our andrea canning has more. >> reporter: the same weekend philip markoff was found dead in his cell. he should have been celebrating his one-year wedding anniversary. the last year his fiancee called off the engagement after discovering he was the alleged craigslist killer. >> i ask that the defendant be held without bail. >> reporter: the markoff trial was in less than eight months. but police sources say he took his own life sunday by cutting himself repeatedly with a jail-issued razor and suffocating himself with a trash back from his track cash. >> he would not be the kind of person who could face the music. he would be embarrassed and humiliated during the trial. >> reporter: the med student was accused of killing julissa brisman in 2009. last year, he used his shoe laces to try and hang himself and then tried suicide again by running a serrated spoon over his wrist. markoff maintained his innocence until the end. a spokesperson for the family of julissa brisman released a statement saying "the long-awaited criminal prosecution was their only opportunity to confront him and now
