i'm anne-marie green. well, this morning, the federal government is shut down for the first time in 17 years. the republican-led house and democrats in the senate were unable to agree on a deal to keep the government funded. no one gave ground as the contentious battle over president obama's health care law continued to the bitter end. an estimated 800,000 federal workers will be furloughed. among them nearly 3,000 faa safety inspectors. most routine food inspections by the fda will be suspended and the national park system will close its doors. susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> anne-marie, good morning, the president says he will push congress to reopen as soon as possible but when that happens is anybody's guess. for now, the gridlock this morning will continue here on capitol hill, as hundreds of thousands of federal workers find out that at least for now they're out of work. >> mr. speaker, it is now midnight, and the great government of the united states is now closed. >> report

i'm anne-marie green. well, the fbi has searched the connecticut home of a woman who led police on a wild and ultimately deadly chase through the heart of the nation's capitol. it all started when the woman identified as miriam carey rammed security barriers at the white house with her car. cbs news has learned that carey was fired from her job as a dental hygienist last year after a dispute over a handicap spa parking spot. >> anne-marie, good morning. police are going spend today trying to figure out why miriam carey came here from stamford, connecticut, tried to break the perimeter at the white house, then came to the capitol before she was shot by the police, shot dead, and leaving two officers injured. investigators wearing hazmat suits searched the stamford, connecticut, of the home of a woman police were involved in car chase with through washington, d.c. >> police were there to go through that and try to find out what was this. could they learn from her computer or notes or anything else, something
