here's a coastal look at hurricane arthur.it's swirling over kill devil hills in north carolina right now. winds are sustained at 100 miles an hour. we are seeing thunderstorms on the backside of that. what's going to happen with this system, it will continue to push off to the northeast. we don't have to worry about the hurricane coming onshore. it will be way offshore. we're saying rain in allentown, pushing into parts of the poconos. as we head into the rest of today, we'll keep with the flash flood watch. here's how your fourthle july forecast will break down. to the north and west, rainfall as we head into the rest of the morning. temperatures at 84 degrees. we are going to see clearing in time for fireworks as we get closer to your afternoon hours. most of the rainfall throughout the area will come to an end. fireworks, your forecast is safe. i'll go over all the details and the timing coming up in my full forecast. >> hurricane arthur made its initial landfall in north carolina around 11:15 last night. this is what it l

nbc 10 first alert meteorologist sheena parveen is tracking where arthur is. >> arthur is moving very far away from the area. really slamming much of the northeast. for us, the rain has left the area and the cloud cover is continuing to clear out as arthur moves away. clearing from west to east, the shore is still seeing lingering clouds. much improvement from this morning. for the weekend, lipgering affects of arthur. high surf advisories in effect through the afternoon saturday. six to eight foot seas. this is one of the threats along the shore. you want to remember it as we go into tomorrow, because even though the skies will clear and it will be a sunny weekend, even some of the winds will die down, we still have the high risk of rip currents in the ocean. try not to go swimming. that's one thing you are going to not want to do. wind gusts are still near 30 to 35 miles an hour through some areas as arthur moves away. as we go through tonight for fireworks, it will be on the breezy side. the winds will be dieing down a little bit but not too much more than what we're at right now.

we have hurricane arthur right here on the flight explore program. these are live images of where flights are right now. pilots are making beelines outside of the outer rims of hurricane arthur. it's kind of neat just to see how pilots take a different flight path, especially when you have a hurricane off the coast. that will calls trouble for some airports on the east coast, particularly washington, d.c., philadelphia and new york city could see delays and boston, could see delays, as well, as the hurricane moves out to sea. florida looking for thundershowers today particularly in miami. houston and dallas, fort worth could see thundershowers. phoenix, sky harbor international airport could see thundershowers break out there, you could see a delay or two on this 4th of july if you're heading out. tam back to you. >> well, hurricane arthur's first big punch is being felt on north carolina's outer banks. marci gonzalez is there. >> reporter: hurricane arthur made landfall as a category 2 bringing widespread flooding and power outages and tornados. >>

currently there's not a whole lot going on related to arthur. we have a branch of rain in the northern and western suburbs that is producing steady rain in berks county, lancaster county and allentown. a couple of cells popping in along the coast that's it for now. as we take a look we have that flood watch in effect up until noon today just in case anymore cells pop in from that passing hurricane. not a lot of expected. all day there's an advisory for rip currents down the shore. if you get swept out to sea, don't panic, that's the first rule of thumb. all you have to do is swim parallel to the beach north or south, you'll get yourself back in, and swim near lifeguard stations today. all right. 74 degrees, still muggy as you survey the numbers. 76 by noon, a little rain around in the morning. noon, 77. maybe a few lingering showers, 3:00 p.m., 79. we're drying out the humidity is dropping. we get a high of 80 around 4:00 p.m. and back to 77. some of you may have bright sunshine by 6:00 p.m. this evening. fireworks look good, i'll have the forec

then we are watching any effects from arthur. arthur well organized heading to north carolina. it's still moving to the north but it is strengthening. now up to 90 miles an hour maximum winds. it's also accelerating, moving faster. that is a good sign. a good sign of this thing hitting north carolina, the outer banks, and then curving toward the northeast. so the core of that storm is not going to hit us, but we are going to be affected by it. we'll talk more about that coming up. >> i'm also going to talk about how your fourth of july forecast is going to be affected by hurricane arthur. i'll break down each region for you right now. start off with some of our beaches. a closer look at the breakdown as we head into the big weekend, everyone wants to know what the fireworks forecast will be. start with 9:00 a.m. down the shore. our beaches expect temperatures 78 degrees. storms expected. also windy conditions. wind gusts closer to 30 miles per hour. as we head into morning hours. by 1:00 p.m. temperatures in the 80s. still dealing with a chance of storm or windy conditions. by

