the government has launched an offensive to try to retake anbar. >> we go live to baghdad. what more do we know? > the offensive has gone on for 48 hours. a number of troops entered the anbar province, and are taking towns and villages surrounding the two pain cities. we have seen this as an iraqi security force tactic. before they go into a maker city where i.s.i.l. occupied, they take over towns and villages on the outskirts, using them as sage are staging posts of the one of these has been taken in the last 12 hours, it's 20km south of ramadi. they are moving the pieces into place. whilst this is going on, we are seeing an increase in coalition air streak, and u.s.-led air strikes in the last 7-8 hours take place on the outskirts of fallujah. that's been some 27 air strikes targetting 67 positions. it's the most air strikes that we have seen certainly around fallujah. looks like they are gearing up to take back the two main opportunities. if they do that it gives them the anbar province and that's the operation they are looking for to announce they have retaken anbar. >>

that seems to be what is happening in anbar.re is some of the fiercest fighting in that province but it's largely out of sight of everyone, that too, is part of the problem. >> i appreciate it must be difficult to get information out of areas like this because i.s.i.l. is so entrenched and it's dangerous for supporters to go in there. how sure are we about what is going on? >> well that is a key question and it's more important than ever to get as many sources of information as possible in reports such as this. we get reports every day about air strikes, and reach out to as many people as possible. the problem here is that this is also a war of publicity, and propaganda if you will. the iraqi government is fighting hard in anbar. it's not forthcoming with information. it's a difficult rear to get to impossible in some respects. we have been in the last few days to fallujah 20km from fallujah, it's as far as you can go. after that there's few sources of information because the internet is difficult to actions, difficult to get vi

the operation against them in anbar province began monday at 5:00 a.m., using coalition air strikes, putting them under a tremendous amount of pressure saying this will be the operation that will be liberate anbar province. under a tremendous amount of pressure in anbar province that we still have the capability of attacking you. like you say iraqis were expecting an attack like this. the size of this attack though will concern many. this was a crowded marketplace it was a place where people would have been out to celebrate the end of ramadan to celebrate eid, to go and buy food, to celebrate the time with their families. it was a key time for i.s.i.l. what iraqis have to think of now is how much is the fight worth to keep fighting and putting under pressure in anbar province knowing there is a historic precedent for this, of being able to mount attacks elsewhere. this is a very tough fight for iraqis and they were expecting this but the size of there attack will shock a lot of people. >> syrian kurdish fighters say they were the subject of a gas attack by islamic state of iraq and t

and here is ramadi, the provincial capital of anbar. something like this first they say you have to fix the i.s.i.l. force necessary fallujah. they can't send forces to ramadi or worse attack iraqi forces from the rear as they advance from the east. fix is a standard military tactic, simply means engaging the opposing force so they can't maneuver against you. under that plan that operation will be carried out primarily by the pmf ostensibly under the iraqi government with links to iran. be over the past few days between 6,000 and 8,000 iraqi forces have been preparing for the maim assault of ramadi. moving some to the south to set up block forces here to here, that's to stop i.s.i.l. from running away to fight another day. as chairman of the joint chiefs put it, squirting like toothpaste somewhere else. supported by a heavy bombing campaign, the last 24 hours 29 strikes have hit five i.s.i.l. positions in and around ramadi. while the u.s. planned and is backing the operation its success is not a sure thing. this is tough urban combat. a
