again, a nation of over 300 million and it is growing daily. as you saw for example in the 1990's, the amendment of the act gave the american indians there -- their formally overlooked place in the national historic preservation framework. this is a tremendous richness of the american people are beginning to fully embrace. notwithstanding we have had mesa verde in the park system going back to the turn of the last century, but now there is more sensitivity, where awareness of the richness -- more sensitivity of the richness and our obligation to do what we can do to protect and honor those sacred places. along with commemorating the brave marines depicted in the iwo jima memorial in virginia, we will have a memorial at the site the first african americans recruited for the marines were trained for world war ii, breaking down the various for -- barriers for those who followed. we were segregated, yes, and world war ii and certainly through courageous leadership of president truman, his executive 1947, it did make sense and it does make sense. herea
