that's when an oakland police sergeant responding to a call crashed her car near 73rd and wells street. police say as she sat injured in her car, a man came up and fired a gunshot toward the sergeant. luckily missing her then he ran away. the sergeant radioed for help. >> caller: i'm stuck in the car. i don't know where he went. >> we're on high alert across the country. we're aware and vigilant every day we come out here to the job. >> reporter: a search across 10 blocks but dozens of officers and a police helicopter did not turn up the suspect. since the gunman opened fire on police in dallas on july 7th, killing five and injuring nine others, oakland police and others have doubled up two to a car except for sergeant. the name of the sergeant not being released. she was released from high land hospital yesterday. >>> chuck, thank you very much. we give you the latest developments out of monterey county where the sober ran necessary fire destroyed six homes and more than 1600 are in the fire's pathway. so far 11,000 acres have been burned, and the fire, as a whole, is only 5% containe

she will have more with new information for you coming up at 7:00. >>> in oakland, placer at the scene of an early-morning homicide near interstate 5 80 and the emeryville border. alex savidge arrived a little while ago. you are with us now. what do you know? >> reporter: good morning. we know that oakland police are searching for the shooter who opened fire on a man near this gas station early this morning. this is not far from the emeryville border. we are the intersection of san pablo. you can see the area blocked off. police had a shotspotter activation around 4 am. they came out to the scene and found this man who had been shot several times. he was found dead in the middle of the street, next to this station. the victim appears to be a man in his 30s. other than that, police are not sure of his identity. they are also working with the manager of this gas station to pull some of the surveillance video. is the cameras out front. those cameras could play a key role in tracking down the shooter. a short time ago we spoke with the sergeant at the scene about what some of the next steps are

that looks like an on-ramp. >> a perspective on all these are tests fairly uniform up until now. that includes oakland it's an incredibly mixed and diverse group of people coming together. perhaps under the banner of black lives of matter but as the president said, to lies, white lives, blue lights, it all has to stop. we have to do this in a fashion that does not result in the deaths of like people consistently. >> officers dealing with this in oakland understand tensions are high across the country. i'm sure all the departments where they are dealing with protests this evening, tensions are high that people are frustrated and angry. the point that the video shows clearly, people being shot by police, many css needed as we heard the girlfriend of the victim in minnesota say use the word assassination. officers it so troubling. yesterday were san francisco police were facing a situation that could have escalated but did not. they waited and waited until the suspect involved who had a gun at the time finally gave way and that ended peacefully. we hope other protests across the country continue to do th
