so initially when i showed up and it was like you don't have to wear your body armor, i very quickly learned. it is a counterintuitive thing. the closer you draw yourself to them, the more trust you show in them, the safer you are. and i was prepared and i knew that i needed to show respect for their ways, and so very quickly i became very comfortable in that environment. it was an absolute dream as a reporter to have that level of access to the afghans on a -- and to afghans in that kind of a remote place. i mean, you just can't get to those laces for any length of time because of the security issues. i mean, i had experiences in iraq where i could barely even get to talk to any iraqis because these u.s. units were just dashing down the roads and never even stopping to talk to anyone. so it hindered my ability to report. so in this first village we were in, i was able to spend many, many hours and days with an elderly tribal leader whose life spanned an incredible period of afghan history and was just so rich and sit and talk with him. and it was just, it was a great gift. >> would
