i was in the courtroom with ariel castro from the beginning. at that time he had his head down, he wouldn't say anything to the judge, wouldn't make eye contact with anyone. he just looked really ashamed. then today it was like he was a different person. it was in stark contrast to how he was before. he was looking around, leaping back in his share, even interrupting the judge. of course, we heard his bizarre rambling speech. so there were two sides of him it seemed. but there were some poignant moments that struck me. it was powerful to see michelle knight's steely resolve. if you asked me who i would have thought would have testified today, i wouldn't have said michelle knight from the beginning. she has the toughest recovery but yet today she faced her tormenter head on and she stayed there at the sentencing through the end of it. the family representatives for the other two victims left the courtroom, but michelle knight stayed there as ariel castro attempted to apologize and justify his behavior. so it was incredible to see that. even the

amanda berry was walking home from her job at burger king, in her uniform, when abducted by ariel castro. it was a day before her 17th birthday. a year later, gina dejesus, 14 years old, was kidnapped while walking the 40 blocks from her school to her house. castro apparently drove past his own daughter who needed a ride so that he could kidnap gina. he did so by saying that he needed her help in finding his daughter. the one that he'd just driven by. when the story of gina's disappearance made it into the news, castro's estranged son wrote an article about the case for a community paper. ariel castro kidnapped michelle knight, amanda berry and gina dejesus on separate occasions between 2002 and 2004 and held them in captivity for a decade. abusing them physically, sexually, and emotionally. he raped them repeatedly. when amanda berry got pregnant and gave birth to a daughter, now 6 years old, it was michelle who was nurse, maid and doctor. michelle helped amanda to deliver her baby with no anesthesia or any other medical care. the women were tied up with ropes and chains. more than 90 p

always there. >>> today, we're expecting to hear from ariel castro. the man accused of kidnapping three women in cleveland and sub subjecting them to years of physical and sexual abuse. he's pleaded guilty to 957 different counts. during today's sentencing hearing castro is expected to address the court. nbc's kate snow has been following the story for us. she joins me now from cleveland. also with me, kendall coffey, kate, i want to start with you. much of the things we're learning come from things the prosecution put out. it's from diaries that were kept by the three women that were held captive here. diary entries that speak of the forced sexual conduct, being locked in a dark room, anticipating the next session of abuse, being chained to a wall, like a prisoner of war. emotional abuse. threats to kill. being treated like an animal. those were some of the notes in it the d the diaries that were kept. just extraordinary, what we're hearing, some of the ugliest things. >> yeah, it's horrifying details. that comes from -- last night the prosecution rel

plus, a man who spent his life on the wrong side of the law. >>> i want to begin with ariel castro said to make a statement tomorrow. pamela brown spoke to castro's sister today and joins me now. pamela, i poured through the new documentation that's been released this evening, very, very disturbing revolutions. much of it based on diaries from the three poor women held captive by ariel castro. tell me about that. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. you remember all the counts, more than 900 counts ariel castro faced and specific with the dates. we're learning that prosecutors actually used these women's diaries to help them document all the different charges. according to these documents that the prosecutor's office released today, the women over the past ten years got through their time in captivity by keeping diaries and writing about abuse they experienced and their dreams of getting out some day and seeing their families, by writing about being locked in darkrooms. so really disturbing details and we're not expected to see what those diaries say in court tomorrow during castro's senten
