the americas are a community. the america americas are a neighborhood. what affects one inevitably affects the others. last year, when a string of hurricanes flattened much of the caribbean, we in the u.s., we at usaid, we moved to assist. we assisted with supporting the displaced, helping the homeless, and launching projects to help affected communities find new livelihoods. a few months later, when hurricane maria struck the shovers puerto rico, colombia and mexico were among those who responded. mexico sent $100,000 in water and mosquito repellant. they sent six electrical experts to help assist the power grid needs on the islands. as one said to me at the time, that's what friends and neighbors do. indeed. especially in that hemisphere of freedom. thank you. [applause] >> thank you and congratulations. it is from my perspective refreshing to hear someone speak so forthrightly and with such great understanding and passion frankly about the polls in the hemisphere and i want to start or continue the conversation if i may. yesterday was the anniversary

america rising really covers it all. host: does opposition research include following candidates around with cameras, monitoring every statement they make, every media appearance they have? alex: it does. there is a caricature of opposition research, you can either go with the very sexy james bond type caricature, or you can think about it as dumpster diving, neither of which are true. really, the opposition research that we do is take all of the information that a public citizen -- an average citizen, could access and put together a narrative format. together in a narrative form. we use devices like the freedom of information requests, we follow candidates with cameras at public events to capture what they are saying, to see if it is different from what they have said on the record elsewhere. we are doing what any citizen could do, we are just doing it in a very organized and methodical way. host: let me turn to james homan of the "washington post." james: you are also doing a lot for 2020. how does your america rising

banner of america first as well. he said you know, the great thing about mccarthy was that he did to the american establishment what the new deal democrats had done to the business elite and wall street. he forever destroyed the american people's belief in their natural leadership. and this again stemmed from the battles before and leading up to world war ii itself. and even the talk we have nowadays about the political correctness in buckley's view went back to this. not just before the war, not just during the war, even after the war, any kind of revisionist scholarship was beyond the bounds of polite discourse, it was not allowed. harry elmer barnes was ostracized from the profession for resisting it. and buckley was a symbol of the liberal establishment's coercive conformity. buckley believed in coercive conformity, not just of the left, of the right. but as he saw it, the left would not admit that pearl harbor and everything leading up to pearl harbor was the foundational error of the entire subsequent post-war

america is a cause. america is about liberty. america is about justice. america is about universal human dignity. and even though john could often run over you when you were having a debate and argument if you were in his way, probably more than any person i've ever met, john actually believed in universal human dignity. the reason he was so big on the global stage is because he stood in the tradition of 230 years long announcing what america believes about 7.5 billion people that are created in god's image with universal dignity and that implies to everybody everywhere. it isn't america's job to fix every problem everywhere but it is part of america's mission in the world to proclaim that universal human dignity and that's what john did. that was a huge part of his calling. unfortunately we all know all too well that when the public looks at this institution right now, when the public looks to this city, they don't see a place that looks like it's beating heart is to proclaim that universal america idea, to proclaim that american sense that everybody is

let me talk for a second about young america's foundation. i have enormous respect for ron in the organization he has built. for the commitment to each and every one of you. young america's foundation was essential to helping me understand the basics of free-market economics. the basics of social conservativism. tell me become more grounded in my faith. that isn't something that's just a campus battle, it shapes my career in the way that frankly, we rose our family. it was an introduction to young america's foundation that has enriched my life and i hope it will for you as well. ron mentioned when i was a student, and undergraduate to help share how old i am. it was during the first gulf war. while there are many rallies on college campuses denouncing military engagement, or one of the first to have a rally to show support for our troops. - - it was a pow in vietnam was our keynote speaker. just going through the organizational skills of putting that together and having young america's foundation come alongside us. it was something the bush a
