. >>> we're back now to tell you about a computer glitch that's causing major problems for american airlines and that could mean major problems for holiday travelers booked on american. a system error apparently gave too many of the airline's pilots christmas break off, meaning there aren't enough pilots to fly all the airplanes. as nbc's miguel almaguer reports, he tells us what passengers need to know. >> reporter: the pilots union for american airlines says some 15,000 flights during the holidays now have no pilots. the union says a glitch in the scheduling system means millions of passengers may never get off the ground. >> frankly, it leaves passengers and our flight crews in limbo. we have a lot of pilots and flight crews who are depending on a reliable schedule just as our passengers certainly are. >> reporter: the scheduling error, according to the union, allowed pilots to take off one of the busiest flying times of the year, december 17th through the 31st. in a statement, american says we have reserve pilots to help cover flying in december. and we are paying pilots who pick up cert

american airlines says the flight was landing at mia from mexico city.nding the plane somehow hit that bird causing all this damage. it landed safely and got to the gate. american airlines releasing a statement saying the aircraft was taken out of service and our maintenance team is inspecting it. we showed this video to several experts. they were surprised by this one. bird strikes are way more common than you think. the faa released a study just last year, more than 160,000 bird strikes alone reported in the u.s. from 1990 to 2015. 62% of them occurred during the day, and a majority of bird strikes occurred during landing. >> kind of scary, but what can you do? >> reporter: for plane enthusiasts, it can be somewhat alarming. >> i have pictures of bird the next to planes flying as you're you don't see it until you get it home on the computer, and then it's like, ooh. >> reporter: authorities are now trying to figure out how this bird became wedged like that. >> that is a big bird. our thanks to andrew perez of our miami station. >>> when we come back, l
