nbc bay area's arturo santiago at the courthouse in morgan hill with the latest for us. arturo. >> reporter: marla, this was her first appearance at the courthouse. it was over in just minutes. i can tell you there was a lot of emotion in the room as it happened. 59-year-old deborah gratz stood before a judge for her ram arraignment. gratz and her attorney plan to enter a plea of not guilty. as she sat down parents who used the daycare where gratz worked got up and left the courtroom. gratz had no comment as she left the courthouse. deborah gratz is accused of putting the sleep medication sominex into the sippy cups of children into her care at the kiddie academy on march 8th. cups were taken away before they were used by the children and gratz was immediately fired. nearly a dozen parents who used the academy were at the hearing. two parents we talked to say they had suspicions even before gratz was allegedly caught in the act. >> looking back and saying juice, juice, juice. we never gave her juice. we asked about that. no, just giving her water. thinking back on it, yo

"today in the bay's" arturo santiago is in the newsroom with what's ahead on the fight over gay marriage >>> both sides of this debate are finally getting their day in the court arguing in front of the supreme court of the united states. the court will hear a challenge to prop 8 which defines marriage as between one man and one woman. that challenge will be heard tomorrow. people, as you have said, have been camping outside the supreme court for days trying to get a seat to get in. back in 2004, then mayor of san francisco, gavin newsom ordered them to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. six months later, they invalidated same-sex unions. four years later, the same state supreme court overturned california's ban on same-sex marriage. that ruling was short lived as voters passed proposition 8. tomorrow, supporters and opponents of same-sex marriage

"today in the bay's" arturo santiago. >> good morning to you.ay, officials with the metropolitan transportation commission, the agency that oversees construction on the new span of the bay bridge for caltrans, they will be meeting today to get a full briefing on the problem. let's give you a live picture of the eastern span of the bay bridge, the new part of it. caltrans officials have already stated even with dozens of bolts snapping, the bridge is safe. the giant bolts are 2 1/2 inches in diameter and range in length from 9 feet to 17 feet long. mtc confirmed that 32 of those bolts have snap ped and now caltrans is considering replacing all 288 bolts on the new span. bridge engineers say they're pretty confident that the problem with the bolts is not a design issue or construction problem. it gets down to a problem with the kind of metal with which the bolts are made. it seems there's hydrogen present within the metal which makes the bolts prone to snapping. a precise picture of what exactly is going on. so far, caltrans does not know how long

arturo santiago with more on the little girl's condition and the man who rushed to help her. arturo. >> reporter: laura, the good news is the little girl's injuries were not light threatening. what a scary situation. she was brought to the hospital in oakland with the arrow still stuck in her leg. the 8-year-old girl is from san rafael. she was on a field trip with her 3rd grade class yesterday. around 10:00 in the morning she was sitting on a life sized model of a whale when an arrow that looks like it came from a crossbow hit her in the thigh. police don't know if it was an accident or someone shot her on purpose. this brave little girl was able to stay calm and wait for emergency personnel to arrive. the arrow doesn't seem to be associated with any kind of experiment or demonstration or anything associated with the hall of science and there's no archery range in the immediate area. police canvassed the area and concentrated on a neighborhood north of the science center where there are houses and a parking lot. the incident has put nearby residents on edge. >> this incident

ar arturo santiago is live with whether this will delay the opening. good morning, arturo. >> reporter: good morning. the bridge is safe, they say, and opening day ceremonies will not be delayed for the day after labor day. the metropolitan transportation commission has confirmed that 32 of these giant bolts have snapped and now caltrans can considering replacing all 288 bolts on the new span. the bolts, which are also known as rods, are anywhere from 9 to 17 feet long and 2 1/2 inches in diameter. this is apparently a chemistry probl problem. hydrogen is present in the metal, making the metal brittle. they're pretty confident the problem with the bolts is not a design issue or a construction problem, but the bolts were installed back in 2008. that was before the roadway decking was put in. so access to a lot of these bolts isn't going to be easy. right now it's not known how long it will take to fix the problem or how much it will cost. officials with the metropolitan transportation commission, the agency that's overseeing construction on the new span

"today in the bay's" arturo santiago live in west san jose.morning. >> reporter: we are on the corner of miller and bollinger on the lot where this proposed mcdonald's is slated to be built. hundreds of neighbors do not want it here mainly because it is going to be coming with a drive-through. so far, the city seems to be siding with them on that account. the concerns are numerous. mcdonald's could undermine efforts, they say, to fight childhood obesity, safety issues with kids running across the street to get to the fast food and it might take away from nearby restaurants. the biggest beef, though, seems to be with the drive-through. 750 residents signed a petition voicing their opposition to the mcdonald's and its plans to install a drive-through. they have denied a permit for that drive-through. the developers are appealing that decision to the city council. >> we have a neighborhood here and it is really a pedestrian neighborhood more man anywhere along. the kids are walking back and forth. a drive-through just isn't in the character for a
