operating losses at amtrak. the gao and amtrak inspector general reports have consistently indicated that amtrak needs to initiate major reforms to improve service and operations. i think we all know that amtrak must address its long-distance routes and labor contracts if we want to reduce current operating costs. i think the can has been kicked down the road long enough. i hope today will be the start figuring out what steps are needed to be taken to reduce the size of losses. first in tracks the five largest revenue shortfalls stem from its long-distance routes. in fiscal year 2010 long distance routes lost close to $600 million. the worst performing routt had a 22% recovery rate. it's time to reevaluate our national strategy for long-distance routes and determine whether the routes are in the taxpayers' best interest.
