let's start with nbc's antonia hylton live in lewiston, maine. antonia, again, we are expecting this news conference to begin any moment. we'll break as soon as they begin. what do we know right now about where police are focusing their manhunt this hour? >> reporter: well, this has really become a multistate effort, and of course federal partners with the fbi and atf with also on the ground. we don't know the exact perimeters, but our understanding is that all options are on the table here. they executed search warrants last night in bowdoin, maine, right down the road where the card family owns some properties. a lot of people saw footage from that, at first they thought perhaps -- locals thought maybe they had found robert card, they did not. but what we know is they are also considering the possibility that he may have left maine. you know, for example, the car that was found was left by the water. we know that he owned a boat that is missing, and so authorities are searching everywhere, and that's part of why, you know, this county and surrou

antonia hylton joins us from lewiston.er in place order means as we were discussing people can't come together. i don't know if they can have a church service. >> reporter: that's right. some of the residents who i have spent time talking to have been venturing out all on their own. they say that they feel like they are taking a risk. they know their loved ones, their family, they are at home. what we heard is at night people are turning their lights out, locking up cars and barns, which may sound routine. but this is the kind of community where people didn't lock their front door. they knew everyone. they have grown up here. the kids are going to schools they went to. i spent time talking to one businessowner and life-long resident who lost multiple friends and is also friends with one of the people who is in critical care right now in the facility behind me here. he was standin outside the facility waiting for permission to come visit friend at some poin we believe he is down there actually doing that at the moment. list

joining us now nbc news correspondent antonia hylton in new york. good morning.ting for senator bob menendez to get here to court in manhattan around 3:00 p.m. where we expect him to plead not guilty to these additional charges. prosecutors allege that he sent sensitive u.s. government secrets and information to egyptian actors and he also essentially acted as a foreign agent on their behalf, which of course would be illegal. not only is he a sitting senator but he was also the chair of the senate foreign relations committee. so that's caused outrage not just among his colleagues, but also among his constituents in new jersey, many who have been calling for him to resign. he has been defiant in the midst of those calls and has insisted that he is innocent and going to prove so when trial comes later this spring. but as you mentioned it piles on top of these other charges where essentially prosecutors had argued and laid out photographs of cash and gold bars and alleged expensive exercise equipment, mor payments that they say he traded in favors for, not just with

. >> i want to bring in nbc's antonia hylton who is on the ground in lewiston, and nbc news intelligence and justice correspondent, ken dilanian. this has been called an all hands on deck approach to find this suspect, robert card. no surprise there. but what more do we know about him, and what details do we have about what's being done to find him? >> chris, a senior law enforcement official just told nbc news that tips and sightings are pouring in but none of them have been deemed credible as of yet. the u.s. marshals have their main regional task force deployed to try to help state and local officials hunt for this suspect, robert card. the fbi has a host of teams deployed including one devoted to exploiting social media, and another that specializes in behavioral analysis. federal officials are looking for electronic signals that could potentially point to where this person could be. they're canvassing the area. they are working as hard as they possibly could. in terms of the suspect, we are learning that he purchased an assault style rifle legally this ye, and one of the biggest que

antonia hylton, tom winter, thank you. let's bring in nbc news correspondent ehema ellis, also in lewiston. we've heard the number of victims. we have the gender of the victims. we don't know much more other than what we've heard from people like leroy walker. can you tell us what you have learned? >> reporter: well, what we're hearing is that we're not hearing a lot. and that's causing some frustration on the part of people because i can't underline more what antonia was saying, people know people. this bowling alley that's behind me, just about an eighth of a mile down the road is someplace that everybody around here knows. they visited, they come here with their children. they want to know why aren't medical authorities telling them what happened, can you identify who these people are. listen to what one of the doctors said earlier today on a news conference expressing some of the frustration people have about this. >> one of the challenges with identifying patients early on was the speed with which our team needed to a

let's begin this hour with nbc news correspondent antonia hylton who is live from lewiston, maine, also with us, frank figliuzzi, the former assistant director for counterintelligence at the fbi, also msnbc national security analyst. so, antonia, we had this update from officials. bring us up to speed on this investigation, what more do we know? >> reporter: well, ana, first we heard from governor janet mills, that we have confirmed 18 people were killed, 13 others injured and are receiving medical care at facilities like the one behind me here. and as you just laid out, this massive manhunt is still under way here in lewiston and lisbon and bowdoin. there is still a shelter in place order. it is a bit of a ghost town in this area. people are staying home, not going to school, not going to work, not going out and patronizing businesses, but actually even beyond that shelter in place order we're hearing that schools and areas as far away as 45 minutes in portland are closing because so many people were connected to folks here. this is a very tight knit community. so you can really only j

i want to bring in antonia hylton on the ground in lewiston, msnbc legal analyst, joyce vance, nbc news investigative correspondent, tom winter is here, and former assistant director for counterintelligence at the fbi and an msnbc national security analyst frank figliuzzi. what do we know at this hour? >> i think they're looking at a couple of different things, first off trying to determine if there's any sort of body that they can find that's next to that car that you referenced. that's the last known location he was at. i think they're also going to look at any sort of cell phone history to try to determine where he was traveling after the attack. one of the concerns here is that from a cell site tower issue in new york city, for instance, you could be extremely precise because there's so many cell phone towers to try to determine where somebody's located is much easier. the more rural you get in an area, that can be a little bit more of a challenge. they continue to search along the river to make sure it's a national geographic barrier. you try to make sure the individuals not along

. >> i want to bring in nbc's antonia hylton who is in lewiston, also with me, tom winter and former fbi specialist and national security analyst clint watts. and i know you have some new information, tom, on the firearm that was used but what else are you learning from law enforcement right now? >> i think dps making it clear they don't know where this individual is at this point. they are tracking down a number of leads. they have gone over all sorts of details abouthis person's background, specificay locations and so they're kind of ticking things off in a kind of a methodical manner at this point. to your point, some information about the gun that we've just been able to confirm with my colleague jonathan dienst e, the weapon was purchased legally earlier this year and all indication it was before that mental health incident that you referenced here just a few seconds ago. there's no indication at this point, though, i really caution that these type of reviews take time, there's no indication that there was a law or a step that was missed as it stands on the books in maine that w

joining me now, antonia hylton in lewiston, tom winter, former atf hostage negotiator and special agent in charge jim kavanaugh and frank figliuzzi. antonia, tell us more. the officials deeply affected by the horror in their small community. how much of the area is on lockdown? >> reporter: andrea, the horror is the only word to describe it here. we are learning more about the investigation, the manhunt underway. they are looking for robert card. he moved from being a person of interest to fully being a suspect. as you mentioned, there are now these eight counts of homicide likely to go up to 18. that's the number the governor confirmed of people were killed as a result of all of this, between the multiple sites of the shootings last night. we are learning more about what happened, what's transpired in recent hours at the medical center behind me. a doctor just spoke out describing some of the scene here, how it has been an around the clock effort to save lives, how people arrived here just within minutes. three people died here at this site. three others are in critical condition. othe
