the president is known to be a big fan of amtrak and so there is a big investment in passenger rail,or oklahoma city, it promises to connect us north to kansas, which opens the northern united states for us and the whole amtrak system. those are some of the things. all of this is hopefully stuff, programs we can tap into, whether it is fraud band or water infrastructure, so on. judy: even people who like this essay it may take time to roll this out. how long will people have to wait to see tangible benefits from this legislation? mayor whaley: it is a long-term plan, it is not a year infrastructure plan, it is over years. but we will see movement think in the first of next year and some road dollars being moved pretty quickly. really through what we call metropolitan planning organizations. there are many projects in dayton and communities across the country already on a list, they just could not get the funding to get it done. now the funding will be there to rebuild roads, to make sure we can start doing real broadband in our communities. you will see smaller projects at the beginn

our members include bus operators, flight attendants, airport gate agents, amtrak workers, bike share workers and many other classes of transportation. across airlines, transit, and railroads, frontline workers overwhelmingly believe the number one security threat in our transport systems today is physical assault in the performance of their duty. the faa has reported more than 5,000 unruly passenger incidents since the beginning of the year. a 2,000% increase over the previous year. while these assaults have received most of the media attention, assaults against transit and amtrak workers are also on the rise. in new york city alone, there have been nearly 2,000 assaults on transit workers this year, and amtrak workers have seen assaults rise by 25% over a period of time when ridership dropped by 60%. these numbers are terrifying. but the reality for frontline workers is so much more. a southwest airlines gate agent was pelted with objects before a passenger violatantly pulled her hair and threw her to the ground that she was hospitalized with a spine energy, and this past weekend, a

so i think it is good that the infrastructure game plan has dedicated funding for amtrak where publicng is really needed. of course, we would love to see a continued emphasis on our public-private partnerships with some of our local communities when it comes to separating roads from railroads. some of the money in the infrastructure plan can be used for that. guy: i bring this up because this is argument that europe has a lower inflation rate at the moment, having to deal with less with issues you've described, because it has a larger, more integrated railway system that, as you say, both deals with passengers and freight. does that argument fly, do you think? lance: i don't think so. the u.s. freight railroad system his the envy of the world. we ship a ton of freight at a lower cost in absolute terms than anywhere else in the world, and we do it efficiently and reliably. so i don't think it is because some other country or some other region has a better freight rail network. i think the reason we are seeing more inflation in the united states than in europe is that we are growing fas
