i'm andrea mitchell in washington for a special two-hour edition of "andrea mitchell reports" today. the july 4th holiday marking another day of deadly mass shootings across our country. five people were shot in boston with nonlife threatening injuries. in shreveport, louisiana, three people were killed and six others were injured last night. and here in the nation's capitol, two separate mass shootings left four people dead and 12 others injured. just after midnight this morning in salisbury, maryland, seven people were shot including a 14-year-old who was fatally wounded. in fort worth, texas, authorities say three people were killed and eight others injured monday night. and in philadelphia, the suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of five people made his first appearance in court this morning. joining us now are nbc's george solis in philadelphia, and jim cavanaugh retired special agent in charge of hostage negotiator for the atf and msnbc contributor. george solis, what have we learned from this morning's arraignment if anything about the suspect? we knew very little about him

i'm andrea mitchell in washington. we begin our second hour of "andrea mitchell reports" with the gun violence epidemic in our country. according to the gun violence archive, there were 17 mass shootings in 15 states over the long july 4th weekend. leaving 18 people dead and more than 100 others injured. it brings the annual tally to 351 this year on track to surpass previous records. right now in el paso, texas, sentencing is underway in one of the deadliest mass shootings in u.s. history, the 2019 walmart shooting, where the shooter pleaded guilty to federal murder and hate crime charges for targeting hispanic migrants. family members of his 23 victims are making impact statements in court later today. the gunman is likely to be sentenced to 90 consecutive life sentences. in philadelphia, a 40-year-old man has been charged with five counts of murder after allegedly opening fire while walking through southwest philadelphia. witnesses recall the shooter was wearing a ski mask and bulletproof vest as he fired at random.

i'm andrea mitchell in washington. grand jury investigating efforts to overturn the 2020 election is expected to meet again today. could potentially hand up the most serious indictment to date against former president trump. members of the special counsel's office have spoken with former acting attorney general richard donoghue, a key witness to the congressional january 6 committee, about alleged election interference in the final days of the trump white house. former new york police commissioner bernie kerik, a top giuliani associate in 2020, who was imprisoned for four years on corruption charges, has turned over thousands of pages of documents to jack smith. laura jarrett joins me now. what should we make of these developments from the special counsel's office? one week after mr. trump received that target letter. jack smith prosecutors are interviewing people. that does not rule out that they could come down with an indictment or present it to the grand jury. >> right. for folks trying to follow the twists and tur
