arthur herman. arthur, good morning to you. this chosen counter seems to add to this increasingly aggressive behavior we've seen by the chinese military and of course their aircraft. >> yeah. and good morning, cheryl. yeah, it really does. we've seen this not just in south china sea. we've seen it in the taiwan straits and over taiwan. it really is the case that i've been warning that this was a going to happen ever since i came to hudson institute during the obama administration, that our response to china's militaryization and expansion in the south china sea was inadd inadequate, too little, too late and they feel emboldened. the news media and we call the south china sea a contested area. the chinese don't think so. they think they own the seas around and the skies above. we have to think seriously about shifting and migrating towards unmanned platforms to keep the isr mission going. it's very important, it's vitale important we watch, see what the chinese are up to, the way they're building, expanding their military presence there but using unmanned platforms, what we would call drones and what the military call unmanned aerial vehicles, we'll make it a safer and we can use this to keep the c chinese guessing abot what's happening. if this continues, someone is going to get killed. it's a split second misjudgment for a midair collision and would be better to have that happen with one of our -- with a drone, with a global hawk or a predator as opposed to having it happen with an american or australian pilot on-board. cheryl: there's a lot of layers to this. i want to start with the political side, bring in rob as astori knows. >> if something were to happen, what would happen? tensions would rise immediately. we're sending money for a war with ukraine. china, we're already considering them our number one enemy i would assume and if something happened, what would happen globally, economically, and what would happen militarily with the united states? >> well, that's what we would have to be very much aware of. japanese, i do a lot of work with japan, the japanese have for a long time been aware of these kinds of risks, what they call gray areas, chosen counters with chinese fishing vessels, coast guard vessels as well as aircraft, and you have to plan out the stages by which you're going to respond to this kind of situation. and to force the chinese to realize that they cannot afford to take chances like this anymore because we will -- we will deal with it in ways that they are going to come to regret. and i think the worst possible -- the worst scenario would be if we end up in a ky kinetic ct in the air over the south china sea. cheryl: i'm glad you brought that up. sorry to interrupt you. we want to ask about the economic consequences of this. i've got john lonski here. the first and second largest economies in the world we're talking about potentially military conflict between the two and i wanted to bring john in, go ahead, john. >> i mean, this makes no sense. china is an export powerhouse. it depends greatly on its trade with the rest of the world to develop its own economy. but yet at the same time china appears to be antagonizing the rest of the world with their growing military reach. how do you resolve what appears to be two conflicting strategies on the part of china? >> john, you're spot-on. it's really a deep contradiction in the way in which china is proceeding. on the one hand, pushing very arrogantly its ambitions to become the great global hedgeemon and push the u.s. and topple it as the world's leading super power. on the other hand, china is totally dependent on the global economic system that we built, that the united states and its allies built and maintained since world war ii. so i think one of the things we need to make clear to china is, is that in the event we end up in some sort of armed confrontation, whether it's here in the south china sea or in the taiwan straits, that china is going to be the big loser, not just in the military sense, but also its economy and with that economy too the entire communist party apparatus, their future is very much the in peril and this is a challenge that bringing these kinds of aggressive moves in these contested r -- regions, that it's china that's risking everything and it's the united states and its allies that are going to stand tough and are not going to permit them to push us into a secondary position. cheryl: yeah. there's so many points you're bringing up. my apologies for interrupting off. i want to ask about tiktok, something we talked about so much on this show, maria has. i wanted to get this to you. now you've got government agencies, the executive branch, there's calls for this in the house, many states in the country, they're banning tiktok off of government devices. are you as concerned as maria and others are here about the access that the tiktok and the chinese could get to u.s. data and american data? >> listen, maria's done service talking about this issue. i would like to think the columns i've been writing on the tiktok threat has helped to stimulate congress, make people aware that this is a really maliciousmalicious platform ands long overdue. banning it on government devices is not enough. it's very important that we permit -- that we prevent tiktok and its chinese communist handlers from getting access to data from american users, data they can use then to generate their big artificial intelligence machine learning strategic picture of what's happening in america. but there's also another aspect of this that i've been writing about. that is, that tiktok is a highly manipulative, addictive social media platform for american users who tend to be young people. what we're really allowing is a chinese owned company, one that's responsible to the chinese communist government, that uses a chinese engineered algorithm to basically brainwash the next generation of americans. this should not happen. we need to impose a total ban to get it out as an app. cheryl: okay. definitely. >> and to prevent -- if companies like apple and google were to take it off of the store, that would be a major step forward. cheryl: absolutely. arthurl just about the delay -- apologies about the delay. we appreciate your time. thank you. >> i hope so. happy new year. cheryl: happy new year. we've got a lot more coming up. the future of big tech, what tech companies can expect in the new year. we've got a live report coming up next. ♪ just keep breathing and breathing and breathing and breathing. ♪ i got to keep, keep on breathing. ♪ just keep breathing and breathing and breathing and breathing.rgy ♪ i got to keep -- technologists in india, and customers all on different systems. you need to pull it together. so you call in ibm and red hat to create an open hybrid cloud platform. now data is available anywhere, securely. and your digital transformation is helping find new ways to unlock energy around the world. >>. >>. >> accusations over paypal content based bans adding to long list of big tech challenges as we enter new year fox business grady trimble has more. good morning grady. >> a good morning, cheryl yeah let's start the by
