ashland is open for tours and interprets the life of henry clay. we have a special guest, avery malone, who is with us tonight. she's the director of tour operations here. avery, before you take our viewers on a tour of the first part, let's get a little bit of sense of place. ashland today is in what part of lexington? >> we are within the ring called new circle road. we're about a mile and a half from downtown and about a mile and a half from new circle road. we're on the southeast edge of town in a beautiful residential area of lexington. >> and how many acres does the house have today, and how many did henry clay have at his zenith? >> today we sit on about 17 acres. we have the contract for the first 125 acres that henry clay purcha purchased. at its height, it was about 678 acres. >> we should learn more about his family before we go on tour. he and his wife had how many children, and did they all live here? >> they had 11 children. however, they did not all live here at the same time. there was a lot of tragedy in the family. all six of henr

i grew up in ashland, kentucky, where the ashland oil refinery is the station. you see our school was literally the playground with eye level and the top of the refinery smokestacks. my first memory of caring about the environment was sitting on a green gymnasium floor listening to the parents argue about why exactly their kids were getting sick. why were their cancer clusters. i remember my mom saying this is about the environment, yes, but this is about my kid. i think that what is very interesting about the environment is that when it comes down to it, it is always about our kids, right? the people who gathered in that gymnasium with that big old green floor had nothing to do with democrats. they had nothing to do with republicans. they were parents. the environmental issues that bob talks about in his books are not ones that really have to do with partisanship at all. there is a conversation that we hold in gymnasiums and that her kitchen tables. the majorityof folks are really trying to protect their children. the nrdc action fund is all about rebuilding th

letters where he's directing his fellow inmates to stand against segregation in federal prison both at ashland and then later at lewis berg. and he maps out careful strategies. and not only does he do it for his inmates, he does it for the ward there as well, which is excellent. he tells the warden exactly what he's going to do, and then he gets the inmates to do it. and the letters are striking because they go through such detail. his tactical abilities are really evident, you're right. in 1947 when he's directing the journey of reconciliation. and these were really the first be freedom riders. these were the folks, and all of them were male at that point, who decided to test the morgan v. virginia decision that criminalized, that criminalized segregation laws for interstate travelers. and so they tested the supreme court decision by taking a bus trip through the south. and bayard and george houser were really the main strategists there. and the memos they put together are absolutely breathtaking for their detail and for their concrete, for the concrete ways they directed people at different
