he went to annapolis with 113 marines. he returned from annapolis with 113 marines. the marines were proving themselves to be the foot warriors of the campaign. he would send tenders up to severn to replace buoys that people had pulled up, so the british could not navigate. sent parties to get water and made a big show of possibly invading kent island. remember, his mission was to remove pressure, not to take and hold anything. when you look at his letters, you can see where he really did get a charge out of scaring the dickens out of the local politician. he thought it was a hoot. and the royal marines got really good at it. these men became dubbed by the local press as it "the water winnebagos." the winnebagos were a tribe in michigan that harried the americans for years and years and were extremely adept with their canoes. here you have the royal marines with a couple sailors and their rowboats -- and these both might have been 35 to 40 feet long -- and these men would show up just about anywhere and they did. every creek, every little river, every brook. what the

if anyone has been to annapolis, the u.s. naval academy today at one time was for seven --fort --ern, a large missionary mason harry ford. there were 26 guns were so in the fort. i don't want to say they were mounted because only the barrels were in the fort. there were no gun platforms. there were no parapets. there was no magazine, no ammunition, no one to man the guns, but they did have -- no carriages either. they at least have the gun barrels. across the severn you have the three radio towers, that is where for madison stood. both of which commanded that area of the chesapeake and also the severn river. madison was in even worse shape. local militia, about 80 strong, had thrown up before -- the fort at the end of chesapeake avenue. it's right down the road from my house. they did not have any cannons. all they had were 80 militiamen who according to various sources maybe had 20 muskets between them. i don't know what the other guys are doing. maybe they were the cheerleading squad. the defenses of annapolis were not very
