in more than ten years, public ferry service has returned to berkeley. a private company called tide line launched its vessel from the berkeley marina and cruised into san francisco for its maiden voyage this morning. it dropped passengers at pier 1.5 and takes them back in the evening. >> there's no other ferry service here, and it's unbelievably close to take a ferry from here right into downtown san francisco. >> reporter: the ride takes about 25 minutes. it's a small vessel that only holds up to 40 passengers. larger ferries can hold 300 or 400. >> it's not as smooth as the big ferries, but it still gets up and goes like 15 knots, so it's just as fast. it's just a little rougher when the waves are big. >> reporter: passenger matt smith doesn't mind the choppy ride. >> b.a.r.t. is a cattle car. >> reporter: terry chen says he'd rather be on a ferry than a crowded b.a.r.t. train or stuck in gridlocked traffic. >> i work in the city. normally i drive, but traffic h
