these republicans could vote for a different republican, andy biggs from arizona put his name forward. a republican could vote for bob smith, pick any name out of a hat. the problem for mccarthy is the balance right now is there's 222 republican members elect, 212 democrats. this one vacant seat, a democrat who passed away after the election and before today. that means if all republicans, all democrats do cast votes here in the next hour, we expect, there will be 434 total votes. you need 50% plus one. a majority. in this scenario, it's 218. that would be what mccarthy needs on this first ballot. if you need 218 and you are kevin mccarthy, you have already got these five republicans who for weeks now have been adamantly saying they are no. if they vote and they vote for somebody besides mccarthy, if they voted for biggs let's say, then mccarthy best case is at 217. then if every democrat is voting, we said the magic number in that scenario is 218. these are the five most obvious. there are other republicans, including within the last hour, who sent signals they seem likely to vote no
