andrea mitchell, with me. luke russert with me from the white house. e president will speak about this in a short period of time. we are seeing the leaders meeting in geneva. andrea, that is the headline. bring us the headlines. >> this was brokered and agreed to 3:00 geneva time, 9:00 eastern standard time. the deal is to freeze iran's nuclear program in place but not to force iran to destroy its advanced -- that is one of the reasons why there's a lot of democratic opposition to this on the hill as well as israeli, saudi persian golf opposition to it. iran will be able to, six months from now, could potentially breakout and create something that would approach a nuclear weapon. iran would have to stop construction on a separate plutonium reactor. they would get some sanction relief, $3.5 billion of their own assets that have been frozen. some additional gradual release over six months. the u.n. atomic agency would control and patrol the deal. again, the criticism will be that iran will have the nuclear equipment and could build up very quickly, if it

i'm andrea mitchell in washington. relief supplies are slowly trickling into the philippines today including more aid from the united states that could arrive by tomorrow. the official death toll is now more than 1700 and likely to soar much higher. typhoon haiyan wreaked havoc on the island nation friday displacing an estimated 660,000 people. nbc's ian williams joins me now with the latest from manila. ian, i know it's a slow process getting aid but what is the latest? >> reporter: hello, andrea. that's right. aid or offers of aid throughout the world are pouring into the philippines but the aid itself is trickling in painfully slowly. there have been a lot of desperate people in those areas saying the things they need most, the water, shelter, medical aid simply isn't arriving. that was recognized today by the presidential palace where a spokesman said he blamed the sheer scale of the devastation for the slow pace which the aid is -- he said airports and roads were gradually being cleared which will help that effort

i'm andrea mitchell in washington. glad to be back with all of you. survivors in the philippines are picking through wreckage today just days after typhoon haiyan swept through the philippines destroying entire cities in its path. the storm came ashore early saturday morning as a category 5 typhoon, one of the strongest ever to make landfall. the military says 1,000 people are dead, confirmed dead, with officials estimating thousands more. three days after the storm, aid workers and military officials say they still have not been in contact or able to access some of the hardest-hit areas. nbc's ian williams joins me now live with the latest from manual ark. ian, it is almost -- it is incomprehensible. what is happening in terms of relief and how is the u.s. playing a role here? >> well, andrea, the relief effort is now getting under way but they face enormous logistical challenges. the head of the red cross described the situation down there as absolute bedlam. in tacloban aid is beginning to get in. some of it brought in by u.s. marines. the u.s. mil

i'm andrea mitchell in washington. we begin with this breaking news from the supreme court. the justices have now decided to take up a key piece of the president's health care law and make a major ruling potentially about how religious beliefs can shape the way a business operates. let's bring in nbc justice correspondent pete williams. tell me about the case that they've taken up and what the focus of their review now will be, pete? >> reporter: the focus will be a simple question, does a for-profit company have religious freedom and, if so, can it refuse to follow the contraceptive part of the obama care, that says private insurance can companies must be provided that pays 100% of their contraceptive services. the court has agreed to take two cases, one involving a nationwide chain of arts and crafts stores called the hobby lobby owned by a religious family in oklahoma. they say requiring them to pr provide this contraceptive care for four types of contraception would amount to abortion, in their view, and violate their religious freedom. the second case is one from a e me

we want a little more perspective from andrea mitchell, our chief foreign affairs correspondent. good morning to you. as ann pointed out, there are vast implications here. how significant is the agreement? >> it could be enormous. picking up on what ann just said, this initial agreement could well be the first step toward a landmark accord that would change the global landscape, change the entire region and the world, not only on the nuclear front, but eventually returning iran for the first time since 1979, the community of nations. this would affect syria and the other neighbors as well. that is still a big if. there are disagreements today, erica, over what was agreed to. iran's president and russia's foreign minister both said the accord ratifies iran's right to enrich uranium. the white house says adamantly it did not. the truth is the final deal left that ambiguous. while this all came together very, very quickly, white house officials did confirm early this morning that top officials from the u.s. have been talking secretly to iran. dechity secretary of state, in fact, for
