craig melvin is traveling with her in amman, jordan this morning. craig, good morning to you. >> reporter: jeff rossen, [ speaking in foreign language ]. that is good morning in arabic, so i'm told. this is nikki haley's first trip overseas as u.n. ambassador, set to arrive here in amman, jordan in a few hours from now and from here will make her way to turkey. president trump to the eat of us in saudi arab eat of us in saudi arabia, conversations undoubtedly about how to end the six-year war in syria and the ambassador here in the middle east getting a firsthand look at the effects of that war. it was haley, of course, who really grabbed the world by the collar early last month when she held up those pictures of women and children who had been killed using chemical weapons in syria. some 7 million people have been killed since the war started. another 5 million are rep fugee. the ambassador will spend time in jordan touring one of those refugee camps along the syrian border, do the same in turkey along the syrian border, spend time in a refugee cam

cnn is monitoring the latest developments and we're joined live from amman, jordan.ood morning to you. is there reaction from turkey president erdogan as to what the president is doing here? >> reporter: well, we've heard from president erdogan, dave. he's very unhappy, says that turkey's upset to see the united states carrying out these patrols and says this is something he is going to address with president trump when they meet later this month in washington. what we basically are seeing is, as you mentioned, you have these u.s. special forces that are now patrolling the border region between syria and turkey, essentially creating a buffer zone. they're really trying to stop a breakout of an all-out conflict between these two u.s. allies. you've got on the one hand the ypg, that is the kurdish militia in northern syria that the united states considers its most reliable, most trusted ally when it comes to the fight against isis. and on the other hand, you have turkey, of course, a key u.s. ally, a fellow nato member state. and tensions between the two really spiked
