anderson, you spent quality time with this guy.he impression that he had at least early stages of dementia? >> look, i think in order to judge that sort of thing, you actually have to know a person for a long time, know what they were like ten years ago, to what they are now. i can certainly say i had no concerns about his state of mind doing this interview. this was somebody who i felt had dementia, i would not have done this interview, nor would we put it on television. donald sterling is clearly an accomplished attorney. knows his way around the courtroom. he came into the interview knowing what he wanted to say. and also being willing to answer just about any question that i put to him. you know, it was a contentious interview at times, emotional interview at times. we talked for well over an hour. he answered all the questions that i put to him. so he's certainly, you know, sees his situation. he's aware of the situation he's in. it's a situation the likes of which he has never been in before. he's certainly been in hot water

anderson?, kyung, the memorial that is happening now, i mean, we've seen literally thousands of people attending this. any idea on the total number? i know that christopher's father spoke at the memorial just a short time ago. >> reporter: he did speak at the memorial and a lot of people came here to see him. and when we look at the faces of the people who came into the stadium it is like the entire town came here. many of them young. we're talking about young victims, a community of students. two schools affected. a city college and the university of california, santa barbara. and there are mainly students, but there are also all sorts of ages because this is a college town filled with professors, students, they are here. this entire place is packed. the police here are telling us there are 20,000 people who have filled this stadium. the capacity is technically 17,000. people are filling the entire area and around this stadium, anderson. >> kyung lah, appreciate the upgrade, as she mentioned,

i asked anderson cooper why do you think he sat down to talk with you and what could he say anderson wanted to apologize. he seemed sincere but he keeps bringing up magic johnson and it's really strange. >> it's a bizarre thing. on one hand he seems sincere. i suspect if you were to hook him to a polygraph machine and ask if he was racist, it would turn out he's not lying. he sees himself as an ordinary person operating within the confines of the culture. the problem is his behavior betrays his words. we can go back to the '80s and '90s and into the 2000s and every decade a major race based crisis around donald sterling's life and career. that's a big issue here. donald sterling sees a disconnect between what he says and does. the court of public opinion doesn't agree with him and every day people don't agree with that sentiment. he's pained right now. he's embarrassed. he's ashamed. i also think it's difficult for him to separate that feeling he has right now from the broader sense of feelings he has about brown people and others. >> shelly sterling says that her husband is sufferin
