angie goff is in the newsroom now, and angie, this is nothing short of a miracle story. >> yes, a miracle that, aaron. good morning. petra anderson was back home in aurora to take care of her sick mom. she was struck by four gunshot shells. one hit her face. ♪ on her website, the 22-year-old musician shares her work. petra is supposed to attend umd's school of music this fall. it's unclear if that will now happen. in a compelling blog post, her pastor describes what he calls a miracle birth defect that saved her life. one shot hit her nose and traveled by fluid, not tissue, which is normally what is there. the pellet traveled through her brain to the back of her skull, and amazingly, did not cause any major damage. right now, petra is in the hospital recovering as supporters rally. so far, this website set up by friends has raised more than $80,000 for petra and her mom, who is in the final stages of terminal cancer. we posted a link to this website on our "news4 today" facebook page. now, this morning, petra's condition does look promising. according to her pastor, there is a small hole

i'm angie goff. >> good morning. i'm aaron gilchrist.elcome back to "news4 today" on this wednesday, july 18th. and this morning the extreme heat continues to be the big story this month. today we could hit our sixth day of triple digit temperatures this july. the heat left the national mall deserted last night. much of our area will be under a heat advisory today. a lot of pools in the district staying hope late this evening to help residents cool off and trash will be picked up early today to avoid some of the extreme heat. >> possibly triple digits again. >> dress like your going to a pool party. having highs reach near 100. pleasant, all of these areas in yellow in the 70s that include most of virginia, west virginia, and maryland. near 80 by the bay in the tidal potomac. we do have a weak front that's moving across michigan now but it's going to strengthen as it gets closer to us later today as a result. all of these areas in yellow under a risk for severe storms that includes the washington metro area, points west, north, and east.

we want to go right to angie goff. she talked to the u.s.ey. >> the usgs survey confirms a magnitude 2.4 earthquake hit louisa county overnight around 12:43 a.m. act six miles southeast of mineral, virginia. some people in the towns of louisa reported they felt the rumble from inside their homes. this quake was just 4 1/2 miles east of the epicenter of last year's powerful quake. you might remember a 5.8 quake struck mineral on august 23rd, 2011. the town is about 80 miles from d.c. but it rattled millions along the east coast. heavily damaged louisa county schools, as you can see. and the washington monument is still closed to this day due to the repairs it is currently undergoing. fortunately this morning a different story. as of now we have no reports of injuries or damage following the 2.4 quake. >>> big nights in the pool, but today could be the biggest. michael phelps could become the most decorated olympian in history by medaling in two rices. first he'll look for the third straight gold in the butterfly, his specialty. then he could

i'm angie goff in for barbara harrison. it is monday, july 9th, 2012. we begin with a developing story in northern virginia, a community in fredericksburg is cleaning up from yet another round of severe summer storms. yesterday's strong wind practically flattened a number of businesses. emergency crews rushed four people, including children to the hospital. "news 4's" melissa malay has the story. >> reporter: this build behind me is almost completely gone. cars smashed in the parking lot next door, debris everywhere. looking at the damage, it's amazing to think no one was hurt. the storm came from the northwest, barreling across jefferson davis highway, first slamming into this strip mall of the salon, ma tris stories. insulation torn from the wall, the roof gone. you can see the pile of debris inside this is a lon. the wind peeled back a portion of the roof, lifting it off smashing into the suv of the owner in the back alley. he owns a car lot across. it crashed into cheer fusion, blowing away most of the cinder blocks here. the 20 children and their p

news 4's angie goff is live with more. >> good morning to you, yoourn. hours away from hearing the formal charges against james holmes for the first time. the 24-year-old will be charged on the shooting spree that killed a dozen people and jirpd 58 others. holmes will likely face 12 counteds of first degree murder and numerous attempted first degree murder counts. the district attorney says her office is still months away on deciding whether to seek the death penalty. she wants input from victims and their families. at its first court appearance last week, holmes appeared out of it, very dazed and confused. legal experts say an insanity defense seems probable. as for details of the case, things have been airtight. but at today's hearing a chance for new information to emerge. holmes' lawyers are expected to ask that a notebook he sent to his psychiatrist before the shootings be turned over to the defense. the debate, whether that notebook, that reportedly details holmes' plan can be used in court as evidence. also expected, several media outlets will ask
