amtrak train8 was coming from washington d.c. and headed to new york city when it jumped tracks at the frankford junction sending 65 people to local hospitals, six of them in critical condition. but once again five people confirmed dead as a result. as you can imagine it was all hand on deck kind of an effort last night local state and federal authorities coming together and at one point we're told there were two hundred police officers here at the site. emergency vehicles flooded the scene transporting injured passengers, people treated for everything from concussion toss severe lacerations broken bones and even shock. the passengers on the ground before doing whatever they could to get a off that train. we have heard some account. we also spoke to an "eyewitness news" lives in port richmond. >> the railroad runs along next to that warehouse and there is a curve. it looks like the engine just kept going straight right off the curve right down the hill and all of the cars just followed with it and the engine was all the way over

broughted his one-year anniversary with amtrak amtrak.he seventh passenger car. that of course is the last passenger car and he reported having about 40 people in his car. up to the accident he reported no problems other than some radio problems, radio problems with his portable radio. he said sporadically he could hear but not sure that some of his transmissions were going out out. at the point that we're describing at the location of the accident, he said he felt shaking then two major impacts. he said interior seats disconnected and he attempted to contact the amtrak dispatch center but does not recall receiving a response. he assisted with the evacuation of engine passengers until he was instructed by emergency responders to go seek medical attention on his own. he said he had not worked much with the amtrak engineer for the accident trip, but he did say that he was happy with the engineer and described the engineer as being very professional. so what we've just described is the information that allowed us to delay the press conferenc

>> reporter: chris tracks behind me are now under amtrak control.tsb released them earlier when we heard earlier this week the train was going at 106 miles an hour many were in shock. now we're learning what led up to the moments of that large speed change. the result catastrophic. investigators continued to work around the clock to piece together an explanation of why the train was clocked at 106 miles per hour. >> we will be looking at acceleration and these are just -- the figures i just provided today are just snapshots. >> reporter: ntsb board member says the figures show 65 seconds before the crash the train exceeded 70 miles an hour. 31 seconds 90 miles per hour. 16 seconds before, it hit 100 miles per hour. authorities believe it peaked at 106 miles per hour but crashed at 102. that's an increase of 30 miles per hour in just 49 seconds. >> at this point of the investigation are you concerned about fatigue or distracted driving? >> we always look at distractions much we always look at potential for fatigue. >> never had his phone out. it didn

it is now at the amtrak headquartelaware. investigators are going to be bringing in more people from the ntsb in the days to come to try to figure out exactly what happened here. the mayor of philadelphia michael nutter held a news conference where he expressed concern that there were people from the d.c. area on board that train when it derailed last night. the train took off from union station after 7:00. we know 6 people have been confirmed dead and right now not everyone has been coted for. some 243 people on board that plane, more than 200 people treated at area hospitals but we don't know that everyone has been accounted for at this point. i want to give you an idea of what's happening where we are right now not far from the train derailment. if you look back here about 200 yards or so. we have seen a steady flow of heavy-duty equipment coming in to move the train cars that derailed here. you can see a bulldozer amtrak brought in a short time ago, there's a large crane brought in a little while ago as well. so the stead

amtrak today. they have no lobbying clout. the trucking industry runs over amtrak. they get no funding. they don't own and operate their own tracks so they travel on freight tracks and it's impossible to have maintenance integrity when you don't even control the lines. i would agree with all of these callers. the caller from texas and the caller from florida, our national railroad system is a travesty and the reason privatization probably would not be effective outside because they would eliminate all other routes around the nation. what we need is to get away from long haul trucking which destroys our highways and makes driving anywhere very unpleasant and move towards both intense passenger rail upgrades and modernization and expansion to capture the million len yell march at the time. we have a beautiful country and the best way to see is it by train. greta: let me ask you about this part of "new york times" this morning. congressman john mica, republican of florida he's been pushing amtrak and

five of whom were amtrak employees. parts of amtrak regional 188 are on their sides. the video is quite starting when you look at it. one is upside down. one nearly split in half with large sections of track just mangled underneath. the train was traveling north from washington, d.c. the ntsb has been activated and is investigating. now here's what we're still trying to figure out. there is a lot of questions right now. officials are not speculating on what could have caused the derailment. when it all happened at 9:20 p.m. eastern time it was very dark outside. no natural light and very few lights on the track. now rescuers were initially just using flashlights. can you imagine this kind of derailment? they're using flashlights to try to find people and rescue them before asking helicopters overhead to shine their lights just to brighten things up enough to search the area effectively. i understand on the phone we may be able to get a little more from someone on the scene. we have msnbc's adam reiss on the phone with us. adam, can you tell me what you're seeing right

what is amtraks' safety record. >> first we should report that amtraks has record ridership and it's gone up phenom nailly over the years. and as a whole it has good record numbers. derailments crashes at crossings where they run into cars and trucks that sometimes try to beat the train. but it is not that common to lose your life on an amtrak train. this is the deadliest amtrak accident since 1999 when 11 people died in a crash in illinois. >> this is getting a lot of attention, as if should, on capitol hill right now. we're hearing railroad fund something under way. what do we expect in that hearing? >> well, you know, amtrak has long had to go hat in hand to capitol hill. it does not have the support that it pants from the government. it's always asking for more money. and many people are capitol hill are loathe to give amtrak the money. some republicans want to privatize amtrak and take it off off the government dole entirely. the accident was mentioned at this hearing on capitol hill, and peter di it wasio, from oregon organize, the rangering tells on infrastructure committee, h