we are also watching hurricane arthur. it will be impacting the area, part of the area, at least, for your fourth of july. nbc 10 chief meteorologist, glenn "hurricane" schwartz is standing by with a look at that. glenn? >> yeah, sheena. and arthur is looking better organized all the time and it may very well be strengthening and back category 2 hurricane with winds up to 100 miles an hour and more as we go through the night tonight, getting closer to the north carolina coast. you can see this is the radar and the storms right around the center, that's the most powerful part of this -- of the storm and the more they wrap around the center, the stronger this storm can get. now, there's cape fear. looks like it may be turning a little bit more to the northeast. so it grazing the north carolina coast as opposed to slamming right into it, which would cause the storm to weaken. you can see that it is strengthening, 90-mile-an-hour wind, advisory, accelerating a little bit. the closer view shows it is becoming much more symmetri

let's go back to hurricane arthur. meteorologist bill karins who has been tracking this storm overnight. category 2. are we seeing it weaken any? >> we saw those live shots in those pictures. the back side of this storm. some back sides of these storms don't have a lot to them. some can slap you pretty good. that's what you are watching out there now. even though the center is off the coast. this storm has made a little bit of history. the earliest hurricane to hit north carolina, it's the first category 2 that we've seen make landfall in this country since 2008. and, remember, we've gone all the way since wilma in 2005 since we've had a category 3. didn't quite reach that status. but it's been a while since we had a hurricane of this stature move through the u.s. thankfully it did hit an area of the country if it's going to hit somewhere it hit the outer banks who gets hit maybe once every other year. if they'll be anywhere prepared for this, it's the outer banks. the latest imagery just in here. still has that well d

ron, are people there preparing for arthur? >> well, like you said, we don't think the hurricane is going to get that close here. the problem here has been last two nights. heavy, torrential downpours and thunderstorms, which were pretty loud and very powerful. amazing lightning strikes recorded by people over the past couple of nights. as a result, things are really drenched. you look down at the boardwalk here, a new boardwalk because the previous one was destroyed by hurricane sandy. it's completely drenched. there are a few people out now. but later on what we expect here in this part of new york, if you look out in that direction you'll see the surf. and we expect a lot of surfers to come out here. this is surfer's paradise. of course, there's a concern about rip currents and dangerous tides and so forth. but again, this is the kind of weather that surfers like. and we'll see if the beaches get crowded. the forecast, i believe is for rain throughout the day tapering off before nightfall. we expect that most july 4th celebr

here's a look at hurricane arthur. weakening but still holding on to that category 1 hurricane strength right along the boston area, moving up into nova scotia, but clearly it is leaving our area. we have high pressure in control, this is going to give us dry conditions both saturday and sunday and helping to pull in the north wind which has been giving us cooler temperatures. here's a look at the track of arthur. it's going to keep moving up to the north and east over nova scotia but it's continuing to move away from the united states. we will be keeping an eye on it still, but either way the only effects it's going to have on our area this weekend is going to be the high surf advisory. seas anywhere from 6 to 8 feet. along the shore and some of our delaware beaches, this goes until 4:00 p.m. saturday. high risk of rip currents will be in effect for saturday as well, even possibly part of sunday. temperatures sunday, though, will be warmer. we'll see a lot more sunshine. monday, we'll be in about the mid 880 80s. poco

it looks like arthur will become a hurricane and move north and east. the immediate concern is the heat, the heat advisory is posted for all the areas you see in pink, this is where it will feel 100 to 105 by tomorrow afternoon. this is the hot of the it has been all year. you want to take it easy because this is dangerously hot, it's already very hot and it will get hotter, the philadelphia feels like 94 and wilmington 94 and dover 96 and allentown 93, and trenton 92, at the shore though, the wind off the ocean quite a bit cooler, the heat indexes in the mid-70s. we are dry right now and there is a band of thunderstorms working across central pennsylvania, these are moving in later on tonight. future tracker showing 8:30, not everyone will see them but a broken band of thunderstorms and then it all moves out. but tomorrow afternoon it gets more active. by 4:30, more showers and thunderstorms breaking out and these could be very intense, in fact we are looking at the potential for severe weather, at the 95 corridor and areas north and west. that means a

arthur became a category one hurricane at 5:00 this morning. it is bringing heavy rain to the outer banks of the carolinas, could get up to 5 inches of rain there, maximum winds are 95 miles per hour. another 6 miles per hour and this will become a category two hurricane and its will made the shift to the northeast, at 13 miles per hour. it's 225 south-southwest of cape hatteras, really no change with the track but we have change with the strength. it looks like when it hits, when it passes several hundred miles offshore, it will be a category 2 hurricane and that means big problems with rip currents and a lot of beach areas postponed the fireworks not because of rain but because the surf will be so rough. a lot of the fireworks are shot off from barges and they condition get out with the rough surf, it will be better saturday night. we begin to tap into the moisture from arthur, south and east of philadelphia, 9:00 rain along the coast, some of it could be heavy, but as we head into the afternoon, all the moisture is out of here at 5:00 and pe
